60 ans plus tard, alors que les avancées et les améliorations se sont multipliées, et que les militants se sont dressés, chaque jour plus nombreux, le défi est toujours à relever. Et aujourd’hui, pour que la Déclaration universelle des Droits de l’Homme puisse continuer à nous protéger, mobilisons-nous plus que jamais. ....

Op 10 december 2008 worden de dertig artikelen van de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens gevierd en komen wij samen op voor onze fundamentele rechten. Op die dag verzorgt ARNO samen met zijn band een exclusief optreden in de AB. Het concert is een hommage aan alle slachtoffers van discriminatie en een aanmoediging voor alle mensenrechtenactivisten. De opbrengst van het concert gaan integraal naar Amnesty International.....

Op 10 december 1948 ondertekenden 58 landen het eerste internationale verdrag dat de rechten en vrijheden van elk individu erkent. 30 artikelen als verdedigingsmuur tegen beulen en hun medeplichtigen, zodat mensenrechtenschendingen aan de kaak kunnen worden gesteld en respect voor onze meest fundamentele rechten kan worden afgedwongen.....

Er is ondertussen heel wat vooruitgang geboekt en dagelijks laten meer en meer overtuigde activisten van zich horen. Toch blijft de verdediging van mensenrechten zestig jaar later nog steeds een uitdaging. Laat ons daarom vandaag massaal mobiliseren om de belofte van de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens waar te maken.....

On the 10^th of December 1948, 58 countries adopted the first international text which recognizes the rights and freedoms of all individuals. 30 articles erected as a protection against torturers and the other violators of human rights.  

60 years later, despite the advances in the respect of human rights and the ever-growing community of human rights defenders, the challenge is still very real. Today, become a human rights defender.

Covers Cocktail

Arno Hintjens needs no introduction. He's had books and television programmes devoted to him. You've known who he is for a long time. And what about his music? Any self-respecting person already knows it by heart. And his concert performances? They sell out in no time. Young or old, male or female, beautiful or ugly, fat or thin, clean or dirty—everyone from Ostend to New York by way of Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Geneva, Marseille, Beirut...everyone is left spellbound by so much conviction on stage.

So, do we have anything new to say about ARNO? Well, yes, in fact, we do. For example, with "Covers Cocktail" you're in the possession of a unique CD that includes no fewer than 20 cover versions performed by a artist of genius, someone who could elevate the Brabançonne (Belgium's national anthem) or the Marseillaise into a stirring piece of music. Although luckily he's never done that, at least not consciously.

After TC Matic split up in 1986, he very quickly released an eponymous solo disc ("ARNO") but if we generously and lovingly overlook that and date his beginnings as a solo artist to "Charlatan", it'll be exactly 20 years since he truly captured attention under his own name. In all that time there's scarcely been a single ARNO record on which he didn't pay homage to a fellow artist with a well-chosen cover, or wrong footed his listeners by recording a song they wouldn't have expected from him, like ABBA's "Knowing Me Knowing You" to name just one (that was a bonus track on 2004's "French Bazaar"). Now, the best covers from all those years—from the classic "Trouble in Mind", recorded in 1988, to 2008's "I Want to Break Free"—are for the first and only time collected on one CD.

The main thing about "Covers Cocktail" is that it consists entirely of songs by other artists—some familiar, others much less so—that ARNO has revamped in his own manner,  sometimes to the point of unrecognition, and thoroughly adopted as if he'd written the track himself. It's like a completely new song. These people must be extremely surprised to find themselves on the same disc: Melanie, the innocent young hippie girl of yesteryear (whose "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma" has been redone in franglais fashion, "Ils ont changé ma chanson", by Arno and his current co-conspirator, Stephan Eicher), followed by ABBA, Jacques Brel ("Voir un ami pleurer"), Nino Ferrer ("Mirza", from the tribute CD "On Dirait Nino"), Dave Davies ("Death of a Clown"), Dick Annegarn (a cracking "Ubu"),  Mott the Hoople (the David Bowie-penned "All the Young Dudes"), Claude Nougaro ("Je suis sous"), Georges Moustaki ("Sarah - la femme qui est dans mon lit") and Bowie & Jacques Dutronc, who made their acquaintance on "Jean Baltazaarrr", a perfect rock mash-up of "The Jean Genie" and "La fille du père Noël" that Arno sings with Beverly Jo Scott.

