PBS in threatening to cancel the glorious, timeless re-runs of Mr. Rogers that we so treasured as kids. Go to the "Save Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" site HERE, and take action to save King Friday and the rest of the gang, so future generations can experience them and all their kitsch magic. Don't you want your kids to be able to see the little trolley go to Make-Believe Land?

And if you dig lovely blogs, please visit my new post HERE.

Much vintage love from the Land of Make-Believe,

I'm getting ready to begin writing "Vintage NY", so I will basically be a bi-coastal vagabond for the next year, so this week I will begin unloading MANY of my fun vintage items via the magical eBay.

If you are a fan of Stephen Sprouse, Andy Warhol, Jayne Mansfield, Howdy Doody, Duran Duran, Mark Ryden, '60s dollybird dresses, '80s Valley Girl fashion, '50s wiggle dresses, the B-52's, Jack Skellington, Richard Tyler, old millinery supplies, Jean Harlow, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, etc., etc., . . . please check back often.

Runyon Canyon is a gorgeous park located in Hollywood CA. For some it is the only place we can go to be free of the noise and pollution of the city. It is a sanctuary for many people as well as animals. It is a place where we can bring our dogs and they can run freely.

For some reason our councilman Tom Lebonge has chosen to side with a very small group and IGNORE 3300+ other folks who have made it clear they do not want Runyon Canyon to have a parking lot in it!

Reasons we DO NOT want a parking lot in Runyon Canyon:

1. It is our sanctuary. We don't want cars in it. We don't want car exhaust in it. We don't want construction noise in it. The children's play area would become filled with 80 cars!!!

2. There's NO PROBLEM with parking right now! A parking lot would only be put in so the city can make money on the park. The next step would be for the city to make the surrounding streets permit only but there are mixed feeling s on this issue. The parking lot would have meters. Furthermore permit parking would be a pain to many of the people who live on those surrounding streets. Where would their friends park when they came to visit? I should know, I used to live on Hillside Ave and I never wanted the streets to become permit only. As far as I know none of my neighbors wished for it either.

3. Dogs and other wildlife would be in danger. We allow our dogs to run free in this park and now we would have to worry about cars running them over. Let's not forget the countless wild animals who would also be in grave danger.

4. The free yoga classes and the children's play area would be severely compromised by cars being by it. Have you ever tried to do yoga next to a thoroughfare while choking on exhaust?!! Do we want cars racing by children at play?! Absolutely NOT!

5. Not as many people would be able to enjoy the park. Quite simply the 80 space parking lot + the possibility of permit only parking would create FEWER parking spaces. You would be forced to pay for these few spaces even though it's been a free park for the people (and the dogs!) for years!

6. IT'S ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS AND WRONG!!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!
Tom LaBonge has ignored two petitions with over 3300+ signatures.

He has ignored the Park Advisory Board (formed at his request); the Hollywood Hills Neighborhood Council and the Outpost Home Owners Association, all of which have said, "NO PARKING LOT IN RUNYON CANYON."

We have made every attempt to get an environmental organization or an attorney to take the case Pro Bono, but without success. We are now in the process of hiring experts on noise and traffic for the upcoming hearing on SEPTEMBER 20 MARK YOUR CALENDAR (more info TBA). This will be our LAST CHANCE to prove to the city that this is the wrong choice. If we don't do it they will begin breaking ground!

Please help us pay for the legal fees and stop the degradation of the park. We thank those who have already donated so much! Your help is much appreciated.

So please leave the East Side this weekend, take a drive up the coast with the windows down, have a beer and dinner under the stars, and SIGN THE PETITION on the wall.

Thanks (call me if you want to join me) and hang ten, Miss. Jennifer

Here's some fun info about Hollywood's historic Villa Elaine apartments that are sadly being cut from my book due to length issues;

The Villa Elaine was home to many artists and musicians, starting at it's construction int he 1920s. It's famous residents included; the surrealist photographer Man Ray, writer Henry Miller, Orson Wells and Frank Sinatra (during his first years recording in Los Angeles). James Dean also spent much time visiting friends here, since the garage where he kept his beloved Porches was a couple of doors down. It's seen better years, but is still home to many artists, writers and musicians wanting to feed off the creative energy of its illustrious past. 1245 Vine St.
