Current mood:  awake
Q. Can I buy tickets for just one day?
A. Yes, please look on our shows listing for the link, the main page of our myspace or our wesbite or www.r5productions.com/shows.html for links for tickets for each day.

Q. Do I need to buy a ticket or will it sell out?
A. We've never had an official sell out but we've come damn close. My suggestion is that if you don't want to risk not getting in buy in advance. This is our 4th year and we've got a great lineup, but I can't tell you 100% that we will not sell out the day of... so be smart and buy in advance or take the small chance of not getting in.

Q. How much is it to get in?
You can buy a weekend pass for all 3 days for $55 or buy advanced tickets for the specific day you're planning on attending.
Friday is $20, Saturday is $22 and Sunday is $20.
Please look for links on our myspace page and www.thisishardcorefest.com to order your tickets.

Q. I want to order a ticket but I will have to use my mom's credit card but she can't travel with me to Philadelphia to prove she paid for it ? What do I do?
A. You can either have the ticket mailed to you if you buy far enough in advance, or you can bring the print out that you get when you make the purchase through ticketweb. Worse comes to worse, come to the door with your name and the name of the Credit Card holder and you will be fine.

Q. Which hotels should I stay at?
A. Please look at our updated blog regarding a short list of hotels, or you can use www.google.com to find hotels in the local area in your price range.

Q. Can my band jump on last minute and play 1 1/2 songs? Come on man we're really tight and on tour that same weekend?
A. Sorry the lineup is full and has been like that for months. I suggest in the future, plan earlier and submit us something in the early off season.

Q. What day is _________ playing?
A. Please look at our schedule for a list of who is playing what day.
It is posted on the main page of our myspace as well each day's lineup is in the shows section of our myspace page. You can also go to www.thisishardcorefest.com if that is too difficult for you.

Q. How come Paint It Black or ________ isn't playing this year?
A. Sometimes its just not in the cards to always get what we want. With 40 bands in 3 days, plus an awesome show on Thursday Aug. 13th, I've tried to accomodate as many people as I can. Be it scheduling conflicts, bands needing to record or being on European tours its just not possible to book a fest that will have every single band that you want to see on it... I try but I am not perfect- but it always gives us something to shoot for next year :)

Q. Can I take pictures at your fest?
A. Yes you can take pictures at This Is Hardcore, but you will need a PHOTO pass to be allowed onstage to take pictures. Those of you who would like to submit their work for a pass can contact joe@thisishardcorefest.com for more info.

Q. I run XBloodyXGrenadeX Apparel, can I sell my tshirts at your fest?
A. You can contact us at joe@thisishardcorefest.com
Table space is limited and those who've had tables in the past will be honored before we consider taking new guests to the Fest.

Q. What time will Sunday end? I have to take 3 buses and a gyrocopter to get home before work Monday morning?
A. We always do what we can to keep the continuity of the fest moving quickly with excellent turnovers between bands and we do our best to get the show started on time and have it end early.
Expect the show to end before Midnight on Friday, around 11pm on Saturday and 8pm on Sunday. If we can get the shows over sooner we will but we are dealing with 40 bands and you should always allow for extra time to get where you need to go.

This is but a short list of the myriad of options that we've suggested in the past, others have told us that they've stayed with or a quick google search.

Despite the ease of using www.google.com it seems many constantly ask for hotels etc. I suggest you check a few of these out. If they are not within your budget, please google hotels in the area (after downtown philadelphia, I suggest staying in South Jersey right over the Ben Franklin Bridge or somewhere in the Northeast Philadelphia area.

Again use your best judgement as to drive times and safety of the area. I've read about 5 people to a bed in West Chester, PA , as well as many who've stayed within walking distance. You'll be the final judge of your accomodation and travelling arrangements.

V.O.D. - this will be their only show in the Philadelphia area this summer

Slumlords - One of only 2 shows they are playing this year.

Ceremony - This band has helped our fest grow and it wouldn't be a TIH without them.

Trapped Under Ice- Baltimore brawlers return for their 2nd TIH.

Coke Bust - DC XXX in the house. One of the fastest bands in hardcore and the kings of the basement/house show scene take a step up on the big stage this year for us.

Foundation - Atlanta Hardcore. 50 ATL Hardcore shirts at United Blood can't be wrong. Last year they played our preshow, glad to have them this year.

Brain Dead- the sleeping giant from the Philadelphia area. Do not miss them.

There will be more bands announced. I did everything I could do to get a full 100% band list for this announcement but somethings are better to wait on then go without.

these bands have already been announced earlier...

This Is Hardcore Fest 2009 - Our 4th Year and we’re ready to showcase again what’s best and what’s brightest - the bands that we all know and love, the bands that have busted their balls to get their name up and the ones we should be spending some extra time getting to know.  This year will feature more names from the years past than in the last 3 installments of TIH.  As I’ve always worked for the working bands, it's important to get time to the bands who were an inspiration, a favorite and for a lot of us- Bands whose songs touched us in a way that, while they’re no longer playing or as active, they’ve made an impact or we’ve become endeared to them.  While I will always push to keep the focus of the fest on those bands that are carrying hardcore in the present day, to deny a band as important in recent times as Floorpunch, or to the Suicide File who in their short time have made an impact would be wrong of us.

Reach The Sky came at a time when so many bands were trying to be the next metalcore kings or toughguy champs, yet their songs resonate still inside of so many personal memories that having them on our Fest as a Last Show wasn't even a question for me.  It Had to be done.

We as a community need to remember the bands and their messages that came before today, as it was their work that brought us to this point and their influence that birthed today’s hardcore scene.

This is not the final band list, and there are other activities before and during the weekend that we will make announced as we get closer to Fest.

TICKETS
Tickets will be on sale in June. We’ve never sold out a day so don’t stress and worry that it will sell out, just make plans to get your tickets in advance from our website or from the R5 productions site (listed below)
Ticket prices have averaged about $50-$60 for the weekend, and without a full lineup I can’t have a final # but it will not be outside of our average.  Again in about 4 weeks all this will be final and these answers will be provided.

HOTELS
I can tell you we’re working very hard to get accommodations at block rates, but if you are flying in and are worried about getting a place to stay, look at our myspace and website for local hotels. Or ask someone who’s gone before, maybe they can tell you where they stayed. Closer to the venue will cost more but may be more convenient.
Across the Ben Franklin Bridge/ Tacony-Palmyra Bridge in NJ are priced a bit cheaper but there is a commute.  Again check our sites in a few days as we’re working to update all that information to help you with your accommodations.

TABLES/LABELS ETC
Those labels we worked with in the past will be emailed in a few days and told of the table situation. Please RSVP in regards to the tables ASAP.

For new people, we also have space but again it’s a first come, first come situation.
Please contact us direct in regards to reserving table space for your Label/Merch company etc.

We DO NOT cater to any political organization, so please don’t ask for table space for your propaganda.

Again thank you all for being very patient in waiting for the announcement.
In the months to follow, look to the myriad of websites we run for the most ACCURATE information. Don’t go on rumor and gossip alone in regards to who is playing or if its sold out.

THANKS!!!!

Current mood:  thankful
Hello everyone,

This year we are jumping on things very early as we have a lot to do in our eyes to improve and push the fest further. We are hoping to hear some suggestions from you on ways we can improve. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. We want to continue making every year better then the last.
Examples,food,bathrooms,bands,hotels, vendors ...........

Thanks so much for the continuous support
Check back for 2009 updates

UPDATED DEC 11,2008

We would like to thank everyone for all the suggestions that they have been making. We have been discussing a lot of the issues we thought we may have and you all helped us with that.
The bathrooms will definitely be taken care of better.

We will not tolerate people puking all over due to alcohol whether of or under age.

We are going to start speaking with hotels to see if we can get a discounted rate for the weekend and have so many reserved rooms.

I know there is not a lot of food places in the area that is within walking distance.

We are looking into maybe having a vendor set up down the corner.

We had a big problem with people hanging outside more than inside. I understand that it is hot inside. If you plan on coming to a fest to stand outside the whole time, just don't come. Why waste the money and time to travel to be on a dirty street in Philadelphia for most of a weekend :P

After the fest last year we have been discussing doing a charity. We have been deciding whether to go with something like cancer, diabetes, or make a wish but we were also discussing about keeping it in hardcore, like with specific Families who have been hit hard by with a tragedy. It is important to continue to support each other in these times of need. Last year Colin of Arabia's van was broken into, within minutes they raised enough to cover some of the things that were lost and help them get home.

