Hands down, fall is my favorite time of year. Reckon that's one reason it's been so long since my last blog post. I have been dividing my time between the music and my outdoor activites, which included a trip to North Dakota back in October, and as much time as possible in the woods of Upstate SC over the past few weeks. It's a good time to be outdoors. But, good things continue to happen on the music front as well. Just posted upcoming dates, better late than never I hope! In the coming months I'll be doing more dates with the Barbed Wires, a new band line up including 2 new compadres who are long-time veterans on the Charlotte scene, Joe Turick (guitar) and Joe Williams (bass). Rockin' Ray Mitchell will be holding down the drum seat on most dates. I'll also be back at Snug Harbor in December with my "CD release" line up, the Fallen Gentlemen...including producer Mark Lynch on bass, David Kim (DK) on drums, and Chris Peace on guitar. I am also really happy to be making music with some other great folks...including the Loose Lugnuts, and Bob Graham and the Leadville Social Club, and another interesting new band: Overmountain Men (Rob Childers, Randy Saxon, Scott Dailey, Geoff White, David Childers). Most of these ensembles will be found sooner or later at the Thirsty Beaver in Charlotte, so if you have not discovered this fine urban honky tonk yet, check it out when you are out and about. The jukebox, cold beverages, friendly bartender, bartendresses, and patrons will will keep you glued to your barstool, and you may find it difficult to leave. In any case, thanks for checking in, and hope to see you out there somplace soon.

The great jazz pianist/composer Dave Frishberg has a song called "I Want To Be A Sideman", which really says it all. I mean, it's great being a band leader and everything, but there is a certain freedom and relaxation that comes from just being a side guy. In the coming weeks I will have that opportunity on several occassions. I have always wanted to be able to mix it up and match it up with wide circle of musical compadres, and over the past year or two that's kind of what's happened. So in addition to the dates I am doing around the release of my new CD, I'll be adding quite a few "side gigs" to the calendar as well in the weeks and months ahead. So many tunes, so little time...
Please see the show calendar for more details.
Thanks, and please drop us a line. BN

Well folks, it's taken a while to get it all together, but my new CD, THE MAN THAT I CAN'T BE is slated for release on July 21. That is actually the web and retail distribution date, I will have the CD available at shows starting with our June 20 date at the Purple Onion in Saluda NC.
I am really happy with the album, and hope that you will agree it's been worth the wait.
I had the opportunity to work with some really great folks this time around: Mark Lynch (Lou Ford, David Childers) produced the CD, and we recorded with engineer Chris Garges at Old House Studio between Gastonia and my hometown, Clover SC. Mark and Chris helped me connect with some great local players whom I had not worked with before, and it was a privilege to work with them on this project: two great horn players Jon Thornton (trumpet) and John Alexander (saxes), David Kim (drums), Jason Atkins (keyboards), Bob Barone (steel guitar), and it was really a thrill to work with one of the top vocalists in our region, Beth Chorneau, on vocals. You will also notice the voice of my esteemed friend David Childers on a couple of cuts, and that's Randy Saxon that you will hear on banjo.
Also, my old Rank compadres Ray Mitchell (drums, vocals) and Tom Khun (bass), were on board as well, and I love it that we are all still working together over what is adding up to be many years now.
The CD release will also mark the debut of my new live band, the Fallen Gentlemen, which features producer Mark Lynch on bass, David Kim on drums, and Chris Peace on guitar and vocals. We are playing a few gigs around the region in June before the CD release show at Snug Harbor in Charlotte on July 11. David Childers and his new band, the Overmountain Men, open the show, and we'll also have Beth Chorneau and the horn section from the CD on board that night as well.
So, I am happy to finally have this one out the door, and am looking forward to the upcoming shows...hope to see you out there...meanwhile, drop us line anytime. Thanks - BN

Warm winds in February fool the flowers into bloomin'. Springtime's comin' but it ain't here yet. There is regrowth and renewal in the dead of winter, but who wouldn't hope for an early turn of season?
Thanks for checking in...I am encouraging that turn of season with a few solo dates in Charlotte and in my backyard down in York County SC. Check out historic downtown York if you are looking to make a break from Charlotte's gravity field and get back to a bit of real small-town Carolina...more and more good music happening at Sylvia Theater, and in a couple of nice bar/restaurants downtown...York is beginning to take on a life of it's own...
Ah but there is something to be said for the old neighborhoods up in Catawba City proper...I am told that Tavern on Park is a fine place to find repast and good company, we'll find out on two Thursdays in March...come on out and let's see...
I will also be keeping one foot in the honky tonks in the company of the Loose Lugnuts...if you are looking for a rowdy good time come see these boys...they'd be pretty good if they got serious about things, but apparently no danger of that happening just yet...
Also, look for more news soon on plans for release of my new CD "The Man That I Can't Be" produced by Mark Lynch, and future band dates in support of that release.
Drop us a line, stay in touch....BN

