Q&A Sessions: Eric Boboby Amaris Castillo 07.14.2009 Eric Bobo is a man of many styles. The percussionist has worked with a large variety of artists, such as Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, and Ella Fitzgerald. Yet, few know that it all began when he was a youngin’. Born in Queens, NY and raised in Los Angeles, Bobo grew up under the influence of Latin jazz while making a name for himself in hip-hop. Although these two music genres may seem like an odd pair, this open-mindedness is what has distinguished Bobo from other aspiring musicians. The 40-year-old Puerto-Rican artist grew up working with Latin jazz icons, including Tito Puente and his late father, Latin jazz legend Willie Bobo. As he grew older, he transitioned to hip-hop, while never letting go of his Latin jazz foundation. Bobo later auditioned for the Beastie Boys and ended up working with them on their national Check Your Head tour during the early 90’s. He soon recorded with them on their Ill Communication and Hello Nasty albums. Later in 1993, Bobo began working for Latin hip-hop group Cypress Hill as their percussionist, later becoming an official member in 1994. He has toured with them ever since.
Now, more than 10 years later, Bobo has branched off and released his first solo album this past November, titled Meeting of the Minds. Currently, Bobo is in New York City working with different artists and has already headlined the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) at Central Park Summerstage. In between his many appearances, Bobo talks to nocheLatina about working with the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill, going solo, as well as what he’d be doing if it weren’t for music. nocheLatina: You released Meeting of the Minds this past November. What does the album title come from?
Eric Bobo: The title stems from me working with different people on the album- different artists, different genres, putting it all together, and seeing what comes out. Meeting of the Minds is a way to try to come up with something together-to be able to blend in different genres. You just really map it out the best way and put it all together. You come to a meeting of the minds, you know?
nocheLatina: You worked closely with the Beastie Boys and you’re a member of Cypress Hill. What was it like working with these two groups?
Eric Bobo: Wow, well working with the Beastie Boys was a really great opportunity. It was a lot of fun. I was able to learn a lot and I’m very proud of the music that we created together. With Cypress Hill, it’s the same way. I’ve been with them since ’93 and then became an official member in ’94. You’re talking about two iconic hip-hop groups. You can’t mention hip-hop without mentioning Cypress Hill and Beastie Boys. It’s been a great honor and privilege.
nocheLatina: Why did you choose to work on a solo project? Eric Bobo: I think there always come a time, especially when you’re part of a group for a long time, that you’d like to express yourself in a different way and do things on your own, as opposed to having to share ideas with two or three different guys and compromise. It was really about picking the time and the type of project-that was the key. It was about time to do something on my own, bring it back to the fold, and have fresh ideas.
nocheLatina: Do you think working with the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill has prepared you for your solo career?
Eric Bobo: I think that a little bit of influence came from them, along with my earlier work, working with my father, and working with different genres. I played with Tito Puente and other artists. A little bit of all that helped prepare me for doing a solo album.
nocheLatina: How would you describe your album as far as its sound?
Eric Bobo: It really touches on different styles. It definitely has a hip-hop base, but it also has its Latin flavor. click HERE to read the entire article!

What’s good everyone!! I know it’s been a minute since I’ve blogged. I’ve been twittering a bit but there are sometimes where you need more than 140 characters to express yourself or just post some stuff, which brings me to this blog. Back in the mid 90’s, B Real & myself would document our tours and call them Soldier Stories. We would post these on the CH website for the fans so I guess you could say that we were “blogging” way before it became the “IT” thing. In any case, we would talk about that particular show day and what went down but from 2 different persepectives. We did this for a long time but as things got busier for us, we eventually went on a writing hiatus. I imagine that we will start up again once CH gets back on the road. Anyway, as I was going thru my hard drive, I found a folder of stories that I had written while on tour with Fort Minor. I thought it would be cool to post and kinda relive it. I’m sure the FM fans would get a kick out of it. I think I’ll post these stories every now and then so think of these as “literary blog treats”. So, here’s the first of many to come.
