Load in Ah... the life of a Sound Dude. Work 12, 16, even 18 hour days for weeks at a time, and then take a couple weeks off to recover. Believe me - you NEED it!! Saw a lot of old friends and made a lot of new ones. Set up a LOT of equipment and a lot of "smoke and mirrors" that I am sworn to secrecy not to divulge. Yes, my faithful fledgelings, there is a LOT of smoke and mirrors.
Show call Along with all the shows plus a full week of production and rehearsals with Lil Waynes new band, I cannot even begin to tell the stories here. They say a picture tells a thousand whatevers so, please enjoy this slideshow and draw your own conclusions.
Load Out Finally the last truck of ...must be hundreds, closed it;s doors and it was time to go home. Uhh ..to the party! Yes, those who work hard MUST party hard to equal out the balance. But please remember - party responsibly. Speaking of partying responsibly, check out our LIVE Webcast which is about to hit 3 million this friday! WJAM JamTV!...or you can watch it right here on Myspace, on my home page, this Friday 9pm til 6am est USA.
Note Worthy The tribute to Michael Jackson, Warped Tour after party ROCKED! Thanx Kenny, Tony, John and all the other stage managers for a great couple weeks!

Load In The smell of diesel fuel from this multi truck/bus show slapped me in the face as a trudged thru the backstage gate after my long walk from the employee parking lot. The clock was just about to strike 8am when I signed the list of names for the stagehand crew this morning. Moments later, our commander in chief "Gene Ellis," who may be the oldest working stagehand, calls out "assholes and elbows on stage now." Luckily, I was able to avoid morning feeder and the lighting department all together. After doing a couple special projects for road stage manager John, he assigned me to backline. Basically setting up the instruments, ie drums, risers, guitar rigs, etc., which I am quite accustomed to handling since I own many of the same instruments. One thing that caught my eye besides the gaggle of vintage guitars is pictured here... ...who says no Peavey on the rider? This bebe has been on the road with .38 special forever! One of the road guys even told me a story of how they had to use it on stage one time during a guest appearance. He said the other musicians were asking "how'd you get that sound?" LOL
Show Call Deck Hand. Just the usual here ...custom drumkits, stacks of "dummy" amplifiers, and heavy wheeled metal decks and risers. The life of a deck hand is not glamorous. Sure you get to go out on stage, in front of thousands of people ...only thing is, almost no one is watching!!!!
Load Out Ahh yes! The grand finale! Multiple musicians from each of the bands join in onstage for one last song before the night is over. I haven't seen that many 50 something year olds with long hair since I stopped in the local VFW to grab a six pack up in the boondocks of Pennsylvania! Hey, don't knock it - these cats could play their instruments. Now onto the audio department, I disconnected the massive Meyers boxes and wheeled them to the truck but, the night wasn't over yet. We still had a show of our own to do! To see what happened after the show, go to WJAM JamTV It was the all stagehand band - LIVE of course, for you to enjoy! Note Worthy Our beloved Sean of the Mountain has been awarded the state trophy for Snake Charming or something to that effect. Here he is pictured putting on a show for the band members and crew with one of his numerous recently captured and deadly Rattle Snakes! Thanx Sean - peace!

Load In Montage Mountain.... sounds mysterious like Escape from Montage Mountain ... like some Nancy Drew Mystery ... rather like a nitemare on Montage Sreet for this 8am load in.
After remembering the beer ::yay:: cooler, ice, and 2 fold out chairs, I forgot my coffee. This is 7:30 am folks! Working at Montage Mountain is kind of like going camping since you're usually there 18 plus hours. So feel bad for me OK? THis day was about to get worse. About 8:15, while unloading the first of this 10 truck show, stage manager comes over and says "you six, go see Rick in electrics". WAIT A MINUTE...electrics I thought, that's lighting! I'm That Sound Dude!
Right away the word feeder was mentioned. Now don't get me wrong I love cable, I pamper cable but, like most stage hands, the word feeder gives us that sinking feeling in the pit of our stomachs like finding a human bone at the cabin your camping in.
Ok I thought, I'll do the feeder and then they'll send me back to the trucks and I'll get on the sound crew. Not!!! Rick the lighting road guy who was surprisingly easy to work with, had a bit of a problem remembering names. Since Freeze and Raphael were prolly different enough to be easily remembered, we turned out to be his all day cable guys. Socopex hell boys and girls, soco-hell.
Show Call Deck Hand. The stage was set and the crowd filtered in. With the threat of rain, ppl with lawn seats began breaking out the rain coats as Cheap Trick prepared to mount the stage. For some great pics and a link to Ricks guitars see my Heart - what's in Nancy's box blog from last year. Here is a new addition to the collection... ...namely "Truthiness" which I believe is from The Colbert Report. Cheap Trick recorded the theme track from that show. Another big wowee was Ricky Rockets drumkit here...
Ricky, who has his own custom drum company, has one of the nicest modern kits I've seen. For more information about Rocket Custom drums, click HERE
Load out Requested - back to Rick in lighting, prolly bc my name is ez to remember, to pull up all that heavy soco we laid out during load in. I'm telling them my name is Bob from now on. Finally after about a 2 1/2 hour load out and 18 hours on the mountain, the last truck closed it's doors. It was a night off for the road crew and miller time for the local crew. Another cold and foggy June evening awaited us but we didn't care, we had cold beer and a comfy fold out chair. Ahhhhh....
Note Worthy Slingers back!!!! It's going to be a crazy summer!