Chris X will be bringing in an animal rights/eco friendly non profit organization to table at this year's fest.

I think a map is a great idea and some lists of places that make Philadelphia so great besides the fest.

I know this may or may not fit some of your schedule, budget or interest but we will be having an official after fest part on Saturday Night. Location and scenario is being looked into now but after last year's impromptu dance party at Paddy's Well, with a lot of people in attendance from the fest we are sure will get some of you out there on the dance floor with us shakin it.

Please continue to bring in the suggestions, as you know we'd love to hear them.

The DVD of 2008's Fest has been finalized and I am sure that Eulogy Recordings will have it ready sometime around March of 08.

If you'd like to see dvd's from the first 2 years be patient, floating boy media is working to put together something that combines the footage for your convenience.

We've been working very hard to make 2009 the best yet. We've added This Is Hardcore Fest dot com! (www.thisishardcorefest.com) but this page will still serve to promote the fest as well.

We're currently chasing after many bands and trying to upstage the past 3 years by far this time. Expect to see some surprise sets (something we didn't do yet) as well as old favorites and the big boppers of today's hardcore scene.

IF YOU'RE A NEW BAND AND YOU'D LIKE TO GET ON THE FEST –Now not June and July is the time to hit us up. We went to work on our first list Sunday night of 2008 for the who's to play 2009. Get your band into us now so we can see if there is a spot on the fest or preshow…

Thanks again for all the comments and support, there will be more updates coming as the year progresses!

Category: Music

There is only so much I can ever say without going too far from what I'd originally intended ..ing on. So much of what makes this Fest a success depends on the collective efforts of everyone that its impossible to thank everyone but there needs to be accolades spread amongst the masses so maybe that's what this is about.

There is something to be said for 40 bands that spend up to six months planning out their year so they are on time and prepared for the fest so things work so perfectly… I can't thank enough, each of the bands for not only doing their best up onstage but for taking the extra efforts to be on time, be prepared and able to lend a hand when needed. This fest wouldn't work as efficiently if we had anything else but absolute cooperation and this year's fest was a cakewalk because of their professional efforts in this regard. It should also be mentioned that I was so happy to see every band give 110% throughout the sets and for supporting the other bands. It's these elements that push the quality of the sets over the top. Seeing guys who just played out on the floor or stage diving, grabbing the mic and joining in just continues the ethic of the bands are the kids, and the kids are the bands. It's an important and often overlooked aesthetic that was in effect all weekend, which was quite pleasing to see. ..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

On aesthetics, I must thank the companies who choose to spend their money and weekend sitting behind merch tables working like slaves for the masses of kids in attendance. "But Joe" you say…. "These people are working because they are making money being there". I cannot dispute that they are working and that HOPEFULLY they are turning a profit for their weekend's efforts. But they are but one small one cog in the works. They spend a minimal fee for the table space and have to get a van or rent one, find lodgings for the weekends and not included is the nasty cost of gas this summer. I am sure it wouldn't be unheard of for some labels to not come back the following year just out of these added necessary expenses. But what they serve the works is more important then whether they profit or not. When we were younger searching for music was a physical effort. Sifting through boxes in barely together stores or merch tables across the coast was a big part of the time spent involved in hardcore. The excitement of not knowing what you would find and the hope that you would walk away with something awesome kept you coming back. In this regard online shopping and cd downloading has taken away the time necessary to find what you were looking for through diligent record "molesting" as a friend once called it. I am happy to have a piece of that back. There are times when I wish for things to be simpler and this is a chance to give this new generation a piece of what made the " in between bands space" much more fun then sitting outside ending up in trouble. So thanks to the merchants who choose to sweat for their cash and serve the cause of reliving simpler days.

