Some kind words about the Blame Love 7" from some of our favorite music sites and blogs:
"...upon hearing their new single "Blame Love" about a month ago, I'll
proudly fly the Boy genius flag now. "Blame Love" sounds to me like
some great Small Factory song that sadly never was. No worries though,
because Boy Genius wear it well. They deliver perfect boy/girl
harmonies in all the right spots and right where I was hoping for it –
a killer solo! I reckon Alex, Dave, and Phoebe would be proud." - Skatterbrain
"A lot of the indie pop love has been exported to Sweden lately, but
Brooklyn's Boy Genius would like to remind you that there's some super
sweet indie pop coming from right here. The band has a brand new 7"
coming out and this is the A-side on that 7". It's a pure indie pop
ballad that soars behind the lovely guy/girl vocals. Fans of any bands
that broke out thanks to NYC Pop Fest should definitely check these
guys out. Grade: B+" - Poptarts Suck Toasted
"Blame Love grooves (of course it does!); it freewheels, it cavorts, it
spells out L-O-V-E (more in the manner of Orange Juice than Al Green),
and it has that woozy keyboard sound that says “1967”. The b-side is a
rousing, jangling cover of Miracle Legion’s The Backyard (and, yes,
that grooves, too)." - Fire Escape Talking
"Blame Love is a punchy, confident, humdinger of a song. Lying somewhere between Lloyd Cole, The Chesterfields and Jonathan Richman it's the sort of spunky little bruiser that you can imagine bouncing around to at a gig, or, indeed, miming along to in front of the mirror as you're getting ready to go out for the night. It moves, it grooves, it, ermm... proves (sorry, went a bit Keane there) that you don't have turn your guitars up to 11 and a half to make ace music these days, and that Boy Genius have pop coursing through their veins AS WE SPEAK."
"Two brilliant and catchy pop songs with irresistible choruses, and the usual jangly guitars. I especially like the A-side, “blame love”, but it’s in fact the b-side “The backyard” that stays in my ears after I have turned the music off. “The backyard” is a cover version of Miracle Legion, and although it’s not as immediate as “Blame love” it’s a really good song."
"Like a lost 7" from "the good ol' days," "Blame Love" has everything you want and nothing you don't. Jangly guitars, boy/girl harmonies in all the right places, a grooving bass line, and you know it had to happen...a shredding pop-solo!" "Blame Love" reminds me of The Brilliant Corners or maybe Bob, one of those slightly off kilter mid eighties indie pop bands who still made ridiculously catchy pop. The Backyard on the flip side makes me think of a mysterious middle ground, somewhere between the wonky pop of The Loft and the suburban country sound of The Rockingbirds. It’s a good place to be especially as the sun starts to stream in through the window. - Russell's Reviews
"Pues bien, ahora nos presentan su nuevo single, dos canciones con las
que nos vuelven a encandilar utilizando nuevamente los mismos
ingredientes que en su día les sirvieron para captar nuestra atención,
es decir, brillantes melodías, una instrumentación muy rica en detalles
y unas constantes armonías vocales chico/chica realmente deliciosas." - Lito Music

We're just back from a very exciting week in lovely North Carolina at Fidelitorium Studios with producer, musician and jack of all trades Mitch Easter. Needless to say it was simply amazing. We tracked all ten songs from our new album, Staggering, and were able to even get a few mixed. It was a life altering experience to work with such a kind, welcoming, talented and lovely human being. Besides laying done some really fantastic tracks, we were able drink a few beers, have a few laughs and even talk R.E.M. once or twice with Mitch. There's no finer way to spend a few days!
The release of Staggering probably won't be until early next year, but it's looking like we're going to release one song from the sessions on a split 7" with one of our favorite indie pop bands - One Happy Island - in the coming months.
For those needing more immediate gratification, our new 7" Blame Love will be available this week (April 28, 2009), and at our NYC Popfest show May 17.

If you hear what sounds like Boy Genius performing a Bruce Springsteen song on our page do not be alarmed. Much to Jason's chagrin we haven't become a Springsteen cover band. Boy Genius has been asked to contribute a track to the Springsteen cover compilation "Skip Some School, Play Some Pool, Act Real Cool" coming out later this year on Wiawya Records in the UK. It's a double disc set comprised of about forty pop bands.

The fantastic Norwegian music blog, Ear Drums Music, has released an Autumn themed four disc compilation of pop songs. We were fortunate enough to be asked to provide a track. The song "Eleanor" appears on disc 2 and won't appear anywhere on any future Boy Genius release. You can download the song for free here:

We arrived in Athens, GA for Popfest on Tuesday and found out we charted at 162 on the CMJ Top 200. There was much dancing in the parking lot of the Days Inn. Thanks to all the stations playing the record, and to all who are listening.

We here at boy genius HQ would like to wish you and all of yours a wonderful holiday season. Thanks so much for all your support this year.
While we have your attention, we have few year end updates for you...
Next Show: Thursday, January 3, 2008 10 PM Union Hall w/Charles Atlas & Vitamin-D
We're so excited to be playing the mecca of Brooklyn indie rock! Please come out and join us in a belated New Year's toast -- and to play some bocce! It's a guaranteed cure for your prolonged New Year's hangover.
Release News: We'll be releasing a limited edition 3 song CD on Cloudberry Records (www.cloudberryrecords.com) in March 2008. More details to come early next year...
Our full-length album, Anchorage, is due in April 2008. We're about three-quarters of the way through the recording process and we're pretty damn pleased with it so far.
Press: Jack Rabid had some kind words to say about our debut EP 'Eureka' in issue 61 of The Big Take-Over. Here's a sample from the review:
"Sounds like the Gun Club's late Jeffrey Lee Pierce singing with the "Harborcoat"-era REM 23 years ago, only with orchestral trumpets added. Keep a watch." - Jack Rabid, Big Take-over
Our favorite record store, Williamsburg's Sound Fix Records, recently call BG "your new favorite indie rock/pop," and that's alright with us.
Eureka is available at all our shows and online through iTunes, www.cdbaby.com and www.insound.com.
Thanks again for all the support this year. We couldn't have done any of it without your help.
