Hey All,  We're staying super busy in the studio these days. Having great fun with all my songwriter clients.  They're bring some awesome songs to the studio these days and we're doing some awesome demos!

Wanted to mention too that we're working on lots of artist projects these days as well.  I put together some mixed clips of a couple projects and would love for you to take a listen.  They are songs one & two in the player.

First one is with country artist Joel Borski.  We recorded 5 songs and will do 5 more to finish out his CD, sometime this summer.  Second one is with Paul McIntosh. Paul is a farmer up in Canada.  His project is all acoustic and was lots of fun to do.  Love his writing about the farm life.

Would love the chance to talk with YOU before you record your next album.

We songwriters are, by nature, dreamers.  To dream is to step outside yourself and into the realm of imagination, where you can become any character you want to; accomplish anything you try to; find anything you search for; and follow path any you dare to.  Dreaming is a wonderful and necessary songwriter’s tool.  But it is only a tool to be used in the creation of product.  It is not a useful tool (in fact, it is a hindrance) in the marketing of said product.

Professional songwriting requires both the dreamer and the realist. They must work in tandem, the way the right and left brain do to create ideas AND then use those ideas to build and do things. Not every creative person is cut out to be a professional songwriter.  That’s okay.  Not every golfer is cut out to be Tiger Woods.  It doesn’t mean we can’t all enjoy the game in our own way.

Those who want the success Tiger Woods has attained must be prepared to put in the work that he has to reach his level of achievement.  If we are not prepared to study, practice and compete, we can still enjoy the game, but cannot expect
results bigger than our investments.

Delusions are fantasies that entertain us, but act as a detriment to our success.  We may dream of becoming a successful songwriter and harbor the delusion that dreaming is enough to accomplish it. It is not.

Be honest with yourself about how much commercial success you actually want as a songwriter.   Be honest with yourself about how much you are actually willing to invest in your own success, in time, energy and money.  (How much are you
willing to bet on yourself?)  There is no answer that fits everyone. There is no “right” answer.

Always dream! But don’t carry delusions about the potential of those dreams  without commitment and hard work.  You can achieve any of them that are pursued with honesty and sincerity.

Face your delusions. Make them realities.  Give flight to your dreams!  May they become your future successes!

We at Kim Copeland Productions would like to congratulate Keith Larson and Chris Yarber.

Their song, "Everything"  is in the finals of the NSAI/CMT Song Contest. Wow! What an accomplishment for Keith & Chris. Top 15 out of over 2000 songs!

You may remember that Keith was the winner of round 3 of our All For The Group promotion and this is the song demoed by Kim Copeland Productions.  It's song two in the player of Kim's MySpace page or you can hear it on her website.

Here's a note from Keith:

Hi Kim,
I'm writing to thank you AGAIN!!  "Everything", the song you demoed for Chris Yarber and myself has been selected as a finalist in this year's NSAI / CMT song contest.  There is no doubt in my mind that the quality of your demo had a very very large part in getting the song this far.  Your demo definitely brought the song up to its fullest potential.   Thanks again, from both me and Chris for a great job, and thanks for your generosity with the "All for the Group" competition.
Best Regards,
Keith Larsen

Here's where we all can help. Let's go vote for Keith's song at the NSAI site.  Here's the blurb from NSAI -

"After 5 months and more than 2,000 song submissions, the wait is finally over.  Beginning TODAY (Feb. 6) at Noon (CST), the 15 Finalists in the NSAI/CMT Song Contest will compete for the annual CMT Listener's Choice Award.  Visit www.nsai.cmt.com to listen to each song and vote for your favorite!  Music fans may vote as often as they like until March 6, 2009.  The song that receives the most audience votes will be crowned the CMT Listener's Choice Award winner!  ALL winners (including the NSAI Grand Prize, CMT Listener's Choice, 4 Finalists, 10 Runners-Up, and 40 Honorable Mentions) will be announced no later than April 1, 2009.
Visit www.nsai.cmt.com for details and prize information."

So go vote for Keith & Chris and their song Everything!
Now and often!

What I Do

Professional production consists of exploring an artist and song before recording begins to find the strongest presentation for it and then working with you to achieve that.   If your goal is to pitch yourself and your songs to the commercial music market, a simple recording with "stock" intros, outros, turnarounds and signature licks will not compete with what other professionals are pitching.

Professional production also includes casting the musicians, studio, engineer and vocalists specifically for your project and goals.  Nashville has a rich pool of world class musicians to choose from in every genre. You should have the opportunity to meet and work with musicians who will elaborate on your creative ideas and work with your producer to bring your unique sound to your project.

A professional producer should have training and experience in vocal production and coaching. The vocal presentation of your song is the single most important element!  As an artist, the only chance you have to get noticed in a crowded market is to capture a unique vocal delivery in the studio.  As a songwriter, you are pitching your songs to artists (i.e. singers).  If the vocal performance on your recording doesn't make them want to sing it, you have wasted your money recording it, no matter how good the musical tracks are.

In the mixing process, a producer brings a second set of ears and is able to focus on different aspects than the engineer  would.  This assures that you get a final mix of your song or performance that is not only technically good, but also better sonically.  You can hear the difference that the expertise of a producer brings to a project. So can your audience.

In short, what a producer brings to your project is one person, who is skilled in all aspects of recording (from budgeting to casting to mastering)  who remains focused on the "big picture" and end goals for your recordings to assure that the arrangement, instrumentation and vocal delivery will reach the market you are aiming for.  To achieve this, it is important that each person on your session have one job to do and do well and one person (the producer) directing the creative energy of the project so that the integrity of the song/artist does not suffer.

To compete with professional artists and songwriters, you must think like they do.  They understand the role and the benefits of professional production. Now you do too.

Knowledge is power! Use it wisely.
