Helllooo,is there anybody out theeeerrrrreeee???.......................................

happy new joy to one and all. Hark the herald, tis a brand new year and the skies are filled with warmth and joy. The birds are singing, the children are prancing Merrily, The people are smiling, walking to work in the...in the pissing cold miserable fucking god forsaken country that is England in January....sorry everyone I was trying to be positive for a change, striving to kick that old pesamistic me in to touch....'woah there' I tell myself.....

swl has got a few things to be merry about. We recently got our tune 'spite' on the 'need for speed: pro street' compooter game. Apparently our music comlements driving like a loonatic in expensive cars very well. Shame we still cant afford an expensive car for swl to go round in tho.....

Also we are knee deep in a bunch of new recordings that we are bolting together to form the looooonnng awaited yet much anticipated debut album by smallwhitelight.Weve had a few sessions recording the band at ICC studios in Eastbourne and the tunes are sounding funky fresh ladies and gentlemen!!! After a slight hitch due to an excess amount of sloe gin consumtion over crimbo we are now back on track to getting the thing finished....

we will be addressing the distinct lack of gigs as soon as the albums done,by which time swl will have become a strange dangerous animal built entirely of pent up punkindiestringy aggression, ready to unleash a rock rampage of.....really big proportions!!! shit i'v drink too much gin.

anyways wt im trying to say is we will be coming out to see you all soon with a class new album..see you shortly

This weekend consisted mainly of miles and miles and bloody MILES of motorway, interrupted twice by a couple of CLASS A gigs...................

Koko –club NME

First up was club NME on Friday at koko. We'd never played there but id seen it ont' telly as they film the album chart show there. We pulled up around the side and the stage manager opened up these big black doors which lead directly to the stage. The Harrisons were soundchecking and I managed to take a look out to the room from the side. Fuck me that place is beautiful. Its all a real deep red colour with big soft light bulbs everywhere.

Soundchecks pretty straightforward (even though jimi has to do a drum solo of Bonham proportions to get the kit right) and we get our own dressing room with cold beer and a cool view. Weve got enough time to grab a Kebab and a swift pint before show time.

At 11 45 we were all on stage, waiting behind a massive white screen. It was a bit like being on blind date, waiting to see what our future audience would look like, and to our surprise………600 people all happy, horny and up for it!!!

The atmosphere was buzzy, Loads of people dancing and getting right into it. We were all pretty fired up to see such an amazing audience in such a cool place.

Just before the last tune I thought id look up and mention the Gigantic disco ball looming way above us at the top of the theatre, and Jimi shouted 'turn it on'! within a few seconds the lights went out and the ball started spinning, lighting the whole place up with all sparkly wonderment!!!! Then we hammered into 'disco love' and it was quite a goddam rock n roll moment I've got to say!!! One of my favourite gigs so far…..

Manchester – Channel M live

Got Back to Brighton about half 4 then up nice n early for a trip to the channel M studios where we were performing with Turin Brakes and Kid Carpet.Me and John were sharing driving duties. Had to pick up Guitar man Ben Hales from Gatwick who was standing in for an absent Mak, then a couple of hundred coffee stops later and we arrive in central Manchester.

None of us are that well versed in the world of live TV and as the floor manager talks us through the run of the show we find out that Frank Sidebottom will be serving us drinks at the bar! Soundcheck is easy, then were asked to join Ollie and Gale Turin Brakes at the bar whilst the audience are invited in.

As the cameras start rolling I'm sitting there with a couple of my early musical influences next to me and Frank behind me singing bohemian rhapsody through a loud speaker whilst serving wine….bloody surreal!!!!

We get to play 4 tunes with a little interview in the middle (didn't enjoy the talking bit)I think the 250 strong crowd are a little bit perplexed by the whole thing but they seem to get into the tunes. After we play the van gets loaded up and with the thought of 300 miles of motorway we leave before Brakes play which is gutting cos they sounded amazing in the check. They were top geezers too, as was Kid Carpet who put on a cool show. I really liked his words.

