check out peter margasak's preview of our show in the chicago reader:

chicago reader: the list

VOLCANO!, ZING! Don't let VOLCANO! fool you. You might imagine as you listen to this Chicago trio's output—the latest full-length is Paperwork (Leaf), which came out in September—that you're dealing with a cuddly, kitteny band, its lush lite-psych all playful bounciness and hyperactively hopscotching arrangements. You might think you're hearing nothing but earnestness and joie de vivre, and thus assume that the jokes—there are clearly jokes, even though it's hard to parse them—are always self-deprecating or surreal, never pointed or mordant. But then you'll hear a sour, dissonant guitar chord, a smear of distorted caterwauling, or the claws-out swipe at sanctimonious benefit-concert pushers like Bono in "Africa Just Wants to Have Fun," and you'll start to wonder what they sing about you behind your back. —Monica Kendrick
Over the past decade the local jazz scene has been a magnet for young talent, and it's been fascinating to see how each new arrival picks up and repurposes the ideas developed by the venerable acts that helped establish the scene. On their debut album, Magnetic Flux (Ears & Eyes, 2007), the quintet ZING! make clear that they've absorbed some lessons from bands like Tortoise and Isotope 217: drummer Quin Kirchner, electric bassist Matthew Golombisky, and guitarist Dave Miller craft hard-hitting, elastic grooves steeped in funk, rock, and electronica. But Miller's fleet soloing and the front-line action from trumpeter James Davis and reedist Caroline Davis come straight from modern jazz, with intrepid harmonic exploration and blasts of texture-rich noise punctuating the lyric improvisations and rigorous unison lines. James Davis isn't playing with the group tonight, and Patrick Mulcahy is filling in for Golombisky, who just left town for Argentina. —Peter Margasak

centerstage preview

Volcano!, Cougars, Zing!
Bringing together a handful of young, hardworking standouts in the avant-garde jazz and rock scenes, Zing! is as much noisy math rock as it is free-jazz. Bassist Matthew Golombisky recently moved to Argentina, but his remaining compadres should carry on the group's imposing mixture of effects and ambiance with guitarist Dave Miller (Algernon, Blink.), alto saxophonist Caroline Davis (Tomorrow Music Orchestra), trumpeter James Davis (James Davis Quintet) and drummer Quin Kirchner (NOMO, Blink.). Zing! won't appeal to jazz purists, but its original, high-quality creations should attract many fans of experimental jazz, jazz fusion, prog rock and math rock. The group opens for a pair of quality rock bands that aren't exactly conventional. Cougars, the night's second act, hits hard with no-nonsense rhythms, uncompromising rock riffs, well-placed horns and urgent vocalizations; headliners Volcano! throw together big beats, pop melodies, eccentric vocals, electronics and experimental rock structures.

okay, so maybe we weren't the best at updating our tour blog. but you know how things get..... next time it won't be an empty promise, and we vow to include all the fun stuff about strip clubs and random people we sleep with. just kidding. that never happens on our tours.

in the meantime, check out the tune created by tyler tadlock and the spirituals on their music player called "all but praises". we met tyler and a bunch of other awesome people at a space in jackson mississippi called one to one studios. one of the most inspiring groups of people, ever. he just sent us a message telling us that he sampled some parts of bad out in the tune! we are so flattered and honored!

check out the rest of his music, too. it's totally awesome! not to mention his artwork... check out the pictures, you'll be glad you did.

hope you're all doing well. zing! is on a little hiatus right now -- summer time, travels, tours, you know how things get :)

but we'll be back in FULL swing in the fall with some dates around town!! hooray!

love,

Current mood:  ninja
And now we're in New Orleans!

It's been such an awesome vibe here ever since rolling into the city 2 nights ago. After waking at 2 pm Wednesday, we had a nice leisurely afternoon checking out some pretty good italian food at this little hole-in-the-wall place called Nino's. And after devouring our long-awaited hearty meal with our good friend Anthony (of the Other Planets) we went over to Zot's for some coffee and tea (and vegan cookie, for Caroline, of course). AND, we had a nice game of Apples to Apples - little did we know that Dave Miller is an Apples shark, and totally kicked out butts on that one. But, it's cool 'cause it was just the Jr.-up-to-9 year old version.

Gig at the Blue Nile: Another great gig... Blue Nile is right on Frenchman St. where you can pretty much just go from venue to venue to venue all within the 2 blocks and check out pretty much any kind of music you want. So, it was a cool vibe in the air. We played 2 sets, and were supported by the new PA that they had there - it was nice and robust sounding...