When we think of the fest, the "given" is that they were will be kids there in droves and they will mosh to their hearts content. I would like to dispute the concept of the kids just being there.  They are more then filler, they are more then a ticket total sold. They come from every corner of the world and they are sleeping in cars, living adventures and showing up 3 days straight to make the fest what it is. I could book every great band ever, have the best venue, perfect sound and if no one comes it will be for nothing. If the Bad Brains play TIH 2010 and the place is packed but no one makes a sound, moves an inch the set will be a failure. Its upon these kids to choose which bands will be remembered, which bands will be heralded and which bands will not make on the next year's fest. There is something to be said for this fickle generation is that they show their appreciation just as easily as their dissatisfaction. I am glad we've keep the crowd on their toes and been able to provide for them a suitable venue, good sound, an excellent stage diving and bands that bring the reactions that we've gotten. I hope to always have the kids emailing and myspaceing us with the many thanks, appreciation and great stories about their times at the fest. It is that on Monday morning that made my day. Its what keeps me thinking about a fest that still has about 50 weeks before it happens again. I am forever indebted to make sure they will always be here and they will be motivated to change the course of the night from a decent set to a moment to be remembered into their 30's.

I am never short on words or praise and the staff of R5 productions deserves a lion's share of my love. They have outshined their previous efforts this year and I am so proud to see the newer guys getting more involved. I would to believe that next year we will have 100% stage dive participation from the many staffers we have but then again if they were stage diving all night I wouldn't be able to applaud them would I?

I've never needed a partner more in a situation like this and its Sean Agnew at R5 that allows me to have this dream come to life each year. He is so humble but he is truly a big piece of the TIH puzzle and I thank him time and time again for allowing this to happen.

He is one of the most pure DIY promoters in the country and his intimate knowledge of all the inner workings has truly taught me a thing or two about the way to run this fest.

Robby Redcheeks has been an inspirational friend and supporter of my efforts since day one but he has really stepped up and cleaned the stage of the evil hardcore paparazzi that was plagued the view from the stage and keeping the bands from going off and giving the kids the show they paid for. He is not only one of the best in his craft but he is truly still living the hardcore kid life well into being a homeowner and responsible adult and that in itself is commendable.

I've been booking shows since I was a teenager yet by the time I was into my 20's I was blessed with a silent partner whose diligence and eye for details have never truly been made public but were always vital to the success of my operations. This year with the cards stacked against me, Samantha Cox has stepped up and really not only given her time and effort but has picked up slack and has played a tremendous key role in sorting out the stuff that may have fallen through the cracks on a hectic day. I look forward to her future contributions to This Is Hardcore Fest.

In the next year you will see amazing things done with This Is Hardcore. "Juice" has started his work with the website and art for next year. Eulogy and FloatingBoyMedia are grinding things together now for the best possible outcome on the 2008 DVD. I am looking forward to its release in early 09.

Finally thanks to the unsung heroes like Jeremy from Jumpstart records for not only making gorgeous posters but for putting in extra work with the fest, helping where he could. Tom and John Hiltz for the excellent sound again, Joe at Red Planet Sound for the Back line, Chris Striegal for working the show for free just out of love/boredom/insanity. Wes (PIMP) for handling the security details with an amazing efficiency and cool professional approach. I cant thank you all enough and this is already probably too long winded.

Take care and I will see you in 09

Some of the bands that we announced but are no longer playing...

108- These guys are great. Right now they have things to take care and are taking the remainder of the spring/summer off to handle business. Expect them back at full speed this fall/winter.

SHATTERED REALM – Another band we were really looking forward to, but due to lineup changes will not be playing the fest. They will however be playing Pressure Fest in Germany with Original Singer Chris (of Suffer The Living).

STEEL NATION- With a split 7" in the studio their singer flakes out and leaves them stranded. Pauly Edge of Meltdown came to the rescue but ultimately they are without a singer right now. Hopefully they will have someone by August and will be playing the PRESHOW!!

Some of the bands that we just HAD TO HAVE play this year's fest

ALPHA & OMEGA – LA's Up and Coming band of 08.. Looking Forward to this.

CONVICTED – One of our FIRST Midwest bands. Chicago has it going on.