Load In If I had to use only one word to describe the April 6 load in for Jeff Beck at the SCC, I guess it would be wet. Wet is always better than frozen tho, especially when dealing with cable, unless of course it's wet from being frozen! The sound company out of Rochester would bring your standard EV line array and old school Crown. (racks and stacks) JB's crew would bring some beautiful Midas consoles including the xl4 (pictured below) at front of house, and the Heritage 3000 at monitor mix. Playing to the theater rather than the ballroom is always a stagehand pleasure since we don't have to bring in a stage. Stage are heavy, 4x8 decks made of wood or metal, and are on risers mage of steel. Both rooms imho sound good. The theater seats around 1800, and the ballroom holds over 2000. Show Call N/A Load Out Ahh, a rock show at the SCC! Just handling this gear is getting me jazzed up for concert season at Montage Mountain which starts in just 7 weeks! Stay tuned to TSD and WJAM for the INSIDE scoop on what really happens backstage, and some live feeds directly from the concerts! I'm still learning from the masters and so can you. Here's a shot of JB's guitar rig and Vinnie Coliuta's Gretsch drum kit. How do they get that sound? You'll have to stay tuned or lay some track here to find out. This is the ONLY studio that can show you how to get the sound of the masters. Note Worthy Couldn't decide who I liked better, Beck or Coliuta??

Load In Since I've been running the Friday Nite LIVE webcast jam session continuously on Friday nites, I was wondering how I was going to juggle a MAJOR Saturday morning concert load in, and still be able to host the show. So when my business agent gave me the choice of 7am, 8am, or 9am, guess which one I opted for? That's right...9am. By that time the stage was already loaded in, and trucks were pretty much emptied. Big break for me since I really didn't get much sleep. Even with cutting the jam short, I still had a couple stragglers at 3 am. Show Call Missed it by 1 guy. Big break for me again! Load Out After a good 3 hour break and a long hot jacuzzi, I was somewhat ready to "get the show on the road" as they say. I arrived at the SCC a bit early, and after shaking a few hands and getting some "good show" nods, (I think they thought I was in one of the bands), I made my way into the jam packed ballroom... ...or into the entrance at least! After a blistering drum solo and a quick smoke, I reported to Foome, a monitor mix sound dude I knew from a previous show. Right away, I was pulling monitors and mic cables, mic stands, side fills etc. Note Worthy Disturbed in a different way!

Load In: The Friday morning 8am load in call changed suddenly to 6am. Temperatures warmed up into the 20's but, starting work b4 sun up, it still seemed cold. This 5 truck show would have to leave much of it's show behind to accommodate The Scranton Cultural Centers small but, ornate stage. The day started with running front of house snakes. Frozen snakes! Remember aspiring sound dudes and dudettes, you must love your cable, if you want your cable to love you. This was your typical PRG set up with a PM5d. FOH sound dude Nick was more than EZ to work for, and I think he was pleased to have some pro sound dudes including 2 of 3 Gomez brothers on the local audio crew.
Show Call: Seniority pushed yours truly, TSD, from the audio department to carps for the show. Fear not, I didn't have to hammer or screw anything, just push props around and on and off the stage during the performance. Yes, I was on stage DURING the performance with local stagehand John Connor Jr. who is, as much of a pleasure to work with as his dad, John Connor Sr. We would push out the prop, namely a grass cart or cornfield wagon, and hide behind it until a cue light would tell us it's time to push it off. some of these props were pretty small so, 2 rather large stagehands hiding behind them was a bit difficult even dressed in black out. If you were lucky enough to get tickets to one of the 5 packed shows, you may have noticed one of us back there, or caught a glimpse of my rasta hat.
Load Out: Two shows on Sunday and then load out. By now, the temps had dropped into the single digits. That's COLD! Luckily, the trucks weren't completely emptied so, it wasn't the shows normal 5 hour load out. The cast and crew had the next 30 days off, and the place was filled with smiles and goodbyes and see you soons. ...And finally home to sleep for TSD. There's no place like home. There's definitely no place like my home!
Note Worthy: I'm not totally sure but, I think the crows say "kawk" "kawk"!