After taking advantage of the Patron-sponsored evening (yes, much tequila was consumed, and we got some pillows and hats) we stuck around to check out the band with Karl Denson that played in the same space right after us. The band sounded really nice, but the thing that totally blew us away was the drummer. This guy was a first of all, a great drummer with a great energy and spirit - but, also had no hands. Seeing how someone can overcome adversity like that is pretty inspiring. When we figure out what that guy's name was we'll let you know.

Last night concluded listening to Monica H. and some great musicians at the Saturn Bar, where legend has it, has a large strip of the best LSD ever hidden behind one of the hundreds of paintings in the place. So, since we didn't have a chance to find that stuff, we just came back to Jimbo's and fell asleep. Right now, the Other Planets are rehearsing over here, and it's time for Dave, Caroline and James to explore New Orleans.

peace,

Zing!

yo y'all. zing in the house. currently we're in new orleans, but we had a blast in both cincinnati OH & jackson MS. we rolled up to cincinnati and stayed with this really nice couple, tim stein and his wife, ruth. they're moving to chicago soon, hooray! their place is like a bowling ally with side rooms....so long. at the comet we got killing burritos with tofu (!) and this yummy orange ginger salsa. some of us had mild, medium, whatever we had the inkling for. played some tunes on the juke box there -- the kinks, slavic soul party (!)

played some pool...

(photobucket is being stupid about picture uploading, sorry the photos are the wrong direction...)
some good tunes. good fucking burritos. the gig itself went well, we played through all of the tunes we wanted to work out (including new ones). not much of a crowd came to see us, but a friend from chicago came in (wink! -caroline met him at northwestern) with his friend, and then ruth came out with a couple friends. but you know, brah, it was good for a monday night and ya you know, we got fed and all.... nice people at the comet, and we got a guarantee, so we'd definitely recommend it to our musician friends. see video below to see how we ended the night.

we also have a great photobooth sesh... we'll have to post soon. left cincy EARLY in the morning...more riding in the car for 10 hours with fun photo sessions!

on the way to jackson, we stopped at a BP to get gas, and decided to have a workout session. yoga, lifting weights, running down hills, running around parking lots. see below for a video of dave trying to do the lotus position....

when we got into jackson, will thompson and daniel johnson met us at this awesome cafe with mediterranean food called jerusalem cafe. y'all gots to eat there if you're in jackson.... serious. best fucking salads ever. and hummus. and olives. 'cept dave doesn't like olives. or tomatoes. so we ate our awesome meals there, felt good.

on the way to our gig, we drove through some great neighborhoods, seeing lots of people in their yards, sitting on wooden blocks, tree stumps, cinder blocks, hangin' out, shootin' the shit. our gig was in this awesome area called Millsap Arts District at a place called Studio 121. This place is essentially an amazing old warehouse where lots of lovely people live. i think Austin (the owner of the place) mentioned that it used to be a warehouse that made awnings. Austin showed us around, there were so many beautiful rooms in this place, one including a piece of art by Tyler Tadock made from magazine shreds. absolutely amazing, i wish i had a picture of it! he also designed the poster for that show using our pictures from the last tour (sitting in the chairs with the yellow jacket). The Mississippi Improv Alliance and the Jackson Arts Collective put on this show and promoted the shit out of it, and it showed! They played a set before us, with one beautiful directed improvisations by Bruce Golden (percussion and various objects) and one other free piece. Others in the group were Will Thompson (a good friend of matthew & quin from back in new orleans) ..s and other objects including tambourines!, Daniel Johnson on sampler, turn table, and various objects, and Chris Alford on guitar and effects. A dancer named Michael Morris was also involved - he was SO incredible, seriously, check him out now. Probably about 40-50 people came through that night, and that's an amazing amount of people for an arts space on a tuesday night. we played on these AWESOME pods, each one of us had our own!! see?

Photobucket

the other thing was that these musicians and audience members were probably some of the most enthusiastic and energetic people we've encountered both on this and the last tour. they loved our music, and they loved it so much that we played an encore! (of course it was incongruent, what else would we play?). so then we ended up driving all the way to new orleans last night. rolled up into town around 2.30/3am, then went over to Hi Ho Lounge to listen to musicians lay down the funk! It was Skeriks's Saucefest, with lots of musicians including maelstrom (simon lott, brian coogan, skerik), and another band that skerik was leading, which was fonky. serious laying downage. stayed out till late hours of the night, arrived back at jimbo walsh's house (awesome composer/musician in new orleans, played with michael ray and sun ra), went to bed around 6am. woke up at 2, hooray! waiting around for gig tonight....

love you guys.

we're working on a podcast as we write... more love in audio and pictures and videos to come.....