The drive back was real long as we had to go via Lewisham to drop Mr Hales off (big thanks to Ben who learnt all our songs and played great! A true legend indeed). We get back to Brighton just in time to see the sun coming up. All in all a rockin weekend…….

Ooo aaar, that west country mud ain't arf shticky loik ! 15 spins in the washing machine later n im thinkin  it would've been easier to throw away the shite covered contents of the van that we dragged back from Glastonbury. T' was all good times tho oooo aaarr!!!

Thursday was our big day with a session booked at Glasto FM in the afternoon then our main gig on the late'n'live stage at 10pm. We left Brighton at 6am to allow loads of time for any eventuality! After stopping off at Tesco in Salisbury for essentials (beer, bog roll and wellies for John) were on site by 11. Couldnt believe how immensely gigantic it looked from the top of the hill.

Quick acoustic rehearsal in the Van then over to the Glasto FM hut at Worthy Farm for a little chat and 4 stripped down SWL tunes . We did Kicking the kerb, Queen of the Summer, Prisoner and Disco love with Jimi n Neil on shakers and BVs. It warmed us up in readiness for the big gig later on.We do a couple of trips from the van to the late'n'live tent to get all our gear and managed to stay pretty dry.

Later on the band met in the tent at 9. It already looked nice and busy. I think its safe to say we were pretty pumped up and by the time we got on stage i was ready to do some rockin and a rollin!! The tent was absolutely packed with hundreds of people, including loads of our mates at the front. the atmosphere was really electric and the crowd  really got into the tunes big time. By the end of the set i swear we had a couple a hundred people singing along to disco love!!! We were all absolutely flying afterwards. Job done . Then lots a beer and a bit of dancing to Dr.Meaker.

To be honest the rest of Glasto couldnt have topped how i felt after our gig on thurs so ill do a brief summary:

the rest of the wknd involved seeing loadsa good bands like Brakes,Coldwar kids, The enemy, the Monkeys and a stadiumtastic set by the killers. There was mud shit and tears, blood sweat and beers, pies lies and rainy skies, lullabies and sleepy eyes, pissing in the dark, singing with the larks and feeling pretty bent whilst fishing for your tent .

thankyou to Hilary and co, Sarah at concrete records,Steve and co at WorthyFM, Mark and Claire for keeping us and our stuff dry at your stall, and to EVERYONE who came to see us.THat was our best gig yet......

Sat 19th May.

Hastings Crypt.

It was originally a morgue and then an abbatoir but now it is a seriously grungy and very cool indie club. We played at half past the witching hour to pissed up music fans and they were great.  We gave out a load of CD's for free, forgetting that we are supposed to be seling them to help pay for the tour.....whoops, we'll be eating pot noodles again and sleeping in parks.

The venue treated us well and we couldn't have started the tour on a better note.

Monday 21st May

Southampton- The Joiners

So off we went to Southampton on a Monday night, the main band seemed to have cancelled and we were asked to go on at 8:30pm.

No one there but a GREAT sound a really good rock'n'roll venue and a few nice people came in from the bar and gave us a warm reception.

We forgot the CD's and mailing list (well we didn't) but played a really good set….warming up.

We forgot we had a rider so the vans full of crates of beer & water!! Easy drive home see you in London!! Wed 9:15pm The Fly New Oxford ST

(COME ON LIVERPOOL!!!!)

Wed 23rd May

London-The Fly

THEY LOST!!! It was hand ball though-sheesh...

Bollocks gig at the fly, the main band had no fans, everyone else was watching the footie and my amp blew up....

Roll on Bedford!!!

Friday 25th May

Bedford Esquires with The Whip.

Well here we are again at Bedford Esquires. This place is like a legend on the indie circuit and tonight was great. We arrived really late after a shit journey, accidents & traffic jams etc. Got there and saw some lovely sandwiches and stuff in the dressing room and being starving I helped me-self. 'Heh Neil' I said, 'There's some nice grub in there' and he tucked in too.

Anyway I went back after a minute to get a drink and as I walked in I heard 'who the fucks nicked that sandwhich I made???!!!' whoops it was a DIY rider...

The gig went great, we played a good one and the place was rockin.

Drove to Nottingham Travelodge-sleep-

Sat 26th May

drove to Leeds All Dayer(The Faversham).

We have to go on at 12pm instead of 3pm which is a bummer because it's empty. Strangely it was our best performance so far-even better than Southampton, great sound on stage- the promoter was cool and asked us back to do a Saturday night, yippee.

Drove straight to Birmingham to play The Twang aftershow, we are the only band on. Surprised to find Birmingham Barfly is huge, a really great venue and was rammed. Top sound guy, really knew his shit, we filmed it, it looked great and even on the video the sound is fab.We went down really well and mingled muchly and vast amounts of hangover was consumed.

Packed up in the rain- Travelodged it and then....

Sunday 27th May

Exeter Cavern.

We made good time down the M5 and even had time for a Sunday lunch and Jim got to watch his beloved Monaco Grand Prix.

The Cavern turns out to be another really cool venue, really nice people, fed us and tret us right, supported a pop band called The Hoosiers who turned up in the poshest tour bus we've ever seen with lots of nice shiny stuff & roadies & tecs....jealous?? Not much!!

The first band on were dead cool, played a Neil Youngish alt country rock thing.....(They were called 'Count To Fire' check em out in Space).

Packed the van in the rain again and headed North again (I was driving, which was shit for me coz the promoter gave us a free bar as a rider...doh)

Monday 28th May (Bank Holiday)

Saunton Sands Beach

Not enough time to go home as we are in Stoke tomorrow so we decided to drive to the beach in North Devon. The weather miraculously is perfect and there are waves so we hire boards and go surfing with a mate who engineered our first live demo's, who lives there now. Was a great day off!

Tuesday 29th May

Stoke,The Sugarmill

What's the chances of this show having any punters we think? ZERO....

But it was sold out. The first band (Transmit-Disrupt) on were dead interesting and brought a few punters and the headliners 'The Rebound' were mental. Their crowd gave us a great reception and we can't wait to go back there!!! Gave out loads of CD's to lots of cool people, had a blast there.Wicked venue too, good sound & lights....and bought some great vintage shirts too!!

Liverpool then.....

Wed 30th May

Liverpool, EVOL

Got there the back way (Chester then Mersey Tunnel) Found a cafe on the way that had reindeers in a paddock outside, we were just getting over the fact that one of them could walk on his back legs when we noticed another was playing football, I kid you not...We go in the cafe to find it is a shrine to the King himself(Elvis not Jesus). Pictures of Elvis on every wall and a GREAT fry up....

Get to the venue eventually after negociating the maddest set of one way systems and building works and closed roads in the world. Wait around all day to be told we were double booked, they pay us, feed us, give us beer and we don't play and go home feeling tottally pissed off, this is not ROCK & ROLL!!!!!

Bring on Middlesborough!!!

Sunday 3rd June

Middlesborough, Empire

Had to get up at 5.30am for this trip-feckin ell.

On the other hand I can't remember the first couple of hours when I drove and there was no traffic anywhere on this 300+ mile trip. We arrived to find that Middlesborough Live is a really cool and pretty big festival and that we were playing in a beautifull old theatre called the Empire. We checked out Harrisons, who were dead good and then played our show at 2.30 ish. Went really well, I had a terrible sound but the crowd seemed to get it and we had tons of people come up afterwards for CD's. We had some grub, chatted to the Tiny Dancers and The Twang (We opened up for the TD's in Brighton & playted the Twangs' aftershow party in Brum last week) and had to leg it back to Brighton.

All in all the tour was a massive success, we made so many new friends and have learned a lot about what it's all about.

I for one have loved it and can't wait to get out there again.

Thanks to all the people who made us feel so welcome in their towns, please come again to see us!!!

JEB

PS See you at Glastonbury (10pm Thursday Late'n'Live)
