Good afternoon, ladies and gents! The Find Your Muse saga has continued in glorious fashion the past couple of weeks, with Gretel headlining the evening bills for their three-week residency as our feature act. Idiosyncratic as ever, the lively three-piece continued to wow our regulars with their erratic instrumentation, provocative melodies and stellar lyricism. We're sorry to see them go, and encourage the lot of you to pursue their music externally, whether it be merely through Myspace or deciding to locate their show at another venue (we recommend the latter).
With talented first-time performers from Sarah Gilbert to Actual Proof in addition to returning favorites such as Owen Eddy, Case Federal, and Ben Henry, Muse regulars were treated to yet another chock-full series of salacious summer nights. Also, if you missed us last night, make sure to stop in next Monday, July 28th, to ensure yourself the experience of Actual Proof; their crisp improvisation and hellacious solos are representative of some of the best jazz in the region. We're honored to have them return as our feature artist! Until then, cheers, enjoy your week, and save your pocket change!

With an appropriately explosive conclusion to the Fourth of July Weekend, our two-year anniversary month kicked off with a bang! We had some great repeat performances, from regulars to second-timers, and the rain didn't stay the sager Charlotteans from witnessing a fantastic open mic. After a slew of fantastically varied performers, we were treated to the first of three featured performances from Gretel, an extraordinary trio based out of Boston, MA. First-time viewers of the band were awestruck by the powerful lead vocals of Reva Williams, a dynamic performer backed by the smooth serenades of Phil DuPertuis and Melissa Myers. Their eccentric array of instrumentation didn't hurt; Melissa alone serenaded us with a wild keyboard, a snazzy snare drum/wire brush combo, drumstick on plastic bucket, and the absurdly eerie accompaniment of violin bow on sawblade. As if that weren't more than enough, Gretel's superior songwriting skills and mesmerizing lyrics kept the Muse crowd parched for more. And there surely will be! Gretel is designated to rock our socks with more of the same next Monday, July 14th, as well as the 21st of this month, so make sure to get out here and partake of the musical marvels.
Hope to see you all out next week!
Cheers,
hannah & e-s

Afternoon, guys and dolls! Our follow-up to the weekend of Friday the 13th was a smashingly laid-back evening due to the resounding aural provocations of our lovely featured performer, Kim Richardson, who swung through the Queener last night en route to Johnson City. Kim kicked off her set with a swell improvisatory ditty, "The Soundcheck Song," a fun segue way into thirty-odd minutes of lovely acoustic tunes. Kim's themes ranged from tales of womanly revenge to the comfortable familiarity of hearty, attractive folk. One of the highlights of the set was her mesmerizingly dark parody of "Hey There Delilah," where she sent the audience into cahoots about blackouts and missing organs. This amiable Memphis native is welcome to be our muse again.
Come out and visit with us next Monday to see Robby Hale of Charlotte's own Bloody Organs play solo! Rob will be doing an acoustic set of his personal material and we're excited to have him on the bill. In the meantime…get enough sleep on Sunday so you can maintain our cycle of the four-day weekend!
Cheers,
hannah & e-s

Hey Folks,
We’ve got the application up for the Crown Town Showdown registration. If you’re interested in competing on April 7th, read the rules below and then follow the link to sign up!
Please Remember - The contestants will be chosen via a random lottery at the open mic on March 31st, not all applicants will be invited to participate. Please ensure that your contact information is correct, as you do not need to be present at the drawing to accept your spot.
Event Overview:
On the first Monday of each month, The Evening Muse and Creative Loafing present a songwriting and performance competition for local and national musical acts, in conjunction with the Monday Night Live! Open Mic (formerly the ’find your muse’ night). 15 performers of all styles will compete for a cash grand prize and one of three invitations to the Grand Showdown that takes place twice a year. A panel of judges will hear two songs apiece from each competitor and then select three finalists to perform an additional song. The judges will then select the overall winner who will close out the night with a final song and receives a $60 cash prize. Performers will be judged in five different areas: songwriting, vocal performance, instrumental performance, stage presence, and crowd response.
