GAY.COM - Joshua J's Guide to SF Category: Parties and Nightlife
The S.F. club guru chats about a few of his favorite places, events and things. Even the old cigarette rule doesn't speed your next cab in S.F. Name: Joshua J Age: 29 Profession: Club Promoter / Disc Jockey City: San Francisco aka Man Fran-disco Sexuality: Horny Homo
What are some of the things you love most about San Francisco?
It is the perfect mix of city meets earth. There is a major nightlife scene and a major green scene. Not too much of either, just enough to keep us all in check.
What are some of your least favorite things about San Francisco?
The 2a.m. last call. We are a major international city, so we should act that way. Last call should be pushed back to 4a.m. if not 24 hours. I also don't think we have enough taxis. I spend too much time trying to hail a cab or waiting on hold with Yellow and Luxor trying to get someone to pick me up.
Joshua isn't jerking your chain: 24-Hour Van Ness offers some of the best masturbatory material.
What gym do you like most in San Francisco? Why?
24-Hour on Market and 24-Hour on Van Ness. The gay one on Market is a great place to socialize during your sweaty workout -- to find out what is going on for the night and where all the cute fags will be. The 24 on Van Ness is great to actually get a serious workout in, but still have plenty of eye candy to cruise and jack off to after your workout.
What are some great restaurants for a night out with gay friends in San Francisco?
I am always up for trying some place new that people are talking about to see what all the hype is about. NOPA is a favorite, perfect for late dining, which is what I prefer. The food is always stellar, the cocktails are tasty, and the service is sweet and unpretentious -- A+.
If I am out with my ultra gay friends that can only handle gay dining, I do enjoy Eureka on 18th in the Castro. I like to eat upstairs in the bar/lounge. They make a mean martini and the menu is meat heavy and never overcooked. They should be open later though; it always seems they are trying to rush us out after they drop the food. Boo.
What are some great restaurants for a romantic gay date in San Francisco? What about these restaurants appeals to you?
Hmmm... If I am going on an actual gay date, the last place I want to go is the Castro. Going on a date in the Castro guarantees that you will run into an old boyfriend, trick, or fag hag that will most likely interrupt your date and ruin your chances of sex. If I am really down for a boy, I will take them to a small spot out of the Castro, such as Ryoko's Sushi near Union Square. They are open late, have a full bar, make gorgeous sushi, have fun servers, and on the weekends they have DJs that spin downbeat ultra lounge sounds that pair perfectly with the underground atmosphere.
What are your favorite gay bars and/or dance clubs in San Francisco? What do you like about them?
My favorite gay bar in S.F. is, for sure, the Bar on Castro (BOC). I have been going there since I first moved to S.F. and it feels like a second home to me. The staff is awesome and always down to do a shot with me. The music changes nightly, but it's always quality. The crowd on the weekends can be a little too bridge and tunnel and severely straight for me. The weekday nights are when the real fun happens for the locals, especially Booty Call Wednesdays and Ladies Night Tuesdays.
What are your favorite gay parties or events in San Francisco, if any? What is the crowd or scene like at those places?
I tend to party hop. I like to go to as many venues or parties I can in one night. Some regulars and favorites... Trannyshack (Tuesdays at The Stud), Tubesteak Connection (Thursdays at Aunt Charlie's), and Cassettes (Thursdays at the Matador). I also love Peaches Christ's Midnight Mass movie seasons at the Bridge Theatre.
Where is the best public place for a gay person to make out in San Francisco?
Anywhere really, it's San Francisco... the gays run this city. Seriously though, I am not a major fan of p.d.a. A little smooch is cool, but unnecessary tongue and slobber on the sidewalk is lame.
What is the gay community like in San Francisco? Do you consider yourself to be part of any particular "scene"?
The gay community here is so diverse. There are the Castro twinky dinks, the Mission hipster homos, the Upper Market a-gays, the Tender Nob trannies, and the whole lezzie and ftm mob. Though all the cliques are totally different, they all seem to intermingle to make gay life here magical. If I were to be part of a scene, it would be the nightlife scene- all the promoters, djs, drag queens, club kids, go go dancers, bartenders, and people that make night life happen so that the queers have a place to party.
Juanita MORE! and I put together a mean electro-disco party every Wednesday at the BOC called Booty Call. The crowd is totally cute, young, fashionable gays that are there to drink heavily, sweat it out on the dance floor, and find that mid week trick. A lot of love connections have been made at Booty Call.
Are you involved with any LGBT community organizations in San Francisco? Which ones? What do you like about those groups?
I have been involved with many LGBT groups. One of my favorites is LYRIC, which offers recourses to queer youth.
Find a Big Top, Pride weekend. What do you think of the annual LGBT pride celebration in San Francisco? Do you usually attend? What are the highlights for you? What do you like least about it?
I love S.F. Pride. That is when this city gets nutty. I am usually working on some event for Pride, and I have been in the parade a couple of times. It was fun, but too early for me. My favorite thing about Pride is getting together with Juanita MORE! and the rest of the House of MORE!, and getting in costume and walking the Civic Center party before heading over to Juanita's annual pool party at the Phoenix Hotel.
This year I am extra excited as I am (with Fag Fridays, Beatbox events, and FSLD) throwing "Mr." on Friday June 27th at club Mighty. It is the "official gay pride kick off party" and it ensures to be insane.
Then on Sunday June 29th it's Big Top at The Transfer, my monthly homo disco circus party. It is the "official after party for Juanita's pool party". Heklina will be my special guest hostess, and she and Rayza Burn will be MCing the 'best butt munch contest' at midnight.
Do you have a particular fashion style? Where do you shop for clothes?
I prefer to wear my friends designs...Mr. David Couture, House of Horseface, and Juanita MORE!
Where do you go for other forms of entertainment -- live theater, concerts, movies, art exhibits? Are there any local gay performance groups, bands, or artists that you're a fan of?
I love all forms of art. Right now I am really fond of the uncomfortable art of Jonathan Solo.
If you had gay friends visiting from out of town for the first time, what are some "musts" that you'd recommend they see or do?
There are so many fabulous gay events happening in this city, it would just depend on what night they were here.
What city (or cities) in America would you most like to visit next, and why? Are there any specific spots there (theaters, nightclubs, historic sites, etc.) that you'd really like to see?
I am going to L.A. for pride. I hear that the nightlife scene there is finally stepping up.
