Hi -

I find myself happily overwhelmed with ideas as we head towards the Kwanzukahmas (yea, I made it up) mess. If you're experiencing any overwhelm, I hope at least it's that good kind, not the silly, useless, worry kind that I get stuck in sometimes.

I'm packing up the new box sets (http://jonahmatranga.com/yardsale/162332). It's hilariously time-consuming and satisfying. Listening to the all the weird demos has been an adventure unto itself. I've made a neat stencil for the CDs to make each set unique, found fun photos from over the years, and I'm working on a long line of liner notes and dates. For those that pre-ordered, they'll be shipped by the end of this week or early next. There are still a handful left, and when they're gone, they're gone.

I'm waiting on the rest of the supplies to start making everything from Ts to totes to mugs to bibs to mouse pads right here at home (my room looks hilarious). While I'm waiting, I'm thinking of design ideas. More than that, I'm mostly leaning towards a more interactive process, where you tell me what image, album cover, lyric, phrase, dedication, etc. you'd like on there, and I make it to order. Between that and the made-to-order jTunes CDs, I'm basically taking the Unique Recordings concept (http://jonahmatranga.com/unique) and letting it radiate out to all the other stuff. Less mass production, more interaction. Happy livin' small, indeed.

Speaking of Unique Recordings, my voice went out last week, which sucked and put a damper on recording. Grrr. The voice is coming back, though, and just in time: I've got a couple personal shows (http://jonahmatranga.com/shows/personal) this weekend; a birthday and a wedding, so sweet.

For those in the Bay Area, I'm also singing at a benefit to raise money for school music programs (http://www.mustcreate.org). I'm part of a fun cover band. We'll be taking on Prince, Zeppelin, U2, Heart, Benatar and Blondie. Superfun, for good stuff too. The show is this Wednesday night (tomorrow!!) at the beautiful Great American Music Hall. Tix can be purchased on a Sliding Scale at (http://svrocks09.eventbrite.com) or at the door. Please spread the word to those you know in the area.

Okay, back to the Box Set creation. Thanks for another amazing year of making things.

Hi -

This one kept getting pushed back cos I kept having more ideas that I wanted to try and articulate. I got to some of them (and made a little list below). As with most ideas I've had, these ideas came from simply thinking about what it is that I like most about doing this for a living. That, in turn, generally correlates with what has felt the most interesting for us. Of course, I choose to make stuff just because I choose to make stuff, and the mystery of where ideas come from is as big a mystery as any, but talking with you about it in various ways over the years has become so intertwined with the process of making stuff and showing it to you, in certain ways it feels like part of the art itself. Fun circles.

Anyway, here's a Top Ten-ish (in no particular order) of my favorite ways to do this, and what ideas are coming from that:

Ongoing Conversation: It's remarkable to me how long we've doing this together; me making stuff, you buying it (or not), giving me your ideas, telling me what's going on in your lives, me telling you through the songs or these letters, or in person at shows. It's a great conversation. I'm having ideas about this conversation we keep having. It's based on some very old ideas that I'd like to renew and make relevant for today. I see bits of it bubbling up around the internet. Here's an attempt to articulate it and bring some elements together in our world.

Direct Interaction: It's been great to finally be able to sell the stuff I make in a fair, secure, way. Whether it's a record company, a gallery, a store or download sites, there have always been companies that make their money by getting in between the artist and the people that like the art. I understand the potential benefits of these in-between entities, but ultimately, I've always thought the more direct our interaction can be, the better. I've done it so many different ways. I'll keep trying different things and staying open. I just wish more artists would build their own worlds instead of using useless middle-people, seems so much better / cheaper / more interesting and personal for everyone. As we're solidly in the age of the download, I'm making more and more things available that way; concerts, home recordings, cover songs.

Direct Physical Interaction: Similarly, while I understand the benefit of making a recording, making a bunch of duplicates of it, and selling it via stores and such, there are finally good, simple ways for me to make you a made-to-order CD that is of reasonable cost, aesthetic and quality. It's more efficient, less wasteful, and just kinda cooler. So, for those that, like me, don't like waiting for big downloads to finish, and/or still just like an actual CD, now there's that choice for any download in the jTunes store.

Full Disclosure: As a listener, I've always loved demos, b-sides, the stuff that for whatever reason didn't make it onto the artist's mainstream commercial release. I've tried to make all the twists and turns of my creative life available for anyone that's interested. Not too long ago, I released 'Fort Teen', a compilation of some very early home recordings. It was a very limited edition. Each package was hand-made and unique. In the next few weeks, I'll be releasing 'You're 16, You're 23, You're 32' in a similar fashion. It'll be a hand-packed boxed set of 3 CDs (which will be made up of home recordings that span those ages), with plenty of liner notes to give a context for the recordings. It's available for pre-order now.

Making Something Unique:
This idea for making people their own, one-of-a-kind recording, for themselves or as a gift for someone else, came into focus on a plane flight several years ago. Now, having made hundreds of them, I'm pretty sure it's my favorite idea, the most pure manifestation of what I like about making a living making stuff. I'm so happy that anyone else got what I thought was so cool about it.

Homes and Lives:
I've always loved the idea of music actually being in people's homes and lives. Loving music as much as I do, the fact that I've been asked to perform songs I've written at weddings, birthdays, memorial services and other significant occasions is amazing to me, to know that the music I've made is that deeply in people's lives. Thank you for inviting me. I've finally written down the information that many of you have asked for over the years.

Community: Collaborations and conversations with other artists keep lighting me up. Similarly, talking with people that help us artists make our ideas real in various ways is also very inspiring. Finally, meeting so many people, with all our different stories, is a constant source of humility and compassion. Sometimes it all comes together, like on this cool compilation my friend Matt just put out. I met Matt in the hospital in France, years ago. He's a young man fighting cancer and living life in that full way that mostly only happens when someone has a real sense of mortality. He made a really cool compilation of some of his favorite artists covering some of their favorite songs from the 90s, which was really the last time that regular ol' guitar-bass-drums rock had a true resurgence. I'm not sure if it'll happen again, as the pop universe has splintered and spread so much in the last several years. I'm all for that, but there does seem to be some innocence lost in a way. Anyway, this comp is cool. Enjoy.

Well, didn't quite make it to 10, but there's plenty there, and plenty more soon. Enjoy your day. Happy Giving Thanks, indeed.

Hi -
I know it's supposed to be *Spring* cleaning, but Fall finds me cleaning up on lotsa levels right now. On this particular level, I'm just gettin some stuff out of my house and into the houses of other folks that might be excited to have it. Some is music (and related stuff) I've made, some is music I've loved, and some is just other random stuff (guitars, gadgets, etc) that I'm letting go of.
I've always called the store part of the site the 'Yard Sale'. That comes from ideas that I've always had about selling stuff in an interactive way (even back when I was 12 and I'd trash-pick on my paper route, then have 'pick your price' yard sales every few weeks). This takes the site store yard sale to a whole 'nother level:
-There's guitars, gadgets, cool CD sets... and some weird stuff of my music, etc. that I've not put up before
-Everything's cheaper and even more flexibly priced
-Negotiable (or free!) shipping depending on what you get
-Free surprises with every order
I put suggested price ideas on everything to start that conversation, but the point is just pickin a bunch of stuff and making a reasonable offer. Just pick what you want, write to me (either via the board or on gmail, i'm jonahstuff) to ask any questions, say what you want and how much you want to pay, check on shipping, etc, pay via the super-simple digital Tip Jar (http://jonahmatranga.com/tipjar) or however you like, and I'll send you stuff. It's really JUST like a yard sale, except via the mail... Unless you live near me, in which case we can do it in person :)
So, get a bunch of stuff, cheap and fun and personal. Spread the word (esp about the stuff that's not me-related, like the other music and the gadgets, gear, etc). It's all at http://jonahmatranga.com/yardsale , of course.
Anyway, when/while I clear this stuff out, I'm working on whole new ways of getting these ideas of mine to anyone that wants to know about them. More and more handmade/unique stuff, more and more hi-quality downloads, more of the ways that have always fascinated me most, and I'm finally having the time to really address.
Speaking of other ideas, the downloads of the Covers Album and the live shows have been great. A few people with slower connections have asked that the download stuff be made available on CD, which is an idea I've been thinkin of for a long time, so now's the time. I'm committed to not making more big CD pressings, so I'll just be making them to order, or maybe doing small, numbered runs down the line. So, if you see a download you want from jTunes (http://jonahmatranga.com/jtunes) and you'd like a made-to-order CD sent to you with liner notes and stuff, just throw $10ish (or more :)) in the Tip Jar (http://jonahmatranga.com/tipjar), send me a note and I'll send it off. Make sure to include your address. It won't be anything fancy, but it'll be personal, and you'll avoid any downloading hassle.
Okay, that's a lot. The show thing is simple, got a few cool ones comin up. You can get tix for the Glassboro NYC and SoCal shows at http://jonahmatranga.com/yardsale, and while you're buying one, gimme an idea for a song you'd like to hear, I'll get it in there somehow.

