Gig Review:

Museum of Contemporary Art- Papa vs Pretty

20/09/2009

Playing at the Museum of Contemporary Art is always a good gig- the setting is intimate, the acoustics incredible and the general ambience like a subtle hint of raw energy fused with the magical gleam of alternative rock- all of which determined the Papa vs Pretty gig damned exciting before the band had even kicked off. Of course, however, when you’re standing around drinking mocktails, supping the sublime excellence of various delicacies, no one could help but greet the start of the set with a small quiver of anticipation- this was my fourth time I’ve seen Papa vs Pretty (the second time at the MCA) and, might I add, Papa vs Pretty, as always, surpassed my expectations with their dynamic brand of indie-rock, from the opening chords of “Sleep (again)” through to the more sombre (but no less kick-arse) “Shoot”. The band have only matured since the last time I saw them, with the drumming echoing the beat of the music to a pulsating rhythm in complete harmony with the rest of the band, and the unity of the set simply astounding given the relatively young age of the members. Front man Thomas Rawle seemed as passionately motivated as always, indulging in some serious numbers that seemed to reflect the familiar feelings of angst and loneliness inherent in adolescents, but never- NEVER- to the point where it appeared whiney or self-indulgent. The guitar licks and riffs rolled off the guitar with intense frenzy; the bass and drums remaining the constant force behind the music, no less talented than the guitar work, and in their consistency truly imitating music normally associated with far more "established" bands- Papa vs Pretty are an exciting band- dynamic and explosive- and to miss them whilst they’re still playing at local, intimate settings is worthy of eternal pity – this band are going to be big, trust me on that.

REVIEW:

Eventually 9pm rolls round and Papa vs. Pretty unfurl their rock and roll like no one’s business. This band is proof that the amount of facial hair has absolutely no correlation to how talented a musician a male can be. The lead guitarist effortlessly pulls off technical riffs and solos. Every song is well-structured and amazingly supported by drums and bass and the crowd is hugely appreciative. A highlight of their set is a very impressive cover of Prince’s Purple Rain. This young band has already played Laneway and Peats Ridge festivals. So soon, it will no doubt be Papa vs. Pretty vs. every-major-record-label and it will be well-deserved. After another round of applause for the trio, that cab ride was well worth the effort.

Heres a quick explanation for ya'll.

"From the Bunker" is an 8 part film series we've created. It's a bit like an EP or an Album, except it is in a visual format rather than being audio. We figured since the internet has such HUGE capability with interaction we could make it more personal if we filmed ourselves recording each song, and made little films you can watch while you listen!

SO in light of that fact and us talking all about using visual elements with the internet etc, we've also created a 'Making Of' that Ben made using footage on a separate camera during the recording of some of the sessions, hopefully it will give an insight to the process of what we're doing and what we're all about and make the whole thing make a lot more sense!

If youve missed them heres the 2 sessions that are out, come back next tuesday to see the 3rd session in the series!

Heres our EP review from Rave Magazine (http://www.ravemagazine.com.au/content/view/16212/182/) huzah!

"PAPA VS PRETTY – Papa Vs Pretty EP
(Independent)
The debut five-track EP from a high school trio, especially one named the clunky Papa Vs Pretty, might make some of you wary – but be assured, you will be won over. And quickly. From the beat-driven Cheap Trick inspired (and misleadingly titled) Ballad, to Sleep (Again)’s murky keys-and-drum Coldplay-meets-Pet Shop Boys, and on every song through the EP, songwriter Thomas Rawle’s ears have been open to music from all origins, and instead of a slop of unfocused mess, we find five tracks that require repeat listenings. Really promising."

Have a look on the myspace next tuesday to have a look at the next bunker session as well!

REVIEW:

Papa vs. Pretty are easily one of the most exciting young bands to come out of Sydney in a hell of a long time. Much of this can be attributed to lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Thomas Rawle, who is still doing his HSC. Anybody who saw Thom and his trio blow apart the pokies room of The Annandale at the recent My Filthy Riot Festival will know that these guys seriously mean business. What’s even more refreshing is that Rawles, clearly an avid musical collector given his breadth of influences on this EP, refuses to be constrained by genre or hype, instead penning songs that accurately reflect his own experience and skill. The last few years have seen a mess of teenage bands leaping to prominence without having much to show for it, including Operator Please, Ghostwood and Bridezilla, most of whom are languishing in their post-’moment in the sun’ ennui. Credit to Papa vs. Pretty then, for staying independent, hiring local management and generally not letting any success get to their heads.Standout tracks on this achingly short taste include the sublime Sleep(Again), which begins a bit like a Radiohead b-side and ends up as a rollicking piano explosion and the phenomenal Arrestem, which smashes together about five disparate sections in the same amount of minutes and demonstrates the extraordinary potential bubbling away here. Not afraid to put all those keyboard lessons to good use, Rawles comes off sounding a bit like a teenage Matt Bellamy stylistically, albeit with a lower voice. Some of the parts of this record are only going to appeal to music geeks; the innovative song structures and ornate chord changes something that most will just groove along to without a second thought. Not that Papa vs Pretty can’t do simple. In fact, the most refreshing cut off this EP is the last, the guitar/cello ballad Shoot. Here, a disenfranchised Thomas analyses his generation, lost love and the state of the world alongside a beautiful progression that could well become the next Chemical Heart or Ana’s Song with the benefit of some more studio gloss. The heartfelt lyric, ‘Lover, don’t keep me lonely’, definitely places it squarely in that category.Papa vs Pretty are climbing to the top of the pack; if you need proof, just check out one of their explosive live gigs.