HARD RESPONSE  - East Coast Assault 1 – Delaware HARDcore legends.

xKINGDOMx– The most sincere band to come out in years. We're happy to have them a part of the fest

MAXIMUM PENALTY- After 20 odd years they still got it. Don't sleep any longer on these guys – they're back and they're going to kick your ass. AWESOME NYHC that you can't miss

PAINT IT BLACK– They are truly one of the stand out bands of the last 5 years. PIB is back AGAIN at the Fest and its going to be fucking awesome.

POVERTY BAY SAINTS-Something a lil different then what we go for usually but we're hoping these NW rockers can get everyone's attention this year at the Fest.
REIGN SUPREME– In less then one year they've come a long way, We're happy to have a hand in helping them and they're back to have you tearing the place apart.

TERROR– Saving the best for last, over this decade there have been so many highs for Hardcore and its upon this bands back that many of them have come. They have done it all and are still thirsty for more, one of the greatest live acts of Modern Hardcore history

Thursday, January 10, 2008
There was a time in every scene big and small, old and new where things have begun to deviate from our folk tradition and culture into something that has led the world we live in to feel dirty or wrong in some ways. I hope to do my little part and bring back the aspect of the dirty word "unity". That's right, just like my old friend Rick Ta Life, I feel like there is a sense of division amongst bands, kids and our world is not sitting properly aligned the way it used to. I've always tried my best to look at someone at a show as an equal important part of the hardcore world. I've always tried to see my fellow bands on tour as another piece in this old puzzle. Whether or not it was the stuff I was into, I couldn't argue or not relate to these guys who were miles from home, dirty, sweating and tired but loving every second of it the way that I did.

I type these words thinking about my first show at Gilman Street. Summer of '99 Comin' Correct, Dysphoria, All Bets Off with if my memory serves me Kill The Man Who Questions and Pg. 99 as well as Sworn Vengeance jumping up for songs?? Either way here I am across the country for the first time in my life staring in the eyes of guys from my home city who've I never had a real conversation with but being there at that moment we felt more inclined to speak then ever before. This is despite being from the same hometown, being at the same shows and why? Because I was the jerk who started silly shit at shows, got shows shut down and was a little prick and these guys were some of the most thought provoking, sensible guys in the core. I still feel and hold Mike Mckee to that level of quality. Years later and I can talk to him as an old friend because we had that moment where we forgot the nonsense that kept us from communicating at home and really just kicked it out front of Gilman Street.

I bring this memory up and its relevance to what I am trying to say about hardcore now by pointing out that I can't think of how many shows I've played, booked, been to where the connection was so weak. Where the bands didn't even watch other, where you didn't even know whom to pay because the band shuffled in and just "did their thing". We're all in this thing together, whether you like to dive with your cut off shirts and shirts and think I am wigger for being in a gang and ninjakickin people when I like a song. We all took our time and money and place ourselves in the same room. Does this mean that I want everyone to start a fucking circle jerk? No, I am just saying the connection to the core is so vastly different for so many people over the stretch of the past few years that I don't see as many bands kickin' it unless they were already friends, or going out of their way because they know what its like to be in a band too. At This Is Hardcore I watched John Joseph (BloodClot) and Mike Score (All Out War) stand and watch the guys in Have Heart tear the place apart and then go into the back room and tell Agnostic Front about it. I saw two Philadelphia bands that never played together before close out one of the best shows, let alone weekends I've ever been to. I can't tell you how great I feel about the core when I witness the dudes from RingWorm watching ColdWorld or Righteous Jams.

It reminds of the things I mentioned above. Regardless of what you wear, where you're from or what you're doing in your own life when you walk through the doors for a show, as a band, as a kid or the promoter the floor is level. We're all fuckin here, we all chose this shit to ruin our eardrums and get our aggressions out. This is my motivation for another This Is Hardcore Fest. More then ever I watch as bands categorically rise with the trends and alienate one or more crowds as their success blossoms, as one crowd moves from one band, they join another band's bandwagon. I've grown tired of reading the message boards with the public praise for the smallest of bands from the shittiest scenes that never put out more then a few good songs get treated like the next Hardcore Jesus.