Less surprising, but no less enduring, are the tracks from albums like "Charles et les Lulus", "Water", "Charles and the White Trash European Blues Connection", "Le European Cowboy" and "Charles Ernest": "Mother's Little Helper", from the Rolling Stones; a formidably wild version of the Beatles' "Drive My Car"; "Trouble in Mind"; Rufus Thomas's "Walking the Dog"; the blues classic "Rollin' and Tumblin'", made popular by Muddy Waters; and Nina Simone's "See-Line Woman". And then of course there's "Hot Head", with its blistering harmonica solo, and "Gimme That Harp, Boy", by Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, whose words, thoughts and exploits have made him one of ARNO's icons. Nor could we forget "Elisa", the pop tune that Serge Gainsbourg sang for Jane Birkin in 1969 (see the video "Serge Gainsbourg/Elisa" on You Tube) and that ARNO covered nearly a quarter of a century later with the same Jane Birkin on "Charles Ernest". Add to all that his previously unreleased version of Queen's "I Want To Break Free", backed by a gospel and blues choir with harmonica solo, and you've got a record that scores a perfect 20 for 20.

Artists often release cover albums in lieu of studio work—though that's not the case here—to hide the discouragement and doubt they're feeling in their careers, but there's none of that on "Covers Cocktail". Over time, ARNO has plucked some classic tracks from the blues, pop, rock, funk and songbook traditions, turned them upside down and then right side up again—sometimes with reckless abandon and sometimes with sober restraint—and added them to his repertoire! And on "Covers Cocktail" they form a whole,  comfortably sitting side by side despite the years that separate them (these recordings span nearly two decades), despite the diversity of the source material and despite the fact that times have changed quite a bit, to say the least, since 1988.

A correspondent from Belgium's famous Rock Werchter festival wrote that "although it sounds crazy and impossible on paper, his combination of blues, absurd comedy, hard rock, street theatre, traditional songcraft and amazing funk culminated in a gigantic dance free-for-all…". "Covers Cocktail" is a more modest project: you can't invite all those crowds of people into your living room. But it's a celebration of both (musical) good taste and raw emotion.

Arno is still the number one ranking Belgian in the rock world, even when he's not borrowing songs from somewhere else.

Jus de box

Ce nouvel album d'Arno s'intitule « Jus de box ». Au-delà du jeu de mots, il est tentant d'y voir un résumé de la carrière du musicien Belge, qui a eu le loisir de toucher à une multiplicité de styles tout au long de son parcours. « Cet album est comme un jukebox, dans le sens où chaque morceau est différent. » explique-t-il. « Il y a un peu de mon passé : les seventies, les eighties, du TC Matic et aussi beaucoup de maintenant… C'est tout le contraire d'un concept album. » Sur son précédent album sorti il y a 3 ans, « French Bazaar », Arno s'était fixé une contrainte stylistique, presque un concept justement : écrire toutes les chansons en français, comme il l'avait fait 12 ans auparavant avec « A la Française ». Jus de Box renoue avec le multilinguisme et la diversité des couleurs musicales. On y entend autant de chansons écrites dans la langue de Brel que dans celle de Bob Dylan. Il y a même – curiosité - un titre dans la langue maternelle d'Arno : le Ostendais.

Cette diversité lexicale est bien servie par la charpente musicale de l'album : du rock. Arno a confectionné un album dynamique et bien vivant. « Let's rock till it drops » s'esclame-t-il d'ailleurs sur « I'm not into hop », une surprenante rencontre avec le rappeur marseillais Faf Larage sur fond de guitares métallisées. « Je voulais faire un disque avec un esprit rock. Tu vois le bazar ? »

Avant même de prendre la moindre option stylistique, Arno s'est attaché à écrire des titres qui figurent parmi les plus solides de son répertoire. « Je veux faire des chansons sans penser, de manière impulsive. » Plutôt que de superposer riffs, rythmes et sons efficaces, Arno a une foi inébranlable dans les vertus de la chanson à la structure classique. « Couplet /refrain / couplet / solo, avec une vraie mélodie et ça c'est pas facile. » livre-t-il comme seul secret de fabrication.

A l'heure où tout un chacun cherche à faire sonner ses disques à la façon des années 1980, Arno a retrouvé les sources de son inspiration chez les grands classiques du binaire. « Led Zeppelin, les Faces… Il y a même du disco. Et du blues, bien sûr ».

Outre les chansons et la voix d'Arno lui-même, les vraies vedettes de « Jus de Box » sont la guitare et la batterie, avec aussi quelques claviers en guest. « On a pris un batteur dans le style de Keith Moon. Il est très difficile de trouver un batteur de rock de nos jours. » Aux guitares, le fidèle Geoffrey Burton continue de tisser des climats inimitables. Mirko Banovic à la basse, constitue une section rythmique puissante avec le batteur. Fidèle lieutenant d'Arno depuis l'époque de TC Matic, Serge Feys officie aussi bien aux claviers qu'à la co-réalisation. «  On se connaît depuis très longtemps et on sait comment on fonctionne ». « Jus de Box » a été enregistré live, à l'ancienne, sans fioritures ni effets de manche.

