One of Beneva's biggest fans, if not the biggest, passed away on Monday 5th January. Rachel Worral (Jones) came to many of our gigs, often persuading friends to drive her or, more often, making a bus or train trip to the venue. She wore her Beneva t-shirt with pride at nearly every gig and made friends wherever she went.
You'll be missed!

We collected £60 at our gig in Birmingham last night to donate to an epilepsy charity of her husband Paul's choice.

We’re supporting Captain www. myspace. com/captaintheband at Birmingham’s Barfly on Friday 18th April! We’re really excited about this and we’d love you to share the night with us too!

Doors 7:30pm, £8adv, 14+
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a musical era dominated by bands who seem to exist solely within highly specific camps - be it art rock, New York-style indie posturing or something similarly unappealing - Captain are a glorious anomaly. A rum bunch of five distinctly individual people, their music sounds quintessentially of itself. Consequently, Captain are very nearly unique, 2006’s most handsome black sheep. "I’ve never felt particularly part of the scene," says the band’s singer Rik Flynn, "whichever scene we happen to be talking about. It’s not something I’ve ever set out to sidestep, it’s just the way things are. Of course, I’m aware that this is something that can work against you, but right now, it seems to be working for us." He takes the cigarette he has been earnestly puffing away on from his mouth and blows a self-satisfied smoke ring. "And that pleases me enormously." Captain’s music is joyful, clattering, full of divergent moodswings, the jubilant crescendoes of male/female vocal sparring and, just occasionally, the trill parp of a trumpet. Above all else, as Rik Flynn will tell you himself, the band’s music is, "hopeful, emotional and euphoric. Whether it’s melancholy or we’re singing stories about people dying of cancer, we still want to cheer everybody up." And that they do with no little flair. Their debut album, ’This is Hazelville’, produced by the legendary Trevor Horn (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, ABC) is a triumph, a record possessing the combustible energy of Arcade Fire with the theatrical thrum of Flaming Lips and the sheer exuberance of a six year-old anticipating Christmas. You may well have already heard their debut single Frontline. Well, its bug-eyed oh-oh-OH!s are typical of the band’s ability to hypnotise. This is wonderfully involving music.

The Times They Are A Changing...

Well, in the words of Bob Dylan: "The times they are a changing"...and it's all to change for Beneva! We'll be having a break for a while as Nathan plans to go to pastures new and start a new job in Bahrain!! Nathan and I have been playing together for nearly four years, so it will be a strange experience not to be driving to a venue and performing our songs together. We've had the pleasure of meeting lots and lots of great singers, songwriters, bands, promoters and, must importantly, fans and friends who like or even love the music we make. We'd like to say a big thank you to you all!

However, this isn't the end! We're talking about doing a small number of gigs at Christmas, and we'll keep you posted on those when we get more details. Who knows what will happen in 2008?

In the meantime, there are just two more chances to catch us before Nathan leaves: at "Ditch The TV" on 27th July and then at the Greenbelt Festival in Cheltenham on 25th August. It'd be great to see you at Ditch The TV and make it a special night.

Whilst Nathan is away I will be playing a number of solo acoustic gigs and will be rehearsing a band too. Keep an eye on www.myspace.com/malce for more details (Inspire Cafe Bar on 26th July is my next gig if you're from the Coventry area).

Ditch The TV...the show continues!!!

Well, we found out yesterday that Ditch The TV will continue to run at The Albany Pub in Earlsdon, Coventry. Sue, the new landlady, has ok'd the monthly music night and Malc will host the show whilst Nathan is away, with the help of our good friend Michaela. The pub has been refurbished, the cellar and pipes serviced and the toilets ripped out too. It'll be DTTV at a new and improved Albany Pub! We've got lots of exciting acts, booked right up to December. See www.myspace.com/ditchthetv for more details...

Joining us this month...

