Fred here. I've gotten alot of very warm emails today about the passing of the great Bo Diddley. What can i say? He was a HUGE inspiration for me, as well as the band. We still - to this day - play 'I Can Tell' in tribute to him. Check out his original version of that song. You can easily find it on Itunes. It IS soul singing.

In fact, one of our first gigs back in 199- ...something... was opening for him and then being his backup band in Charlotte NC. Truly one of the best days of my life. Ever. Playing drums for Bo f**king Diddley!! He was only supposed to play an hour and change. He had so much fun, he ended up playing over 2 hours. I like to think we had a hand in that.

After the show, the dressing room was packed with all kinds of young, pseudo-hipster white kids asking all sorts of questions while he relaxed backstage. When there was a gap in the conversation, I asked him what advice he'd give to a young band just starting out.

He paused for a moment and then said...with great purpose, I might add, 'keep it simple, and think of church.'

'Nuff said.

He made his music his way, traveled the world, and lived one hell of a life.

We should all be so lucky.

One of my most treasured possessions is a vinyl copy of his 'Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger' album. That album got this hungry, crazy, tragic, romantic kid thru alot. Still does.

I won't bore you with any of my Bo Diddley epiphany moments. Suffice it to say that there are many. I will say, though, that he and Joe Strummer were 2 of the only singers I ever heard who sang outside like i FELT inside.

And I met them both.

Lucky me.

I'm honored to have listened to him, played with him, and interacted with him for a brief moment on this hunk of spinning rock we call earth. Now I think I'll go crank 'Gunslinger' on my turntable.