Last summer I was invited to play the Sylvia Theatre's Songwriter's Night, in York SC. This was my first opportunity to play at the Theatre, and I was knocked out with what a fine venue it is, and with the great potential it has as a showcase venue for regional music. Paul Finnican, who owns the theatre and is himself a songwriter and performer, operates the theatre as a labor of love, and his doors are wide open to local and regional talent. While a variety of music is promoted at the theatre on an ongoing basis, greater audience support is badly needed to make music at the Theater successful and economically viable. Since I now make my home in Clover SC, in York County, I have gotten on board to see what we can do to increase the visibility of music at the Theater, and to encourage more folks to get down our way to enjoy the music and other interesting local color that York County has to offer.
So, I want to let you know about two musical events at Sylvia Theatre that I'll be involved in come late Summer and Fall…more detail to follow in coming weeks:
Sylvia Theatre Songwriter's Night
I will be co-hosting the Songwriter's Night along with Paul Finnican on the following dates, shows are at 9:00 pm:
Saturday, August 16

Yuengling Catawba City Music Series
Showcasing top regional Americana music, shows are at 9:00 pm. Sponsored by Yuengling Brewery (yup, that Yuengling!)

Bill Noonan Band and the Black Bottom Biscuits
Friday October 17

High summer, I reckon you'd call it. Sure could use some rain down our way. Pasture is dry and the pond is droppin'. But down at the Biddy Hut they got an on-premise license and you can stop in on the way back home, have you a cold beer, and catch up on what's goin' on. News of the world ain't all that great neither, but what you gonna do? Keep on workin'. Speaking of which, check out the new show dates. Big doin's at the Sylvia Theatre in York...mighty fine music venue in a genuine Carolina small town setting. More news to follow...BN

"Let's resurrect this town with music, make it like the old dancehalls in Texas during the Bob Wills days, let's get people out of their bubbles and make 'em get up and dance…" Matt "Shorty" Miller, Charlotte NC, June 2008
It all started when Bernie Brown, owner of the Visulite Theatre, offered Matt "Shorty" Miller an open date in July, with the idea of giving some local and regional acts greater visibility in the Visulite's first-class setting for live music.
The idea was that Shorty, one of the hippest and hottest bluegrass pickers in town, would be a good guy to put together a showcase lineup for local roots music, something that Bernie would like to do on a regular basis, if the audience support can developed.
Shorty himself was unavailable to play the initial date due to family obligations, but he enlisted musical pal Bill Noonan as a co-conspirator, and a line up for the July date was quickly established. And if Shorty couldn't be there in person to join in, he could at least lend his name to the proceedings, and thus, Shorty's Urban Honky Tonk Revue was confirmed and consecrated.
The July 11 event puts the spotlight on high-caliber homegrown talent, showcasing three of the Charlotte area's top Americana acts: the authentic and highly-danceable Cajun sound of Carolina Gator Gumbo, veteran Carolina roots rocker and tunesmith Bill Noonan, and hot new up-and-coming country rockers South85. Show time and ticket prices are both reasonable, to demonstrate that you don't have to travel far from home to find top-notch twang at a listener-friendly and affordable ticket price.

As per the plan we have been off the road more than on it in recent months, which is not to say we have just been staying home. Had a mighty fine little road trip up to Ohio back at the end of April, with more shows scattered here and there in the coming weeks and months. We are looking forward very much to the Blue Ridge BBQ and Music Festival in Tryon NC coming up in June. We'll be on the main stage on Saturday 6/14 from 12:45 - 2:00...this is an all-round great food and music festival...always a fine line up of talent...this year including our freinds Tater, also on the main stage later on Saturday. Speaking of Tater, had a real fine time last weekend hearing those boys open for Hayseed Dixie in Charlotte...that was a good 'un...and managed not to hurt ourselves too bad, even though we closed down the Thirsty Beaver afteward. But that's borderin' on too much information. Still working on that new CD, honest we are, now looking at late summer release, and I can promise a few musical surprises which I hope will make it worth the wait. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for us, and drop a line any old time. BN