Performance slots are chosen via lottery at the last "Monday Night Live" open mic of each month (you do not need to be present to be selected), with five slots being first-reserved for out of town acts (outside of a 75 mile radius from Charlotte). Lottery requests for each showdown may be submitted throughout the preceding month in person at The Evening Muse and online at either www.eveningmuse.com/thecrowntownshowdown or www.myspace.com/findyourmuse . Artists interested in competing are encouraged to visit the regular Monday Night Live! Open mic and test the waters before submitting an application, as the experience can be very useful in gauging how you might do as a competitor.
Live recordings of your performance can be arranged with the sound engineer and made available at the end of the night for a cost of $10. Any additional questions can be directed to crowntownshowdown@gmail.com .
Official Rules:
- There is a $3 cover per player.
- Each act is limited to four players and only original music is allowed.
- An act cannot compete in consecutive months.
- Each act has 10 minutes to perform 2 songs. Performances in excess of 10 minutes will be cut short for reasons of fairness. Plan your set accordingly!
- Monthly winners may not compete again in the showdowns until the next round of qualifying.
- Grand Showdown winners may not compete in the next round of qualifying.
- One guitar amp, one bass amp, one keyboard, 3 vocal mics, 1 instrument mic, and three direct inputs will be provided. Effect pedals are the only other equipment allowed (no additional amps) besides instrumentation.
- No full drum kits – only scaled down or hand-held percussion allowed.
- Performers must check in at The Evening Muse *in person* by 7:30 the night of the showdown, or else the slot is forfeited to an act on the standby list.
- Hip Hop is welcome, but no CD accompaniment is allowed. All music must be performed live.

Hello Friends of Live Music!
This is Eric-Scott Guthrie here, giving you the weekly update on the 'Find Your Muse' Open Mic. First, as always, I'd like to thank all of you for your support in the past weeks; we are growing with each passing Monday and we couldn't continue to do so without your help, talent, and passion! We've got a lot of plans on the burner to use this open mic as a catapult to bigger and better things both at The Evening Muse and beyond in the region around Charlotte, and though they may take time, with your continued support I feel confident that we can get these concepts off the ground. But we'll get to that stuff momentarily... before we do let me take a quick moment to introduce our Feature Performer for this evening.
Julie Gribble is a singer/songwriter originally from Atlanta, but who nowadays hails more from the L.A. area. I met Julie at my workplace, Muzak LLC, down in Fort Mill, SC where she was brought in to play a couple songs and hobnob with the home office. The first thing you'll notice about Julie is her dynamic stage presence... she's cool as a cucumber under the lights, and her personality really shines as she flashes her infectious smile and interacts with the crowd. Next thing that catches you is the dynamic presence of her vocals; she's got a beautiful set of pipes that can swing from a growl to a howl to a coo, all in the same phrase. Finally you'll get wrapped up in her lyrics, as she spins her fantastic tales with a unique verbal styling and a melodic gift that will leave you humming her songs long after she leaves the stage. She's graced the set of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (to rave reviews), her music has been featured in both television and film, and she's won numerous awards across the nation. But perhaps best of all about Julie (to me at least) is that she's a great person with a fantastic personality. Make sure you introduce yourself to her if you have the chance, she's an 'ultra indie' musician who's blazed her own path through hard work and passion, and with her philosophy of 'no gig is too small' she shows how heart can translate to success in the difficult music industry!