« C'est mieux d'être avec une moche souriante qu'avec une femme belle et chiante. » chante-t-il sur « Miss Amérique », sur lequel une surprenante chorale lui donne la réplique. « J'ai pris les ch--urs de mes musiciens et les ai transposés dans une tonalité plus aigue, si bien qu'on dirait des filles. » A l'arrivée, « Jus de Box » s'impose parmi les plus grandes réussites de son auteur, qui trépigne déjà à la perspective d'aller défendre ces chansons sur les planches. « Je veux aller en tournée. C'est pour ça que j'ai commencé la musique, pas pour rester dans ma cuisine. »

Arno heeft een nieuwe CD uit – de 32^ste in bijna evenveel jaar als artiest. De titel, "Jus de box", is niet alleen een pittige woordspeling, maar insinueert ook dat we een soort samenvatting mogen verwachten van Arno's carrière. Sinds zijn beginjaren wordt de muziek van deze veelzijdige Belg gekenmerkt door een gegoochel met de meest uiteenlopende stijlen. "Deze CD is als een jukebox, in de zin dat de nummers onderling heel verschillend zijn," legt hij uit. "Er zit wat van mijn verleden in – de jaren '70 en '80 -, wat TC Matic, maar ook een heleboel nieuwe dingen. Het is de tegenpool van een concept album." Op zijn vorige CD, "French Bazaar", had Arno zichzelf een bepaalde stijl opgelegd, bijna een concept, zeg maar: hij schreef alle liedjes in het Frans, net zoals hij elf jaar geleden deed met "A la Française". "Jus de Box" daarentegen, is een kleurig spel van verschillende talen en diverse muziekstijlen. Er zijn al evenveel nummers in de taal van Jacques Brel als in die van Bob Dylan. En één van de nummers zingt Arno zelfs in zijn moedertaal, het Oostends...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Deze diversiteit in het taalgebruik past uitstekend in de instrumentale structuur van "Jus de box": dit is een heus rockalbum. Arno levert nog maar eens een dynamische, levendige plaat. "Let's rock till it drops", roept hij uit op "I'm not into hop", een verrassende ontmoeting met de rapper Faf Larage, uit Marseille. Op de achtergrond klinkt het metaalgeluid van de elektrische gitaren. "Ik wou een plaat maken met een rockspirit. Snap je 'm?"

Maar zonder zich bewust op een specifieke stijl toe te spitsen, schreef Arno in de eerste plaats een reeks nummers die als de beste uit zijn repertoire mogen worden beschouwd. "Ik schrijf mijn liedjes impulsief, zonder na te denken." Eerder dan riffs, ritmes en klanken aan elkaar te hangen, gelooft Arno rotsvast in het lied met een klassieke structuur: "Strofe / refrein / strofe / solo, met een echte melodie, en dat is niet gemakkelijk," – en dat is ook het enige wat hij over zijn recept wil verklappen.

Terwijl iedereen hard zijn best doet om zijn platen zoveel mogelijk naar de jaren '80 te doen ruiken, keert Arno terug naar de grote klassiekers van de tweedelige maat. "Led Zeppelin, The Faces… Er zit zelfs disco in. En blues, of course!"

Behalve de liedjes zelf en Arno's stem, zijn de echte vedetten op "Jus de Box" de gitaar en de drums. Nu en dan zijn ook de keyboards van de partij. "We hebben een drummer gekozen in de stijl van Keith Moon. Vandaag de dag is het trouwens erg moeilijk om een goede rockdrummer te vinden." Geoffrey Burton schept met zijn gitaar een niet te imiteren sfeer en de bassist Mirko Banovic levert in samenspel met de drummer een stevige ritmesectie. Serge Feys, Arno's trouwe kompaan sinds de TC Matic-jaren, doet een uitstekende job aan het toetsenbord én als co-producer. "We kennen elkaar al 30 jaar en voelen elkaar dus perfect aan. "Jus de Box" werd live opgenomen, op de ouderwetse manier, zonder tierlantijntjes of overbodige effecten."

"C'est mieux d'être avec une moche souriante qu'avec une femme belle et chiante", zingt hij op "Miss Amérique". Een verrassend koor zingt de repliek. "Eigenlijk bestaat dat koor uit mijn muzikanten. Ik heb hun stemmen op een hogere toon gezet, zodat je bijna zou denken dat het meiden zijn." "Jus de Box" is pas uit maar kan nu al één van Arno's grootste successen worden genoemd. En Arno zelf... die staat te trappelen van ongeduld om op het podium te klimmen. "Ik heb zin om op tournee te gaan. Ik maak ten slotte toch geen muziek om in mijn keuken te blijven zitten."