Because the past is just a goodbye...
The (ir)regular ramble is below if you like. Meanwhile, main things in miniature are:
* Are Too Ts, Bird zips, new OLD posters & buttons at http://jonahmatranga.com/yardsale
* 3 new shows and a collection of homemade covers at http://jonahmatranga.com/jtunes
* No shows = Fun recording time. Let's make stuff. http://jonahmatranga.com/unique
===
September is welcome. August was weird, and in some ways, wonderful. The heart of the mess, fittingly, was right in the middle of the month, when I did 60+ tunes over three nights in celebration/memoriam of the onelinedrawing oeuvre. Those were some sweet, cathartic, thoughtful nights. The East coast run before that was perhaps even more cathartic, but I was so upside-down, it's hard to gauge what actually happened. You were really great about all of it, though.
No upcoming shows for the time being, but that's always bound to change. Meanwhile, that excellently empty calendar leaves me lots of time and no excuses, so there will be lots of singing and uploading and idea-making this month. For those comtemplating a Unique Recording (http://jonahmatranga.com/unique), the next few months will be a particularly good time for those. For anyone patiently waiting, I've finally settled a bit, so you'll have yours soon :).
My favorite impending idea lately is one I'll make a particular promise to finally begin. So, y'know how 'onelinedrawing' and 'New End Original' are anagrams? Well, there's another one that I really love: 'Alone Rewinding'. It's a perfect name for this idea, too. I'm going to start making simple solo recordings of all the tunes I've been a part of, just going down the list, making a little uniform library, puttin em up on jTunes (http://jonahmatranga.com/jtunes) as they come. In the spirit of onelinedrawing A-Z that I just did, I think I'll start with that catalog. There will be lotsa strange covers in there, too, and I'm sure things will pop up completely out of order, when they want to, as they always have.
Speaking of covers, one of the many downloads I've just put up on jTunes (http://jonahmatranga.com/jtunes) is the first in a series of cover compilations. Homemade stuff, done in all sorts of moods for all sorts of reason (or none). This one tackles Weezer, The Bee Gees, Nico, Louis Armstrong, tons more. Along with that, there are three new shows available for simple, cheap, hi-quality download. Better than iTunes in every way. I'll still sell stuff there sometimes, but it's nice to finally have a solid, fair way to this with you direct.
Beyond that, I'm dubbing this 'The Fall Of CDs'. Over this Fall, I'll be counting down whatever I have left in the garage and sellin em off in various fun ways. After they're gone, I sort of doubt I'll ever make another mass-produced CD again. Same with Ts / merch, too, I think. I'm moving towards a more made-to-order, limited-run sort of thing. Less waste, more personal, more interactive, more interesting. We shall see. Happy to be going with you through all of it.

(Full disclosure: Aside from the quick links up there, there is no more business-y stuff in this message, just some sad ramblings.)

Hi.

It's a strange relationship that we have through this music. We know each other, but we don't. We are part of each other's lives without ever meeting for more than moments, mostly. This is beautiful and sad and lots of things. For any number of reasons that a therapist could probably explain better than me, I've always instinctively searched for the most personal ways to do this rock thing. It's been incredibly rewarding in ways I never could have predicted, and it's painful in many ways that are just as unexpected.

As I was preparing this month's hello, I learned that a guy called Ryan Pink had died. Pink and I have been in touch through the music for years and years. He liked some of my stuff, didn't like other stuff, it never mattered, it goes way beyond that. He was creative, smart, opinionated, troubled, sweet, all the adjectives that come up short when it really counts. He left behind a young child, lots of art, and friends and family that will miss him dearly. I will miss him, too.

We'd been writing back and forth over the past months, me mostly gruffly encouraging him to make sure, no matter what, to grow up and showed up for his kid. We said a nice hello in New Mexico when I was there for some random lunchtime show a few weeks back. He's gone now. Whatever could have been won't be. Drugs. He was getting clean, probably just wanted one more dance with the past. Who knows. I've been there, in so many ways. Anyway, it's a strange and empty feeling that his rants won't be there on the board, that I won't get random late-night messages from him about who-knows-what, asking for help or playfully cussing me out.

