KFXZ (Z105.9) Lafayette, La.
z105.9 “Oh wow” songs were in ample supply yesterday morning at Pittman Broadcasting’s Urban AC KFXZ (Z105.9) Lafayette, La., which bills itself as “Louisiana’s Home for Southern Soul, Swing Out, Zydeco, and R&B.” Acadiana has always been a reliable market for unique radio. Top 40 KSMB can be counted on for at least one or two unusual zydeco crossovers (e.g., Horace Trahan’s “That Butt Thing”) or other novelties (“The Cupid Shuffle,” Choppa’s “Mardi Gras Wobble”) every year. And KFXZ, which was up 1.2 – 6.2 in the just released spring Arbitron, has a very specific sense of place, although its success is encouraging to those who are waiting for Southern Soul to show up in a larger market outside the deep south. It was “Swing Out Wednesday” on KFXZ yesterday, meaning that a handful of songs on the monitor below were mid-to-uptempo dance songs tied to the “swing out” dance scene – more uptempo than the “steppers cuts” that Chicago made famous, but similarly light and breezy. Here’s Z105.9 at 9 a.m. yesterday morning under PD/midday host Carl T.:
