Genties & ladypeople!
I'm sorry for my lack of keeping up my blog for a while now. ok, the past 4 months...
a lot has happened since the last time I wrote. my hiphop orchestra became quite a happening, we've done all major festivals and it's still getting better. Lowlands confirmed our presence at their festival, saturday night in the Alpha. between maximo park & kaizer chiefs. now I am not surprised easily as of late, all of the extraordinary seems to be quite usual thes days. but this was quite the shock to me. after all, we've been together for little more than half a year! but, as I've made myself promise, I won't categorise our status in reflection to the slots we fill. only the result of a well performed live show is satisfying.
the show's, now that's something! we've had spontaneous jams, family members who couldn't resist to climb on stage and enjoy the show from there, we've had 36.000 hands i the air on peace without the rest and for the first time in my life, I've heard the silence of 10.000 people. now that's one of the most amazing stage experiences I've ever had. thank you all!
at the moment I'm in thailand together with our hornplayer / mastercomposer Morris Kliphuis, writing the music for a recording with the Bangkok Symphonic Orchestra. the assignment was to write all the music in 1 week, then record it in 4 days. for more info, check In a Cabin With (www.inacabinwith.com)
I will keep you posted once I have more results (promise!)
all the best and until the next event,
Colin

Current mood: relieved
Li'l kitty had an adventure. sunday evening, after the Allstar Jam, I came home expecting the usual tender loving hatred kitty provides me with. unlike other days, however, she didn't show up at the doorstep. neither when I walked into my room did I find her. I spent all night looking for her, patrolling the blocks in search for a glimps of my lovely hellcat, but with no luck. Kitty had left the building.
next day when I woke up, she still hadn't shown up. now that was becoming scary, usually she enjoys scratching out my eyeballs 'round 8 AM but not today. so after one more round, I decided to go to the vet, hoping for an answer.
they gave me the adress of a lost-n-found service for pets. and there she was, apparently she was found by an elderly couple around the corner. after calling them, their message was "she's stayed out her welcome, so we put her in an asylum 1 hour ago". I was vyttttttttttttttt099999999 v (that was kitty) visualising my cat, terrorising this couple up til the point of no return. poor kitty.
so when I called the asylum, they were closed until the next day. this really scared me, my poor little fiend, locked up in a pet-prison.
first thing in the morning (12.00) I went to the asylum to pick her up. there she was, trembling with fear, screaming like a piggy. after a few wise words bout her being too young to wander on her own, they let us go.
as I'm writing this, kitty is being her usual self, gnawing on my left hand while scratching my arms.
It's good to have her back.

Current mood: recumbent
whgurlb. that's not an actual word, lat me rephrase that: ugh.
I'm zZzleepy. just returned from a trip to Groningen, I have been playing with agua d'annique for the past two days. two very nice shows, intimate atmosphere and great songs. but groningen, althoug I think it's an awesome city, is just too far away. 2 hours by car (amsterdam), wait for the train... wait for the train... wait for the train... (55 min).... Home. so that took me about mmm 4 hours in total 1 way. ah well, not that it matters, at least it was a great evening.
tomorrow is gonna be a great day. England baby! GMB and me will be shooting the video for "she blewlike trumpets", by far the most poetic track on the entire album ;) I'm looking forward to the result, if everything works out as it should, it's gonna be a great couple of days. I'll keep you posted!
the past couple of weeks have been exhausting, ever since N'slag it's a pandemonium in my schedual. Not that I don't like a little madness in my day-to-day life, but damn even my living room is less hectic (and that's exceptional)... and the upcoming weeks will be even worse, it's like walking backwards with no chance to look at stuff you might stumble upon. but well, that's life, isn't it? abd hasn't life always been like walking backwards, with not a chance in the world to actually see what's gonna happen? I mean, you can always predict your future, just like you can predictwhat's behind you. but can you ever actually see it? i'm sorry, it must be getting late...
Kitty A.K.A Le Bitch A.K.A Le Pussey ghehe.. it looks like she's encountered a worthy opponent. or more like a sworn enemy. it doesn't come in the form of a dog. not even a big one, no kitty stands her ground. it comes in the form of a pidgeon. a fucking pidgeon! ok here's the deal: she's staying over at my parent's place since I'll be gone for a couple of days. tonight, my mom calls me with a very concerned tone in her voice. "your cat is choking", is the news. apparently le puss saw a pidgeon through the window and it scared the shit out of her. the result is a cat, coiling on the floor, trying to swallow her own tongue. she's fine, by the way...
first person to donate me a digital camera wins a lifetime supply of kitty-episodes on youtube. she's fucking brilliant.
oh by the way, the 22nd of February there will be an "all-star Jam" @ tivoli de helling. expect the entire U-town scene to show up on stage, doing a freaked out jam session. and it's not just an evening, it's an evening with a cause (tam tam tahm): get In Stereo & Arts the Beatdoctor on a plain to Texas for the SXSW Festival! both acts are booked, but the festival won't pay for their tickets (!?) so by coming to the jam you will help them to pay their tickets. so please, show us your everlasting goodwill once more and support these pelgrims! and even if they won't be able to buy their tickets, at least you'll have a great evening. how do I know? by walking backwards, Just as you do.
bliss,
Colin