And with that being said, now let us look to the future.... As a teaser for (what might be) the next good thing to grow out of these evenings, we're taking a look at trying to establish a songwriters in the round night on one of the other evenings (either Tuesday or Sunday) when The Evening Muse is typically closed. Our rationale for this has stemmed from a full awareness (it's even a painful awareness at times) that we've got WAY too many talented artists in the area and only one feature performer slot. Of course while we think this is a FANTASTIC problem to have it, is a problem nonetheless, especially as we'd like to continue rotating some national acts in the slot. And of course, I'd like to be able to book everyone in there eventually... but as we're getting more and more requests with each passing week we think we've got a way figured out to keep sharing the love! :-)
By establishing a 'songwriters in the round' evening, we'll be able to help you guys get more time in the spotlight and more time on the stage while also giving you the chance to work on your collaberation skills with other musicians. The basic format still to be finalized will be this: three artists will be booked in for an evening to share their songs with each other. Myself (or quite likely a different host/sound engineer) will open the evening with a brief introduction of each of the performers and a short little banter session, and then for the next hour or so the performers will work in a 'round' type environment, sharing their own songs and perhaps participating in some of the songs of the others. Finally the evening will close up with a 15-20 minute solo set apiece from each of the performers. We think it will be another great performance stepping stone, a great way to build your audience in a fantastic listening environment, and it presents another potential for folks to find a musician or two that they really might identify with. Also, it will be a paying gig, but like any other show at The Muse it will depend on how many people each musician brings, thus it will be a fantastic exercise in promotion as well!
So the big question is: when is this going to happen? And honestly, I don't know... we need a lot of momentum to be able to launch something like this in order to ensure its success and hopefully establish a reasonable "built in crowd". But I really think if you folks keep doing what you're doing by spreading the word, and if we keep having a great time on Mondays it won't be long. So keep telling your friends and family, or even the stranger that you meet at Cabo Fish Taco while waiting for the open mic to begin, about the evening. Tell them you're working with others to build Charlotte's music scene, and talk about what experiences you've had there. And most importantly, stop by on Mondays to see us (or play for us) and/or support live music in general. There's great music being played every day in Charlotte and there's room for a lot more... we just have to work to wake more folks up to what's going on!
Anyways, that's about it for this week. Many thanks to Steve and Bill, Chris Steude, Kate Minogue, Jake Troth, Devin Forbes, Blake and Duncan, Reeve Coobs, Brooke Boling, and Sauda Fuller for joining us for the first time... we all really dug your music, and we hope to see you back soon! And of course, thanks to everyone else who came out (you know who you are) or thought about coming out but bailed on us (I won't give names). Also, if you were out on July 24th check out http://twicetreasured.smugmug.com/Music/213182 or on July 31st take a look at http://twicetreasured.smugmug.com/Music/222101 . All photos are posted for the 24th, while photographer extraordinaire Mrs. Kathy Hendrix is finalizing the processing for the shots from the 31st, so all those galleries should be available before too long. Check them out, and be sure to give Kathy a big hug and a hello (at the very least) for all her hard work when you get a chance!
I trust all of you are well, and I promise that I'll start getting this email out on Saturday or Sunday by next week. But let this be a lesson to anyone paying attention... 'best intentions' do not translate to efficient music promotion, ya got to plan ahead and hit deadlines! LOL! :-) In any case, looking forward to this evening and the great music it will bring!
Cheers,
e-s for the Find Your Muse crew

Hello all you Fine Musical Types! :-)
This is Eric-Scott Guthrie dropping you a line to give you an update on the Find Your Muse open mic, but before I begin I want to thank all of your for coming out and sharing your music with us. As I've said before, our goal is to create a community and hopefully start crystallizing all of this phenomenal Charlotte (and surrounding area) talent into a much more visible and connected music scene, and your presence and music have given us a great foundation to build off of. I hope you'll continue to come out and join us as you're able, and please spread the word with your friends and family, whether they be musicians or non-musicians... everyone is always welcome!
So tonight (Monday, July 31st) is Lowry's final night as feature performer, and man will we be sad to see them go. They've really helped create a great atmosphere for our first month, and we've been able to see them evolve as well as they tried out new songs and different arrangements of old songs. We're hoping to give them a big send off this evening (they might even be hitting the road immediately after the open mic), so I encourage all of you to come out and support our friends for their final hurrah as residents at The Muse. Also, if you haven't already bought a CD, I wholeheartedly recommend it! Not only is it an absolutely fantastic album from front to back, but it would help them out as they suffered a tire blow-out on their touring van coming back from a gig in Asheville this weekend, and the extra fundage would go towards covering that additional expense! If you'd like a refresher on their music, check out http://www.myspace.com/lowry or just go back to the 'Find Your Muse' page.