Some of the other folks that knew him in any number of ways are gathering his writing and music. I'll keep everyone posted as best I can. There may also be an effort to start some sort of fund for his son, who I've never met, and may never.

This sad story of a young dad dying is all too common. It's easy to go numb, which is maybe why I've always clung to the little moments, to try to stay un-numb. Numb sure looks good sometimes.

So, in this strange, distant, somehow intimate way, goodbye, Pink. Dylan is still and always better than Waits, but I'll sing 'Heart Of Saturday Night' for you sometime. You are missed. I am crying.

It obviously feels a bit incongruous to mix all that with talking about upcoming shows and all, but that's this weird world we're in. I guess I really just don't feel up to talking about it too much right now, but I sincerely hope to see you soon. I will always be happy to keep in touch and grateful that you help me make a living doing this strange stuff. I send love to you and yours.

Check the links for all the info, there are good things happening, things I'm excited about and want to share with you. Maybe the only positive thing about sudden tragedy is that it drives home the platitude about living in the moment much better than all the cheesy cards. So let's.

Love,
Jonah

Headlines, full info below:
*Shows this week in SF, LA. Shows soon after that in NJ, NY: http://jonahmatranga.com/shows

Hi All,

As some of you know from Twit-land (http://twitter.com/jonahmatranga) and all, I was on 6 flights in 7 days recently, a dubious personal best/worst. It’s all for good stuff, no whining or anything, just kinda nuts. Hence, this one’s a bit late, some inboxes are a bit crowded, and my brain is too. For those waiting on Unique Recordings especially, apologies, they’re taking a bit longer than usual cos I hate for them to feel rushed, and everything feels rushed these days. I have found quiet times for a couple and it’s felt great. More soon.
In general, the shows I've done lately have been rejuvenating rather than exhausting, thankfully. I’m really looking forward to more singing, and slowly some of my ideas are coming around (like the avoid-Ticketmaster DIY-style thing). I’m gonna keep this one short and just give the info below. So, wish me well rocking the shows, recording with Far, and whatever else comes. Keep in touch one way or another, thanks always.

Love,
Jonah

*Shows this week in SF, LA. Shows soon after that in NJ, NY: http://jonahmatranga.com/shows

*Advance Tix direct, fee-free, with free stuff even: http://jonahmatranga.com/yardsale
I'm doing my best to be the opposite of Ticketbastard, Lie Nation, etc. Here's where you can get fee-free tix for upcoming shows and get a present, too (I'll
bring it to the show, you'll be on the list)...

*E-list fun and (more) free stuff: http://www.mailermailer.com/x?oid=13819n
I’m always happy to be friended, added or followed in all these changing ways, but I’ve thought for a while now that the mailing list is, in the end, the best
for all of us. It’s the most personal, the least funded by dumb and invasive ads, the least likely to end us up on some junk mail list, and most importantly,
the one most likely to keep us in touch over the years and through the trends (as MySpace goes the way of the dinosaur --anybody remember Friendster?).
So, as if that all wasn’t encouragement enough, here’s more: Over the next month, everyone that signs up for the e-list will get a free download of a
freshly-recorded, unreleased song (everyone currently on the list will get it too :)). So there you go. Thanks always for keeping in touch and spreading the
word in human ways. Sign up now (or tell someone else to) at http://www.mailermailer.com/x?oid=13819n

Hi all,

Some fun links for you. Life's feeling good and full. Crazy buncha
months comin up, let's keep up together. Europe and the UK, were off
the proverbial chain, if by that expression you mean incredibly
personal, sweet, and exactly what I always wanted all this to be about.
All the correspondence has been as well. So there. Thanks so much. Here
comes summer

- Love, Jonah

NEW FAR STUFF: http://thebandfar.com

How many rockers does it take to catch a really fast, weird pony?

LEONARD COHEN. LITERALLY BEYOND COMPARE.

The dimly lit scribblings of a transfixed music-lover at a truly astonishing performance.

GEEKDAY AT ILM: http://jonahmatranga.com/b..leeagh

Interviewer: Are you a mystical person?

Dylan: Absolutely.

I: Any thoughts about why?

D: I think it’s the land. The streams, the forests, the vast emptiness. The land created me. I’m wild and lonesome. Even as I travel the cities, I‘m more at home in the vacant lots. But I have a love for humankind, a love of truth, and a love of justice. I think I have a dualistic nature. I’m more of an adventurous type than a relationship type.

I: But the album is all about love – love found, love lost, love remembered, love denied.

D: Inspiration is hard to come by. You have to take it where you find it.
