 After sending 70 promo copies out, we got just 1 review of our awesome Wetherbeat comp. (At least its a nice review!). From Dagger zine. 

V/A- WELCOME TO THE WETHERBEAT SCENE/1988-1991- 555 RECORDINGS- God bless Stewart Anderson. You might know him from long-running indie outfit Boyracer but he was in a few other bands too as this compilation suggests.  Apparently this comp documents the late 80’s /early 90’s scene of Wetherby High School somewhere in the north of England (a suburb of Leeds, I’m thinking ). David Gedge was a god amongst these kids and you get to hear these bands in all of their scratchy pop glory in bands you have heard of like Boyracer and Hood and some you haven’t like The Liddles (who open the record with the terrific “Kind”), Baby Doll Lounge, The Harbour Pilots, The Paisley Springtime and a few others.  A few of these early Hood songs give you an ideas of their post-punkier early days (like on tracks like  “Absolute Grey Summer” and “Tractor”) and do not miss Baby Doll Lounge’s terrific cover  of Primal Scream’s “Velocity Girl” or Boyracer’s rousing “My Favourite Pastime.” There’s 36 songs in all and from what the press sheet tells me the age of any and all band members of this was between 14-17 (when I was still cradling my Led Zeppelin records). Not sure what the price of this is but I’m sure it’s  steal at whatever Stewart is charging so go to the website to the right and get a few (they make perfect stocking stuffers and the photos of a young Stew on the inside sleeve are not to be missed).

We are proud to announce… HULABOY “Scottish Gentlemen Of Speed” / TUNABUNNY split LP + CD – 555LP92 Hulaboy is the collaborative effort of Stewart Anderson (Boyracer etc) and Eric Stoess (Hula Hoop etc), which musically over the past decade and a half has borne great fruits from the delightful combination of US and UK pop sensibilties, (with a healthy dose of pilfering from Flying Nun and Postcard records back catalogue). “Scottish Gentlemen..” ups the pop ante one more time from last years adored “Olympic Krush on The Hulaboy” LP, and features their strongest most delicious material to date. Highlights are many, but include the 8 minute LP opener “The English Mindset” where Stewart tells the tale of his introduction to the working week, and the difficulties faced by a 16 year old fishmonger growing up in a small town in Northern England. 6 tracks, (with additional secret vinyl only material!). 555 edition of 100 copies in a no-expenses-spared beautiful letterpressed sleeve. LP also contains CDr version of the songs, (so you non-turntablists, you can hang the LP on the wall and play the CD- no excuses now!). TUNABUNNY are an all girl band from Athens GA who declined to offer any other info on themselves. More at myspace.com/tunabunny HULA HOOP “Ghost Of Last Summer” LP – 555LP91 (INCLUDES DOWNLOAD CODE FOR FULL LP) Hula Hoop where spawned from the same Ohio River water as Rodan, Palace Bros, Evergreen, King Kong and other Louisville contemporaries, but with a decidedly less obvious rock-ist stance due to their combined influences, (e.g. the LP contains the standout track “Graeme Downes”, their own ode to the Verlaines lead singer). After dozens of releases and 2 well received Peel sessions, bassist Rachel Grimes left to pursue the musical collective "Rachel's" full time.
