I have lost a good friend in the past few weeks. One who has been more like family than a friend. Stevie Gelbart was an impeccable musician, a loving father, and an eccentric artist who made no apologies for his way of life. He was a comedian. A quirky gentle soul that marched to the beat of a different drummer-for which he made no apologies. He showed me the beauty and possibility of blending the life of an artist with the blessings of raising a family. Although I was not a part of his family, he and his family embraced me fully into their fold--to the extent that they hung my picture on the wall right next to their family members.
Aside from playing every instrument known to man, he was divinely talented. When he played, no one could deny that his soul and passion were poured into every note of whatever music he was playing. The music he shared left goose bumps on the back of your neck, and gave you the assurance that only God could have created such a vessel.
Before he died, his family gathered around his deathbed, and asked him how he felt about facing his mortality, and eventually leaving this earth. His response was: "It's just trading old music for new music"
Our loss is heaven's gain. I am so grateful to have known such a beautiful soul.
