Another quick post for the weekend.
-------------------------

Cover Round-Up

ADOLESCENT RADIOACTIVE BLACKBELT HAMSTERS 1

Oh yes. They're back.

GREEN LANTERN 26

There's some discussion wether to use this for the cover to GL 26 or the upcoming Secret Files & Origins issue...

GREEN LANTERN 24, PAGES 13 & 14

Something happened here, and I'm not quite sure. I handed in this revised version of pages 13 & 14, along with all of the other revised/corrected pages, but it never saw print. Anyhow, here it is...

Been real busy, and frankly I'm not terribly inclined to bloviate here about my life and how great or how shitty it's been.

You're here to see some covers, so here they are...
-------------------------

Cover Round-Up

JUSTICE LEAGUE of AMERICA 17

This one's been in the can for a while, maybe a year or so. Looks like they finally found a story to fit the cover. Art by Ethan Van Sciver...

GREEN LANTERN CORPS 20

GREEN LANTERN 25 Variant Cover

METAL MEN 4

SINESTRO CORPS: ION 1

Not sure if this is a variant cover, or simply replacing the one used for solicits. Anyway, art by Ed Benes...

WHAT IF: WORLD WAR HULK 1

Here are a few pages from the upcoming WW Hulk What If. Really happy with how these turned out, and apparently Marvel is, too. These have been posted at Newsarama already, so I'm sure it's perfectly okay to show them here. Art by the ever-fabulous Leonard Kirk...

Just a quick update here. Finishing up Green Lantern 22 this weekend, then a couple of commissions and a little prep work for San Diego.
-------------------------

Just read that the Sinestro Corps Special is going into it's third printing, and that Green Lantern 21 will be going into a second printing. Great news. Congrats to Geoff, Ethan, Ivan and everyone else.
-------------------------

Got a very nice phone call last week from former editor Pete Tomasi. Talk about a surprise. He was incredibly kind about the final look of Sinestro Corp, and we had a great conversation all around.
-------------------------

Saw the Transformers movie over the weekend with the kids. Honestly, not a bad piece of fluff. Big, loud, dumb fun.
-------------------------

I put together a sketchbook for Ethan Van Sciver a few weeks ago, and it's off to press. Nice little package. It'll be available in San Diego.
-------------------------

Also on the San Diego front, it looks like Ethan, Patrick Gleason and I will be sitting together in Artist's Alley. And I'm hoping to convince Ivan Reis to sit down for a bit with us. You GL geeks will be able to get your fix in one place.
-------------------------

Cover Round-Up

Just a quick update here. I should have a few real jems here in about a week or so. I just got a Jonah Hex cover by Andy Kubert to work on, and it's pretty damn sweet.

Green Lantern 22

This one's been shrouded in secrecy for a while, due to possible spoilers.

Metal Men 1

This is an all-new cover for issue 1. As if you couldn't tell.

So yeah, Sinestro Corps #1 finally came out last Wednesday. Not exactly the worst experience of my comic book career, but pretty damn close. (A year after Marvel closed down Malibu Comics they tried to sue me to recover my severance pay. With interest. That was the worst experience of my comic book career).

I had originally intended to post something here as soon as the book went to press, but decided it might be best to cool of a bit before going into some semi-psychotic rant. Three weeks later, here I am.

Anyway, I want to thank the folks who dropped me a note or left comments about the book. Really, after all the difficult work, it warms my heart to hear such compliments. I even got a nice note from Ivan Reis all the way in Brazil. Made my day.
-------------------------

I'm no longer on the Green Lantern Corps monthly title. I was told I "needed a break". I was also told that I'd get the book back after the Metal Men mini series I'm working on was finished. I was also told I'd get Nightwing back as soon as my shoulder healed...
-------------------------

Somewhere in the middle of all of this I was nominated of another Wizard Fan Award. With Morry Hollowell and Laura Martin in the mix I don't stand a fucking chance, but it's extremely flattering all the same. Everybody feel free to swing by and stuff the ballot box for me.
-------------------------

So, with my third book gone, I'm forced to do the convention circuit this summer. Gotta pay for kid's medical bills somehow.

You folks can catch me at the San Diego Comic-Con July 25th - July 29th, WizardWorld Chicago August 9th - August 12th, and Dragon Con in Atlanta August 31st - September 3rd. Then a trip to New York sometime in October. I'm calling it the "Free Agent Tour". Gonna make some shirts.
-------------------------

Had the opportunity to catch up on a few movies. Pirates 3? Meh. I actually enjoyed Spider-Man 3 quite a bit. But so far, the best film I've seen all year in Ratatouille. Absolutely friggin' brilliant. After the travesty of Finding Nemo and the abomination that Cars turned out to be, it's nice to see Pixar can redeem themselves so thoroughly. Four very well-deserved stars!
-------------------------

Cover Round-Up

Not much to show this time around. I'll make it up to you guys later.

ARMOR X TPB

I was asked by Andy Smith and Keith Champagne to hammer this one out. They're both really good guys, and I always have a good time working with them.

Can't believe it's been almost a month since my last post here. I've been up to my eyeballs in deadlines, and it seems sometimes like there's no end in sight. GL Corps 13 is off to press on Wednesday, then it's back to the Sinestro Corps Special. This book turned out to be huge, and a bigger pain in the ass than I think anyone imagined. But I'm about two-thirds of the way done, and it's looking pretty sweet. I'm already making plans to make the world's biggest Appletini to swim in when I finish the thing.

-------------------------

Had a couple of season finales on TV since the last time I was here, some good, some not so much. Galactica was interesting. I don't believe for a second that Anders, Tory, Tigh and Tyrol are Cylons. The show's runners have always held their cards close to their vests, but suddenly they're all over the press talking about it. Misdirection, folks. Don't believe it.

Smallville was fun, and a bit surprising. Didn't see Bizarro coming at all.

Jericho finally started to pick up a bit after the winter break, but ultimately I think the series was kind of dull. The finale really didn't do much for me.

Interested to see the finale of Lost this week. The show's really sucked this season, hopefully they can redeem themselves.
-------------------------

Really pissed that Fox killed Drive before it even got a chance. It was a really terrific show, even if we only got to see four episodes.

Fox has a history of dropping really good shows before their times. Wonderfalls is a good example, and of course, Futurama. I guess quality TV is no real match for that bottom-feeder reality bullshit.
-------------------------

Jerry Falwell died. Somehow I just can't muster the energy to mock this sanctimonious scumbag.
-------------------------

Ah, yes. It looks like San Diego is a go. So if you folks see a big, hirsute, Baby Huey-looking guy all shit-faced and stupid, be sure to say "Hi".

It's always interesting to find out who your friends really are.
-------------------------

My good friend Fletcher Chu Fong over at DC pulled a few strings and actually got me a table in Artist's Alley in San Diego. Well, half a table. I'm told I'll be sharing a table with Freddie Williams III, artist on Robin. Still haven't got official word from Clydene at the con, so this whole thing may just go bust after all.

In the mean time, I'm trying to find lodging...
-------------------------

How about that Imus, huh? Almost sorry to see the racist old coke-hound go. Almost.
-------------------------

I'm well into the Sinestro Corp Special. The book is looking fantastic. Personally I think it's some of Geoff Johns' best writing, and Ethan is really hitting it out of the park with every page. Since Newsarama ran the first four pages in black and white this week to accompany their interview with Ethan, I'm sure it'll be fine to post them in color here...

It's been a rough couple of weeks. With family tragedies your typical shenanigans, things have been less than rosy. But, we press on, right?
-------------------------

Watched Children Of Men on disc a few days ago. Not exactly the best movie to pull one out of a downward spiral of depression. But still less depressing than the last five films Jim Carrey's made.
-------------------------

Since he's already spoken with Rich Johnston about it, I suppose I can, too: My editor, Pete Tomasi, is leaving DC Comics. Not exactly sure how much I can say about it, other than he's got himself a multi-year exclusive contract to write for DC. Now, Pete and I are friendly, but we aren't exactly friends. I hardly know the guy on any personal level. Ours has been mostly a professional relationship. But I have to say, he's one hell of a writer. His Light Brigade series form a few years ago was really amazing.

Good luck, Pete. And thanks for everything.
-------------------------

In the meantime, I'm still waiting on my double-secret, non-existent, "Top Priority" exclusive contract. It's only been seventeen months. Guess I need to be a bit more patient.

-------------------------

Just finished up my third cover for the new Countdown series. The first two with Andy Kubert (one of which is below), this latest one with Terry Dodson. It turned out pretty nice, I think, but Terry's stuff always struck me as being very much like a coloring book. But still fun. I'll post it as soon as I can.
-------------------------

Wizard Magazine is doing an article highlighting the Sinestro Corps for an upcoming issue, and they asked Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert and me to work up a piece to accompany it. I think it turned out pretty snazzy, and when he saw it, Ivan declared his undying love to me.

We're going house-hunting next week.

Feeling a bit under the weather this weekend. More exhausted than anything else. So, a couple of quick thought's and a few covers today.
-------------------------

Captain America's dead now, huh? What a pisser. I have no doubt that Ed Brubaker has something amazing planned, but as a life-long fan of Cap it's hard for me to see this as anything but a sales gimmick.