Our world as a whole has grown larger and yet so smaller with the availability and access the internet gives us to old music that we all find our mp3 collections growing at such a rapid rate that the strength of the music, the emotional excitement of a "find" becomes more and more necessary to feed the habit and the overall impact these bands are making is weakened altogether. Sure more people are noticing more smaller lesser known bands but in a week they will have gone onto something else. Welcome to the ADHD generation as they say… Or it could be that since we're just experiencing these bands over the Internet through a computer that the feeling of being there at that moment will never come to you. So you may be excited as hell about the addition of Starkweather's The CrossBearer but soon after you've posted on every board about the greatness of the band you realize there is no time machine, that moment on that cd was then and will not be now you have to move on to the next great thing or something that someone mentioned in regards to that band. We're growing in our knowledge of these bands but our experiences are becoming more akin to the need/greed instead of the pleasing revelation of showing up to a show to see a new band. Can't do that, can't watch a band you don't know or possibly didn't like their myspace tunes. Instead you'll sit at home gripe about the downfall of hardcore and download hundreds of songs in a night to truly only feel the impact of a handful of songs.

So many great bands are OUT NOW. They're screaming, sweating and bleeding for you and you're minds have grown closed in your ability to have immediate knowledge of most things past and near present. Fuck even "future" is achievable with the invention of "leaked" CDs. The concept of going to see 5 bands and watching all 5 is an antique model for a world that is no longer around. These kids know what they want and know it so well that they're programmed to rarely check something in person out, which is ironically so contradictive of their online life. And when we get down to it, not everyone goes to shows every single day so the argument that I am making is that the average hardcore kid spends more time online then at shows per week, thus creating the deviation from the old way of things which was to "check bands out live". People are influenced and pay too much lip service to what they read online and never make a true evaluation for themselves in person. I've found out how many times a band's myspace song or EP sucks only to fall in love with the band live. I've tried many a time to really enjoy Modern Life Is War records and it just falls on deaf ears to me but live they are so engaging and alive that I can't help but enjoy them. Had I left my first judgment on their CD material, as the end all be all of what I think of them I would never realize how much I enjoy their band live. I am sure as people will read this that they will argue and make exceptions and excuses for themselves but the truth hurts and everyone always try to argue their way out of a bum rap.

The world of ours is opening up and yet the minds that drive it are closing on preconceived notions of their own good sense of judgment that I've proven to be maligned solely by Internet interactions with our world. This thing we do is alive. Its never something that can be with someone who's never been to a show but downloaded everything from the bad brains to the new mongoloids in 6 months but went to 3 shows in that time. The power our world has over other music scenes is in the live show, its intensity, its collective agreement to accept the violent dancing and diving as "part of the show". When we like a song we punch our friends, when we know a lyric we take the mic from the singer who wrote the song. These are not things someone would dare to do outside of our world. I know this is wishy washy idealistic stuff but god help me if I want to give kids one weekend of all of this greatness that has truly kept my life moving forward. Have them get sweaty and wish the band would play their favorite song so they can move. I want the kids from California to ask the kids from New Jersey where the best place to eat downtown is. I want the kids to see their favorite bands, spend their times rifling through record bins at the distros looking through for that LP they couldn't find anywhere.

I want people to live this thing that we've come to spend our time, money and LOVE on. If I can get you people off of your asses, away from your computer screens (even you weirdo sidekick dudes that love to stand on the floor looking at it like you're unimpressed by what's going on around you) and have you make one life connection to this, one truly amazing moment that you will be able to relive in full detail 1,5 or 10 years from now it was worth it.

I am not a talented guy; I rely on the availability and the willingness of the bands to make the shows work. I am lucky that the current crop of hardcore bands have more heart then any I can recall in the past 15 years. They have more of a sense of togetherness and they're all so god damn good live it hurts to not have a band on the bill that made an impact the last 2 years. It's these guys that deserve it the most. They leave their lives, their aspirations aren't to become our doctors and lawyers, they want to fill the back of a van with equipment and ride into the night heading to a town they've never been to and shred the place apart. They want to get on stage and have some kid from ½ way around the world take the mic sing the words and do a flip when he's done. They've signed their souls away to make the world of ours continue to go around and if we can all really come together again for one more weekend and let go and just fucking enjoy ourselves the way it was truly meant to be it will all be worth it…

THIS IS HARDCORE 2008.