Wooooohooo!!!!
What a night what a night! I've just returned to my humble home and I'm feeling good, Noorderslag was awesome! it took me half an hour to recover from all the lunacy on stage (it was'nt the tightest of shows, but Fuck it). it was a risky show, we didn't have the time to really do a soundcheck and we had 40 minutes, which meant we had to skip some tracks. on top of that, we've found an almost impossible way to play a track, Blow The Whistle On 'em featuring Blaxtar. GMB on the beatbox, everyone else in a row, singing. I'd like to call it the Kyteman Choir... but the show was a blast. the crowd went wilder and wilder until security had to stop people from going in. 2000 people inside going apeshit, 500 more people trying to get a peak of what was going on inside. The reactions were absurd, allmost all of the reviews on the festival call us the best show of the evening. i feel honored...
I'm allowiing myself 1 more day of slacking, after that we will have a lot to do, I want the next show to be perfect (Melkweg, 28th of February) so it's back to the rehearsals for us.
but first, I'll have some quality time with my cat (who turned out to be a genuine bitch, she is at war with my hands and feet while she refuses to eat anything else than the most expansive food I can find. and that while I'm too broke to pay my phonebills and my rent. see if she cares...)
More updates coming soon!
all the best,
Colin

Current mood: jolly
So many things to do, so little time. Why does a life only last one lifetime? makes me angry sometimes, it means that if I want to do everything before I reach the end of the line, I'm really gonna need all the support in the world...
ok, let me explain: It's my birthday!!! and birthdays are fun, this one marks my 22nd cycle of life, which I think is quite an achievement. It means that after 8030 days I still haven't run under a bus, jumped off a bridge, comatized my brain (only a little), hijacked an airplane and failed, got shot, got stabbed, got raped, got killed in general or worse, lost my ears. yee!
Instead, I got a Kitty! I'm so happy, I'm going to pick her up tomorow, and I'm gonna call it Kitty. I think that's an appropriate name for a kitty. the other option was Rover, but I think that's more of a hamster's name.
anyways, this year I'm going to (try to ) change my life. I'm going to do my best to change other's lives as well. from this day on, even the hippies will run in fear for the positive vibes we'll represent. I think this year people will finally stop being idiots by chopping off other heads to seem bigger and stuff like that. this year will be the year of equal respect. why? because I said so! care to help out?
well, gotta go. going to fit me a pair of glasses, I fear for my eyes...
may life bless you all into happiness!
Peace and love,
Colin