But, as much as we'll miss Lowry, with change comes growth and we've got lots of growing to do! First of all, we are going to have to start enforcing the cover charge on the evening... while it's not something I'd prefer to do, lots of people (including myself) are working hard to make this possible and compensating them IS important. Unfortunately, as our numbers have grown from the week one the money contributed in donations has shrunk, so we've got to take steps to take care of our own. Starting tonight, it's $3 a person for all comers...however, with this in mind I would like to announce some very cool things we're doing in conjunction with the open mic to make it the best possible evening! Check out the below and see what you think:
- I am now accepting booking requests for the feature performer slot! Each week (excepting the case of an out-of-town act coming in for another month long residency, which likely won't happen very often) we will be spotlighting a new feature peformer at the Find Your Muse night and we want you to be on the stage! Chosen artists will play a 30 minute slot on a designated Monday, and will receive a guarantee of $50 vs. 1/3 of the door that we take in that evening (in other words, you won't leave with less than $50). The minimum requirements for this slot is simply having 30 minutes of original material and the gumption to own the stage... remember, this will be a spotlight on you and your music and a chance to showcase yourself and your writing in a wholly different light. If you're interested, please contact me with a link to an electronic press kit (EPK) type thing that includes samples of your music, pictures, and a little bit about yourself. If you don't already have one, you can check out sonicbids.com , purevolume.com, myspace.com , make your own, or find a different service to create one. And if you have questions about the booking process or EPK's, ask myself or others at the open mic... I'll be modeling my booking after many of the established venues who've booked me as a performing musician (including The Evening Muse), so other people's perspectives are just as valid as my own on how to do things!
- I'd like to introduce Mrs. Kathy Hendrix, our 'official' photographer of the Find Your Muse night. She's got a phenomenal eye and will be coming out Mondays when she can make it to take shots of everyone performing in hopes of being able to provide everyone with great quality press photos on the cheap for press kits. If you'd like to see some examples of her work, we already have some shots up on the Find Your Muse myspace site, or at http://www.myspace.com/twicetreasured . If you're interested in getting more shots of yourself, contact her directly and she'll happily work with you on it. And I should add, while she's doing this for the love of the art we should all look to take care of her. A roll of fim and processing would cost $10 and up at the store, so that might be a good benchmark 'gift' if you decide to get photographs from her... but that's just a suggestion from yours truly!
- Finally, I want to know where you're playing! If you have a show coming up that you'd like to promote, send me the details via email or myspace and I'll include it at the bottom of these emails each week! One show per act per time, so pick the big one and help us help you PROMOTE like mad...
So we hope the world is finding all of you well, and we look forward to seeing you this evening out at the open mic. If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll do my best to get back to you in a timely manner on them.
Take care till the next time,
e-s and the Find Your Muse team

Whelp folks, I gotta tell ya... we've made it through our second weekly open mic and WOW, it's been absolutely great! While we were hoping for a good turnout, we've been absolutely ecstatic at the amount of interest this event is generating as well as the talent that it's bringing out! And the best thing is, I feel we're just at the beginning... with your support we're well on our way to turning this into a Charlotte institution and I can't thank you enough! Thanks to everyone who's made it out thusfar, performers and spectators, and while I'm working at better integrating the weeks events into this page, I'd like to give a special shout out to the following folk who performed last night:
Big thanks to Grey Revell, Rachel Conti, Daniel Lambert, Michael McDonald, Natalie Royal, Ben Henry, Seth Peagler, Jacqueline McIntosh, David Huberman, Don and Anthony, Jack Sielaff, Matthew James, and Erika Blatnik!
Much of their music is listed in our 'top' 24 myspace friends, and I urge you to check out their stuff and see when they're playing around town... there are some fantatistic musicians in that bunch just waiting for you to discover them!
