Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes
I found myself in Times Square last night. I walked there from Chelsea with an old friend after an art opening and a studio visit. It was a comforting night to walk in New York, no pressure, no need to be anywhere or get anything done. I tried to absorb as much artificial light as I could. I tried to absorb the spectacle. The air was cold but not freezing, I didn't need gloves. Perfect.
We stopped in front of the Quiksilver store and as we watched the giant video monitors, I told her about my failed bmx career, on how I quit bmx for art, and on how I was almost a rep for Quiksilver and how all the video imagery of skateboarding and surfing was what I have been trying to bring to the art world. There is very little artwork that has that "UNGH!" feeling…like when you leave the earth and defy gravity for a moment and gain weightlessness. I will miss that when I am old. Shit, I miss it now. When I am old I think I will finally appreciate Rothko Paintings. It's no wonder that most art collectors aren't ready to have that "'UNGH!" in their house. It takes over, like a giant gorilla in the room.
We went to the Hershey store and bought chocolate and some crazy peanut butter/chocolate syrupy stuff and ate it right in the store. As we were talking and eating and looking at all the tourists, I commented on how the store looked like a show at Deitch Projects, which made her laugh. It was totally true.
I lived near there almost ten years before and at that time I did my best to avoid that pedestrian nightmare, but not last night. Last night it was like walking on some deserted beach. It was great to be reminded of why I love New York.