I give it two years tops before Steve Rogers is back.
-------------------------

Sat down and watched The Departed on DVD last night. Good flick. Not Scorsese's best, not even in his top 5 (Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and Cape Fear). And certainly not the best movie that I saw from last year (that would be The Prestige). But still highly entertaining.
-------------------------

And of course, I had to pick up Borat on DVD. The extras alone are worth the price of the disc. If you grab it, be sure to go to the language selection menu and pick "Hebrew". Pretty damn funny.
-------------------------

Curious where they're gonna take Battlestar Galactica now that they've killed-off ******** (didn't want to spoil it for anyone). I'm really beginning to sour on the show. New plot threads are picked up as others are dropped and completely forgotten. Feels like they're not sure where they're going. Kind of like Lost. I'll give it to the end of the season, see what happens.
-------------------------

Doing another cover for Countdown over Andy Kubert. Pretty spiffy piece, with Donna Troy, Ion, Jason Todd and... someone else. I'll post it as soon as I can.

Went to MegaCon a few weekends back. Easily one of the best convention experiences I've ever had. I won't bore you with a play-by-play travelogue like my San Diego report. I will say, I can't wait to go back next year.

It was a terrific time and I had the pleasure of meeting some really great people. Mike Perkins ( penciller of Captain America) and his pal Ruben Azcona. I was finally able to put a face to Scott Ciencin and his lovely wife. Got to see Barbara Kesel for the first time in years. We chatted about possibly pitching a sequel to the Elseworlds Finest book from years ago.

It was great getting to finally meet Derek Donovan (penciller of Conner Hawke) and Morry Hallowell (colorist of Civil War). I'd forgotten that Derek and I had worked together several years ago on Action Comics. But we had the chance to chat about everything from editors to strip clubs. And Morry is a terrific guy. Definitely want to hang with him some more.

Brandon Peterson was pretty cool. We talked about Crossgen's attempts to recruit me a few years ago, and how lucky I was to dodge that bullet. He also gave me a few coloring and FX tips and ideas.

Steve McNiven is always really cool. I only wish we had more time to talk.

Bumped into Darwyn Cook in the hotel elevator. He glanced at my name tag, looked me up and down, then said,"You really are a moose, aren't you?" Lovely fellow.

Got to meet Mike Marts, newest editor at DC. Seemed like a decent enough guy. I'd heard that Dan DiDio was supposed to be at the con, but he never showed. Too bad. I was hoping to talk over my double-secret, non-existent exclusive contract with him. There's always WonderCon, I guess.

Got to hang with Adam Kubert and his lovely wife at the Hero Initiative charity Bowl-O-Rama. I was the resident bump on a log due to my bum shoulder, but I got to spend more time with Barb Kesel, and got to gab with Stuart Sayger.

I was fortunate enough to meet the lovely Liz Hartley and Ruby Rocket. Loved the Batgirl costume, Liz. And Ruby, that Phoenix outfit is awesome. And the beautiful Margie Cox, who dressed as Soranik Natu of the GL Corps on Saturday, and Wonder Woman on Sunday. Yeah, okay. So I'm a pervy fanboy geek. So what?

Still trying to figure out the mystery of Sean Boyle. How exactly this guy get's to hang out with hot chicks all weekend, I have no idea.

Met Wayne Pygram, Scorpius from Farscape. Tried to keep my cool, but ended up spouting something stupid like, "I'm a really big fan of yours, uh, your work. On television. You know." Sometimes I'm just too cool for words.

And of course, getting to spend time with Ethan, Sharis and Hunter Van Sciver is always great. These people are family to me, and I can't wait to see them again.

On a final note, I want to thank Beth Widera and all the folks who put on the show. Beth invited me (at the barrel of a gun, no doubt), and she and her crew made it an experience I'll never forget. Although there were other media folks there, at it's heart Mega Con was a comic book show. And it really did have heart. I know that sounds silly, but after attending the San Diego ComiCon and various Wizard World cons, shows run by huge corporate interests, this was a nice change. Like the smaller, more intimate kind of shows you'd go to at a Holiday Inn back in the '80s. I hope I'm invited back next year.
-------------------------

Well, it looks like I'm not doing Batman after all. My choice, nobody else's. Honestly, my busy schedule and hectic family life I wasn't sure I'd be able to do the best job. An yeah, people are pissed about it. But I'd rather hand the book over too someone who has the time to do a great job, than hand in a less-than-stellar job, have everyone really pissed at me, and get fired for it.
-------------------------

Pulled an all-nighter Tuesday night to do the cover for the big Sinestro Corps book. Really spiffy damn piece of work, I think you'll all really dig it. I hear it'll also make the cover for June's issue of Previews. I've got about a dozen interior pages, and wow, this book is gonna rock. I'm pulling out all the stops here, too. Don't want to be accused of fucking someone because of a few pages.
-------------------------

Finished up the two-page Batman origin for issue 46 of 52. Andy Kubert did a bang-up job, and I couldn't be happier with it. I also was lucky enough to color Andy's cover for Countdown 50, a really great Joker portrait. I'll post all of these as soon as I'm able.
-------------------------
