"...There’s definitely something about the Butler
Williams. So much so, that this EP most probably marks their long
awaited ascent from the quieter unplugged circuits of Manchester’s
thriving acoustic underground. Butler-Williams have the essence of what
might be branded as fireside –folk, but in truth and in full evidence
of this mini-album of sorts, they are one of those rare acts that can
invoke a very real intimacy. It’s a closeness that can be found in the
opening track, the gently strident “You Will Learn”, quickly followed
by “Set In Stone”. On this track Noel Williams casts an intricate
backdrop of picked acoustic guitars and taking the main vocal, narrates
in almost whispering melodics. Chris Butler's superb tones illuminate
the rest of the EP. The title track, an endearing song, resplendent in
double tracked “whoas”, then melts into the appealing journal that is
“Tighten Your Belt”; a short sub two minute narrative carried by a
lilting soundtrack of drifting guitar chords. “Step back From The
Crowd” is a solid, more traditionally structured number that
convincingly mixes folk with the slow, milling machinations of indie
pop and jingling electric guitars. This is an EP that Butler Williams
can be proud of, masterfully produced by talented musician, Ben
McGarvey – it’s been a long time coming, as it mingles a sense of
experimentation with a condensed confidence and a genuinely authentic,
organic flair. As a particular bonus for those buying the record (which
is due out in vinyl) there will also be access to a rather thrilling
remix of “You Will Learn” by The Real Dolls; a treatment that is both
sensitive to the mood, but full of impulsive, striking tempos and
stereoscopic effects - yet retaining that spectacularly mellow glaze.
Butler Williams – not folk then, but utterly unmissable..."

"...Singers and songwriters are becoming a novelty at the minute, but Butler Williams are dominating the handful of exceptional solo work around. In an instance, the songs are so germane that I could stare contentedly into my rear window and minutes later be crying into my coffee cup. You can feel the personal lament seeping through this EP, especially in Chop Chop but we often see shades of Noel Gallagher's finer acoustic work in Seeds. Rightfully named because the song cultivates into a hybrid of idyllic and harmonic British folk with added harmonica to gratify all. The sound is as captivating as a windy day on a beach and the echoes will remain imbedded with you especially if you can appreciate their live performances..." www.sandmanmagazine.co.uk
"...Butler Williams continue to shine as one of Manchester's prettiest and more striking purveyors of lilting acoustica. In the case of "Keep Your Head Down", Chris Butler and Noel Williams again place gentle, life affirming vocals to the careful pick of acoustic guitar, the splash of some subtle electro loops and the causal sway of simple melodic ideas. As a result, their songs move from the realms of considered folk to ambling countrified narrations. There's always a faint touch of something affected by indie musings and it's hard not to sense that just a little bit of both Manchester own sounds and Britain's folk heritage seep through. When BW slow things down, they obtain a sound that's even more captivating and memorable, as their songs flutter amongst echoes and vivid painted dreams. Live, this duo actually sound even better and special, so what better recommendation?..." www.manchestermusic.co.uk

"...BUTLER-WILLIAMS are the real
reason to be here. They have an exciting release in the form of “Save
It For Someone Else” on Willow Records and have set off on a 24 date
tour. There’s something passionate about the understated BW sound. It’s
often hushed, but weighted with these pretty, sometimes astonishing
melodies. They save the hooklines for various instruments like glocks,
a bass drum, a melodica and of course a whistling Theremin. They have a
magical mix of enchanted, whispering songs that dance around your ears
like some kind of musical sound track to the northern lights…northern
lights …yes, that’s what they are..."

"...Butler-Williams present themselves as uber-casual, but their music is
anything but. Essentially a two piece acoustic percussion band, some
guitars, tambourines, a bass drum and a weird "sci-fi thing" were all
these two guys needed to light up a room. Melancholic and restrained to
start, they made informed and effective use of their instrumental
array, with their guitar-led ballads taking us on introspective musical
journeys, never erupting into the trap of catchy-chorus for pop's sake,
the music led at all times..."

"...BUTLER-WILLIAMS are on the main stage. "It's like a conveyor belt..." says, er, Butler or Williams. Sometimes with acoustic duos - even more than solo artists - you're left thinking maybe they couldn't get anyone to complete the band; not here. Eschewing some of the more wayward instruments they've been known to pull out in favour of two exquisitely played guitars, they're content to fill the Roadhouse with the sort of warm friendly tunes Badly Drawn Boy used to write..."www.manchestermusic.co.uk
'...Butler-Williams
endear themselves to me immediately - by soundchecking a Theremin while
I tuck into a massive fry-up. If only every day could start like
this... We didn't think anyone would be here...' I did; I'm pleasantly
surprised I got a table. One (OK, two) of the most talked-about names
on the local acoustic scene, it's not hard to see why. They have a feel
for melody that reminds me of The Go-Betweens' heartfelt indie-folk.
Noel Williams not only looks like a friendly wizard but is a fine and
versatile guitarist (and it takes a certain talent to be versatile on
an acoustic) whilst Chris Butler has a great
Badly-Drawn-Boy-goes-busking voice and juggles guitar, theremin and a
tiny little glockenspiel. And how many folky types have a song about
'getting the shit kicked out of you outside a kebab shop'? Excellent
stuff...' Cath Aubergine http://mmitc. blogspot. com/
"...BUTLER WILLIAMS...live equation is nothing less than a revelation...their sound is that found at the cutting edge of modern Mancunian acoustica. "Got no job but I got leads.." goes one line almost like a calling card, as Chris Butler and Noel Williams demonstrate that they are purveyors of great vocals and some damn impressive guitar work too. Witty, beautiful and adventurous are terms that you'd expect to find on a dating website, but Butler Williams are literally wearing the T-Shirt. Well not literally, but they do wheel out a mini glockenspiel on "Only A Few" and of course the now famously reported Theremin. There's a song about getting a good kicking at a Withington Kebab shop but it's sound tracked by a remarkable timbre and cocktail of sounds that conjure up more flavours than a fine red wine; the soundtrack to Tales From The Riverback 2008; Damien Rice on Hathersage Road; Badly Drawn Boy in Tescos; The Smiths if they had been sponsored by Takemine. Just make one up – it doesn't matter really, as with all good music, the tunes do the talking with "You're My Star" being just one good example. Ones to watch - and I'll certainly be doing that again..." www.manchestermusic.co.uk
"...there's no shortage of 20-something men touting their acoustic wares around Manchester, but that just makes it all the more impressive when you hear an unassuming duo like Butler-Williams play well-written and well-executed tunes..." Meg Vaughan, Manchester Music
"...Butler Williams...proceed to create gentle folk indebted...to Iron And Wine or Nick Drake..." www.manchestermusic.co.uk