Current mood: insubordinate
Ok, picture this: Yesterday I woke up with the usual thought ' what to do today?' and I ended up going to Paris. it's a complete spur of the moment-thing: i Called my translator and master of the french culture ReaZun if he was coming with me, packed my trumpet, grabbed my coat and now I'm in Paris. Strange... or is it? Isn't this what this whole European Union thing is all about? being able to travel through countries like borders never existed? to bring the people more together? we all know it's possible, but actually doing it is something else. but damn it feels good! anyways, Now I'm here, I might as well try to establish some contacts. maybe even find a way to get this orchestra in France (if we there are any french people reading this, post me a comment! I'd like that:D) another idea is to find new MC's to combine forces with. I'm sure there are many more possibilities in crossbreeding international culture and here is only one way to find out. I have the feeling this is going to be a very interesting weekend, even if nothing comes out of it it will be worth it. I mean, if my intuition tells me to go here, why not? after all, I see my senses as the only proof of my existence, so I might as well believe them, right? nothing spiritual about it, just the exact opposite.
stay tuned for more Kytemania in the near future, in these unpredictable times you never know.
all the best,
Kyte & ReaZun
ps: we're watching the french version of lingo now. looks like we ain't that different afterall... ;)

Current mood: grateful
Whoop-ti-diddely-doop-ti-fuckinggggg-do. Have I got a shitload of news for you!
Let me start off with a few words about the 26th (Tivoli de Helling, Utrecht).
What a night. That show felt as if it was the first time I ever climbed a stage to do what I had in mind all along. The fun part is, it actually was . and it felt good! Well, maybe good isn’t the right way to describe it. I’ll try and explain:
All of the songs are heavily loaded with memmories of the timesetting I made them in. and those times were weird… that’s all I’m telling you, just to be able to describe that feeling. Cause immagine this: 14 heavily loaded chapters out of a 3 year period flashing before your eyes in about 1 hour. I’d say the word “Intense” covers that.
Then I must say I’m blessed with 11 of the most loyal musicians I’ve ever worked with. They give me the feeling they trust my view on the songs and (maybe even more important) music as a whole. I mean, the stuff I’ve asked them to do… most musicians would have resigned the minute they’d walk in the rehearsalroom, but these guys and cherishable females decided to stay and enjoy the ride. The best part is, they give me the feeling they’re not doing it for me, but for themselves, which means they actually like it! Now isn’t that amazing… And those MC’s… damn they’re good. Not just in what they say and how they do it, but the way they cooperate as a whole. Immagine an MC ripping the stage one song, then the next song he takes his place in a gospelchoir making room for the next MC… Ripping the stage!!! Christmas in Kytopia, I tell you.
The Synergy on stage felt extatic. Every time I closed my eyes I was drifting off into innerspace, immages and events passing by in rapid order. Then I’d open them again and see the concentrated faces of my orchestra, playing the soundtrack to my thoughts. And the furiously energetic appearance of my brothers of the word. By the time we go to “Sorry” kyteman had left the building, leaving my mind in a complete state of anarchy (I haven’t fully recovered yet…)
I’ve had about 3 or 4 glimpses of the audience throughout the show. I think they liked it ;)
Noorderslag!!!! The day after, a lot of things started happening. apparently, the show made an impact on quite a lot of people who were there, the word has spread quite fast. The reviews have been insane, some of them even called it “one of the best shows ever seen in holland” (http://www.hiphopinjesmoel.com/articles/2973 the article is in dutch, for those of you viewing from abroad). And that for the first show… A chainreaction has taken place with bookers, programmers and festivals calling for more information. The first result is something that made me very happy: I can now proudly say we are the first group ever to be booked at the Noorderslag festival after one show. Now try and picture me in my room, hearing this news on an average weekday after waking up at 2 pm. Lol. We’re booking a tour for next year, which seems to be a little harder then we thought: our group is too large, which means we are forced to skip a lot of stages. But in return, I’ll make each and every show worthwile. So if you see our flyer hanging in the toilet, buy that ticket. Don’t wait until next time, for possibly there won’t be a next time (this ain’t a marketing tool, I’m not trying to force you into anything. All I’m saying is that if you’d like to see it, don’t wait. Ask Utrecht, haha!)
Alright, I think I’ve stowed enough propaganda in your direction. I’ll try and update this blog regularly, so check in once a while and leave me a post! Yeah, I’d like that ☺
All the best,
Kyteman
