Benny & Space Burglar present:
Midday Mass
Sunday from 12-2pm on FleetFM Broadcast via fleetfm.co.nz and on the radio at 88.3 AK and 107.3 WTN
Well, today is my last show on Fleet for the foreseeable future - got some other stuff that I need to spend time honouring, some projects brewing. It's been great having the opportunity to select the musical input for Fleet listeners on an early Sunday afternoon. I will be popping in and out of the airwaves from time to time, special-guesting with Benny, and maybe with Joe Fish and Scarey D on the Dead Air show on Wednesday nights from 9 - 11.
Today I did the second half of the show. The playlist:
Sparklehorse - Hammering the Cramps Voom - Beth Able Tasmans - Mary Tyler Moore The Left Bank - Pretty Ballerina Air - Space Maker Public Enemy - Brother's Gonna Work It Out Radiohead - Where I End and You Begin The Doors - Shaman's Blues Pop Art Toasters - I Won't Hurt You Cream - World of Pain DD Smash - Devil You Know Alfie - People Mazarin - The New American Apathy Julee Cruise - I Float Alone Lilys - Where the night goes Beach Boys - Wind Chimes

This week I should point out that the latest Blonde Redhead album, 23, is totally captivating me. Some have seen fit to criticise it, god knows why - I think it's possible that this has something to do with a further 'polishing' of their sound. The album isn't quite so 'New York'/Sonic Youth sounding but then their LPs were becoming less so anyway over their last few outputs. The thing that stands out the most with 23 is a kind of leaning - in some songs - towards what I can only describe as a ''pop" aesthetic approach towards the vocal melodies - almost like Cocteau Twins meet the Supremes. However the general sense remains a nice My Bloody Valentine feel, particularly in Blonde Redhead's continuing love affair with descending emotive chord structures and walls of sound, and their cool lil broken beats remain. Check out the track Spring and By Summer Fall - it's the one that opened it all up for me. Epic!
Also, the Deerhunter LP Cryptograms is surprising me with its restraint, avoiding going all for the in-vogue 'dancepunk' sound and feeling more inclined to explore a darker, more brooding landscape of sound and motorhythms. Very much reminds me of an update on the Spiritualized approach, crossed with (of course) Joy Division or the Bunnymen's early stark minimalism, with the odd krautrock-ish groove or Velvet's kind of whimsy.
Also on high rotate in my car over the last couple of weeks: Solar Powered People (Sonic Youth meets Broken Social Scene), and The Sea and Cake's new album, Everybody - beautiful and fantastic as they always are.
The playlist:My Morning Jacket - It Beats 4 U Morrissey - Interesting Drug Mazzy Star - Fade Into You Cowboy Junkies - Seventeen Seconds The Presets - Down Down Down Tom Vek - If You Want Velvet Underground - Lady Godiva's Operation Faith No More - Evidence The Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands Deerhunter - Cryptograms Baiterspace - New Man The Crystals - He's a Rebel Grinderman - No Pussy Blues LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great Wire -12XU Snowden - Like Bullets Beck - Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs (Yellow Sweat) Blonde Redhead - The Dress Dungen - Gör Det Nu Thought Creature - Your Telepathy Tiger Tones - Be Your Star Colder - Crazy Love Whirlwind Heat - Purple Buzzcocks - Something's Gone Wrong Again Pig Out - Disco Bag Pavement - Father to a Sister of Thought The Walkmen - Thinking Of A Dream I Had