Jon Gomm www.jongomm.com www.myspace.com/jongomm

This is John's second DTTV appearance, but his third visit to Coventry this year. He's wowed crowds at Acoustic Amnesty 5 and at Liquid Bar in Coventry and he's sure to make your jaw drop again this month! If you come to one Ditch The TV this year, then make sure it's 27th July! Here's more about Jon:

Jon Gomm is a singer-songwriter and acoustic solo performer, with an incredible virtuoso guitar style. He uses one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and sparkling melodies all at the same time. His live performances have been consistently leaving audiences amazed and delighted. His debut album 'Hypetension' has received favourable reviews and his follow up album is due in the spring. "The most inspiring virtuoso guitar performance it has ever been my pleasure to witness... with a voice to die for" "Working on the creative edge of sanity"

If you want to see him in action then have a look at a video or two on Youtube!

Also playing will be Leamington Spa's NaTash, talented singer-songwriter and daughter of our bass player and good friend Skidders!

NatTasha http://www.myspace.com/natasha_music

Natasha is a singer/songwriter from Leamington Spa, but studying at Leicester De Montfort University. She has grown up surrounded by a wide range of music, and has been playing the piano and guitar for several years. She is currently recording her debut album "I've Been Waiting..."

We're looking forward to hearing NaTasha play for us again!

That's all for now folks! We hope to see you at Ditch The TV on Friday 27th July!

Beneva create contagious melodies with harmonies galore. They can switch from heart-felt epics to quirky radio friendly songs with ease.

With
Nathan Bennett on Piano/Vocals/percussion and Malc Evans on Guitar/Vocals/Harmoncia, their voices blend together so well that reviewers have compared their overall sound similar to that Jellyfish, Simon and Garfunkel, The Beautiful South, Supertramp and even elements of The Beatles.

Beneva have recently performed at the world-famous Cavern Club in
Liverpool as part of the International Pop Overthrow festival and have taken their sound to numerous great venues including The Forum in London.

Their debut album is I'LL SAY JUST WHAT I MEAN - ten songs that showcases their ability to capture the hearts of both young and old listeners. It was beautifully recorded to capture a 'live feel' - moving in a different direction to many other bands who opt for the highly over produced route.

The tracks 'Let It Go' and 'What I'm Living For' (both on the album) have since gone onto greater things with an appearance a New York award winning and Cannes Film Festival favoured movie 'In A Man's World' (www.scottishmovie.com). Get it from your local Blockbuster Video Store now!

'Let It Go' was also chosen as MP3 OF THE MONTH in Salvo Magazine which was available in all UK Virgin Record Stores in the summer of 2005.

David Sanders http://www.myspace.com/davidsandersmusic

In 2004, David formed the band Big Origami with fellow members
Mick Fitzgerald (The Moonbears, Evilson, The Freefalls) and Steve Dullaghan (Formerly of The Primitives, The Hungry Eye, M.T.A.E). Big Origami rose rapidly and after doing a string of gigs secured a debut download single release with the highly reputable Shifty Disco Records. However, success was to be shortlived after a serious breakdown in the band. Shortly after David decided to take his guitar on a solo journey and went about speedily building a solid reputation as a unique and mesmerising singer / songwriter; gaining a strong momentum of support amongst audiences UK wide whilst touring with Hazel O' Connor (former Breaking Glass fame).

He is now performing with Aaron Catlow (fiddle) from the fantastic european, gypsy folk band - Sheelanagig. They will be recording some tunes together very shortly and will be available on cd as soon as possible.

His EP 'The House is on Fire' is available to purchase on email request.

Other artists David has supported include Paul Curreri, Devon Sproule, Miles Hunt, Dodgy,
Darren Nauendorf and Joseph Arthur

Buswell www.myspace.com/buswell

Coming from post-rock, indie, hip-hop and prog backgrounds, and playing in a band that features no electric guitars can be a bit of a challenge. Yet Buswell pull it off. Their music is a mix of many styles, but most notably gets put in the alternative/folk/pop/indie bracket. Add to that remixes and workings with hip-hop. electronica and funk/soul artists and you have one very unique band.

Growing up in Swindon, Shaun Buswell's initial plan was to perform as a solo artist, but before long it had evolved into a full band that use a core of piano, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, voices and samples to create a heady mix of provocative and intense pieces with introspective lullabies. Various additional musicians have performed and recorded with Buswell over the years, and continue to do so today. Turn up to a live show and you could easily catch someone new and interesting on stage. All playing with the spirit of Buswell.