Enjoy!!!! EB
Soldier Stories 2006: Fort Minor U.S. Tour-Day 2- House Of Blues-Chicago, Illinois/1-29-06
We drove overnight to Chicago and when we all woke up, we were parked under the House Of Blues. It was really cold out there, at least for me it was. We were staying at the House Of Blues Hotel, which is where the majority of the artists that play at this HOB usually stays. I really like playing here because the sound is good and the crowd gets hype. I don’t expect it to be any different this time around. I just went straight to my room to chill out and shower. Now every Sunday at the HOB, there is what they call the “Sunday Gospel Brunch.” They have an all-you-can-eat buffet of some good Cajun food, breakfast stuff, and desserts. Since we were performing, we didn’t have to pay the $50 a person. After eating and watching the Gospel choir, I went back to the room and napped. Later on, Apathy called me up to see if I wanted to get some lunch. I was down so he and Joe, who is one of the string players, came to my room. We walked to this cool little Italian spot a few blocks away from the hotel. Vin Scully, who is the 4th member of SOB met us over there. Ap wanted to it the Foot Locker, so we all walked to Michigan Ave., which is the main strip where all the shops are. There were snow flurries, it was windy and cold. We stopped at Nike Town but Ap still needed to go to Foot Locker. It was getting too cold for me, so both me and Scully left back to the hotel. We had our sound check then we just waited until the show. Little Brother showed up so we would have a full show. The advantage of playing at this particular HOB is the fact that the hotel is right next door, so even if you are running late, you don’t have far to go. I didn’t get a chance to watch any of the Demigodz set or Little Brother’s set. I heard that the crowd was hyped up for both. I was more hyped up for the show as well. When FM hit the stage, the crowd was loud and going crazy. I was wondering if Common was going to come to the show since he’s from Chicago, but I think he’s on tour right now. Lupe Fiasco came through though. This was the first time that I met him. He seemed cool, but a bit quiet. We ran through the set and everyone seemed on point. Holly got a good response too for “Where’d You Go”. The sound was so good in the HOB, which always calls for a good show. A song that I really like in the show is “In Stereo”. This song bumps hard!! Another song that the crowd has been reacting to is the remix to “In The End” by LP. “Believe Me” is surprisingly on of the strongest songs in the set, not just cause I’m on it, but because everyone knows the lyrics and they sing it very loud. FM came back for an encore and a few more songs. The place went crazy. I personally thought that this show was way better than Minneapolis. The crowd was better as well as the sound and vibe. After the show, we had another meet and greet. I’ve noticed that there are 2 meet and greets. One with the FMM people that are chosen and the other with contest winners and people who buy the cd or a shirt. It was a cool time. We then went into the Foundation Room and got our drink on. We then moved the party to this bar down the street from the HOB. Everyone was getting his or her fade on!!! From what I heard, some people from the crew got a little crazy but I wasn’t there so I won’t divulge anything. Tak, Celph and I left back to go to the hotel and came back to my room. We were listening to music on PlowRadio and chillin. Eventually, Cheap came by then after a little while, we all called it a night. A good night it was I might add, and I was glad that we would have a day off. The next day, I didn’t do too much of anything but just chill in the hotel. Celph called he, Ap, Cheap and Scully and me were all chillin’ in Ryu’s room so he told me to come down and hang out. Later that night, we were all going to go see Holly perform at this place called “The Tonic Room”. When we got there, the place was pretty small, but nice and intimate. I met someone from the FM message boards. His name was Robert but he goes by. He seemed pretty cool. He was tripping on the fact that there he was in this little place chilling with FM. There was also another fan that went to the show and came to see Holly. They both got a chance to meet everyone and take some pictures. After getting a little toasty at the Tonic Room, we all went back to the same bar that we went to the night before. It’s cool that we were all hanging out together. That’s the way that tours should be. Since we had a 1:00am call time, we all partied until we had to leave. It was a blast!! Needless to say, on our next stop, we wouldn’t be having a hotel because we are going straight to the gig. How fun!!
