ROUGH TRADE SHOPS ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2007

ALELA DIANE - THE PIRATES GOSPEL

If you imagine a continuum from the Carter family to Gillian Welch and ending up near Joanna Newsom, then this album falls between all these: rural rather than country, but not rednecked; ancient and modern.. Still playing it now after having it for a year, and you can't say more than that.

ROUGH TRADE SHOPS ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2007

PATRICK WATSON -CLOSE TO PARADISE - This record spans experimental noise, cabaret guitar / piano pop, stripped down gospel, new orleans jazz, walls of noise and Beatles-like melodies.with a voice that sounds like the lovechild of Jeff Buckley and Nina Simone and instrumentation like a Balkans funeral waltz through Gotham City - as played by a 36 piece chamber orchestra it heralds the arrival of a major new talent.

PANDA BEAR - PERSONPITCH - A firm favourite in both Rough Trade Shops, that crosses all musical boundaries, when asked what this record sounds like Chris replied simple. take The Beatles 'White Album' and The Beach boys 'Pet Sounds' and it would sound like this...with owls.

WEST COAST - STUDIO - Two Scandinavians took elements of disco, krautrock , madchester, Lindstrom and The Cure and threw them back wrapped in a huge cosmic psychedelic masterpiece of a record. No.we didn't think it would work either.but it does. in spades.

MIRACLE FORTRESS - FIVE ROSES - The debutalbum from Miracle Fortress is an album that you will fall in love with instantly. If Arcade Fire's Win Butler didn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders, loved The Beach Boys, sang beautiful harmonies and let Brian Eno produce, he might be capable of something as graceful and uplifting as Miracle Fortress's debut.

BURIAL - UNTRUE - Burialreturns with 'Untrue', a new record of weird soul music, which lovingly processes spectral female voices into vaporised r&b. It continues with the debut's crackle-drenched yearning and bustling syncopations, haunted by the ghosts of rave, but also reveals a new upbeat energy. Huge crossover potential here ala Portishead or Massive Attack. A record to truely immerse yourself in.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM -SOUND OF SILVER - After the dancefloor destruction of the first LCD set, James Murphy returns with Kraftwerk, Joy Division and Carl Craig all exploding out of these NYC built grooves, features some of his finest songwriting and production yet.

WOODEN SHJIPS -WOODEN SHJIPS - Weed may have had something to do with the making of this record. juggernaut riffs, magic, smoke, psychedelia, repetition, volume and warmth, with a sound that evokes suicide, Loop, Spacemen 3, Guru Guru, The Velvet Underground and The Doors. Astonishing.

BATTLES - MIRRORED -This band features ex members of Don Cab and Helmet and offer post rock electronics from the future for you to enjoy now. These guys are musical mathematicians. You have never heard anything so complicated be so soulful and so much fun.

M.I.A - KALA - Who eversaid 'difficult second album' didn't bank on Mia's skills. Sliced up cuts of world funk all pressed into perfect pop music. From club bangers to Bollywood disco jams it's all here. Perfect.

18-1 (Yes Eighteen)

This is one match you won't be reading about in the NME. Fact!! It was supposed to be an 8 a side game but one player of the NME team was stuck in a field just outside Essex, having it large listenning to all 23 remixes of the Klaxons 'Interzone to Atlantis'. So instead we generously allowed a 7-a side game to go ahead. It is just as well we didn't have a man advantage because within 5 minutes Rough trade Utd had taken a 3 goal lead with the relentless goal hungry 7 pm to bed the night before Jamie Woolgar sloting in a couple and Jason Neubarton rounding off a nice move. It was obvious at this stage that the NME had spent too much time trying to generate new music scenes and not enough time learning to run and kick a ball. The match was so one sided that the portly goalkeeper had time to lay out a picnic and finnish it off.
Despite it being one sided Rough trade Utd showed some true professionalism by carrying on attack after attack. It was Men versus Men except they turned out to be boys. Goals were going in from all angles and we almost lost count but luckily Jason's 7 year old son was on hand to have some extra maths homework.
The midfield is where the war is usually won and John Webb, Billy, Theo and Jason were all generals and they proved sometimes it's good to have only leaders.
New member of the team Darryl played an essential holding roll at the back and if he didn't clean up the mess then Paul or James were on hand. Everyone was doing their job and doing their job well.
Half time was called and Luke told us it was 12-0. Almost everyone had scored but Jamie was on his way of bagging a double hat trick, Billy had four and Jason had a hat-trick. One touch football had been the order of the day and the day was in order.
The second half was a dull affair apart from the swap of Paul Southgate who took the keepers gloves whilst the buster bloodvesel look-a-like Sean Forbes waddled about up front. He didn't score but sadly the NME sneaked one at the last. It was a gutter. The only other sad news of the day was midfield maestro Theo had 8 shots on target but no goals. There's lots of others banging on the gaffa's door for a game - be warned.
Truth be told - it wasn't a game but the most one sided affair since I thought I was going out with Debbie Harry from the age of 12 until 39.
There are lots more games in the offering - bring it on 679, Selectadisc and of course the old enemy White Heat. We will have a rematch with the NME one day but maybe after they've learnt other skills other than trying to make rubbish bands so really exciting.

The White Heat Line up
Who know they were all pale and skinny

Finally after months of planning and preparation the Grudge Game of the Youth versus the OAP's was on. Olly had promised a pitch and nets. In reality it was a bit of grass on Regents Park and some traffic cones they probably still had on their heads from the night before. The heat was relentless - the pitch shocking but there was a war to be won. The attendance was thin on the ground - Will's missus, Ren, Jason's bike and about 25 thin model Girlfriends on the white Heat side - all who are all probably in some 'New Rave' band playing in Old Street soon.
The game kicked off at a frantic pace. White Heat were knocking the ball around nicely but making no ground but as soon as Rough trade got the ball - it was short, sharp and direct and the shots started to rain in on the White Heat net. Their Keeper made a few terrific saves before Jamie Woolgar from the Rough Trade label cut in from one of the channels and the ball ended up in the back of the scorebag -
1-0 to Rough Trade. We were controlling the game and chance after chance was squandered by the busy midfield which was being run by some generals like Paul Southgate, Victor from Securicor and Theo from the Rough trade Label who proved he was more than a good looking boy. White Heat had height on their side in the form of the singer from The Horrors and some tall Cat upfront but the Rough trade defence were handling their long ball tactics. Then out of nowhere White Heat replied with a sloppy opener - there was little communication between the Fat Keeper and Centre backs and before we knew - the game was even. one a piece. Considering Rough Trade was made up of drug addicts, the overwight and pensioners - we were playing decent football.
After half an hour play we took the lead again from the mark Viduka esque Will Burns. He spun on a sixpence and powered it home with his left peg. Again more chances fell to Rough trade but we couldn't capitalise and White Heat played some neat football and scored a well worked goal to take it to 2-2 at half time.
The spirit was still high in the camp despite going in all level. We decided to get back to basics and get the business done in the second half. It started a bit scrappy with White Heat get all niggly and throwing the dummy out the pram. It's a man's game and we had 17 troops prepared to die. Victor was upping his game, the back three solid and in Simon Russell we had a madman on the loose. Rough Trade over the space of the next 20 minutes had three goals disallowed including one clear Own Goal from a massive punt from the fatboy in goal and one a flying shot from Simon from a pinpoint pass from Jimmy Beale on the wing.
Things we getting tense and the play was getting stretched. Jason Neubarton up front was running the kids at their own game - pace and youthfullness. He was terrorizing them and finally it paid off as the tanned demon striker got a 1-1 and glided past his man and took the score to 3-2. White Heat as what was becoming the norm struck back instantly with a soft goal which the keeper admits he should have done better - maybe he had his thoughts on cream cakes. 3-3 and it was anyone's game.
Tackles were now flying in and John Webb was in the centre of midfield battling and playing cutting edge balls. the other John - the Whippet was putting in a lot of donkey work on the left hand side with little success. But with just 10 minutes to go it seemed like Rough trade had got the winner. It came from a John Webb assist with the bigman Will upfront showing immense strength and slamming the goal past the keeper (who was getting used to it) for a 4-3 scoreline to Rough Trade. Will stood there and took the applause from the crowd, as though he had scored the winning goal at the world cup. Rough Trade smelt the blood and decided to go for the kill but it was a big error as the game was stretched - the midfield from both teams were sunning themselves on a beach in Ibiza. So, for the fourth time White Heat equalized with a sloppy fourth - Will claims Steve was at fault but it's a team game and we all have to take responsibility. So it looked like the game would end in a stalemate but with just a few minutes left Rough Trade snatched a winner. Jamie Woolgar ducked and dived, like Del boy past a few skinny kids and delievered a perfect ball across where the Ray Wilkins like (at least in hair style) John Webb stood and thundered the ball in the net for the victory. It was the perfect reward for all our hard work. With just seconds remaining there was still time for one last scarce with a header that flew over the bar - White Heat claimed it was in but after denying us on three seperate occassions - they didn't have a leg to stand on. The final whistle blew - the job was done. VICTORY.
We ended with sore heads but Happy hearts. The old men of Rough Trade went off to celebrate in the pub with a few light ales and the youngsters started a new game against each other - i guess it meant they would at least win one game.
