Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Commissions DJ Promote to Create and Offer Free, Christmas Hip Hop EP

While Yuletide-themed hip hop isn’t exactly a new concept (Kurtis Blow was “Christmas Rappin’” back in 1979), it often catches listeners by surprise. So when you take that recipe and add in sermon samples from and the full endorsement of “Greatest Living American” and beloved evangelist Billy Graham, expect to see more than a few raised eyebrows.

That’s exactly what can be anticipated now that Lights Up, Eyes On, a 5-track EP by DJ Promote commissioned by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, is available to the masses.

“I was so honored to be asked to create this project,” Promote said. “I mean, he’s like an icon. To take that timeless message he has and reinvent that in a way where people can hear it all over again is just awesome!”

Listeners can digitally download Lights Up, Eyes On for free at www.ransom.tv – a new viral media website created by the BGEA. DJ Promote crafted the beats for four of the five tracks and then invited several artist friends to add to the music.

The sound ranges from street rap to classic hip hop, electronica, and acoustic pop. Lyrics were penned by Verbs, Moses Uvere, AntBanx, and Kellen Bowhay. Swiftstyle, Dustin Cavasos, and Othello also contributed to the effort.

Several songs include audio clips from both Billy Graham and his wife Ruth encouraging the audience to reject a commercialized Christmas and embrace the birth of Jesus the Messiah as the true meaning of these holy days.

“[Graham’s] words are still relevant and that’s because the message is foundational. It didn’t change throughout the years. The whole time it was just about Jesus and the hope he brings to this broken world,” Promote said.

Promote is no stranger to the BGEA, having previously appeared in their “Bridge to Life” video as both a DJ and graffiti writer. He’s also well known on the touring circuit and has manned turntables for nationally known artists like Verbs, B.Reith, and Propaganda.

Current mood:  energetic
I have recently become the owner of two new (well actually used... but new to me) "leopards". That's right, I said LEOPARDS!!! I know what you're thinking,"They'll kill him... Where will he keep those things! Leopards!?!?!". Yes I know you're worried but it's true, I have two new (used) leopards in my home. Let me explain.

The first leopard I got while I was on tour. A drummer from the band "This Beautiful Republic" (an AWESOME band Im in love with now) was selling one. He had only owned it for about 6 months I think and had bought another similar breed so he was selling this one. For those of you who might not know, I had been wanting one of these for over a year now, especially when I found out they came in smaller sizes. A week before I left on tour I actually went to the store and tried to buy one but I didn't have enough money, so this deal was off, until now. I told him to wait for a day and I would pray about it and the following day, I went for it!!! It came with its original box was practically brand new! No scratches nothing... flawless.

So wait before I show you this thing, let me tell you about my next purchase. This one was actually FREE. Yeap FREE!!! Again, while I was on tour, my wife calls me. She says that this weird animal is outside our house crying and stuff. She opened the door and it came in and she shoved it out with a broom. She was all freaked out! See we live out by a lake so there are alot of wild animals always runnin around. Well, she left to work and then came back home for lunch. After she came inside she heard it again! She went out the back door this time and snuck up on it and sure enough it was a leopard! She let it in our house and called her mom over to check it out. It didnt tear anything up or do anything crazy. Her mom finally got brave and picked it up only to find out that it had been DECLAWED in the front and NEUTERED. Crazy right... well that pretty much meant it had a previous owner or something. She ended up keeping it overnight in our home and then waited a few weeks to see if anyone said they lost this thing or it escaped from somewhere. By the time I got back we still hadnt heard anything yet so we took it to the vet and sure enough they said it was a leopard! Well really they said it was an Asian Leopard mixed with a domesticated house cat... or a Bengal!!!

So check out both of my new, previously owned, LEOPARDS!!!

A new 13' Unibody MacBook with Leopard Operating System X installed and my free Bengal Asian Leopard house cat! Cool huh? That's right two new (previously owned) Leopards in my home as we speak. I know, I know, I led you on... but I couldn't resist!

I've always wanted a MacBook and thanks to my new buddy Cameron I got one. The Bengal is a "wish list item" as well. A few years ago we went to a friends house and we drooled all day over his Bengal house cat. It was soo beautiful but I couldnt afford the $1000 price tag. So for it to just show up at my house is crazy. We think someone might have let it go out in the wild since we live far out and we have alot of military people moving in and out our neighborhood when they get called for duty. Either way we havent seen any newspaper ad's or lost cat posters so I guess he's officially ours.

The only thing left do now is name them... I usually name my computers (yea Im a geek!) and I think I have a name for the cat. They are both "he's" so I think I will name the MacBook "Kitty Kitty" and the cat "OSX" (pronounced: OhhEsssTin). I mean hey why not?

Dj Promote

creating an atmosphere...

Somewhere in West Texas, one humble man with a set of turntables is on a mission. He’s Dj Promote, ready to make the party come alive. With every beat and every mix, he is making more than a song… he’s creating an atmosphere.

In spite of his small town upbringing, Dj Promote always knew he had a love and a gift for music. His biggest exposure came through the radio that played mostly pop hits. However, as a child of the ‘80s, he literally grew up with hip-hop, and break dancing amongst friends was common. Still, the bass-heavy jams of his youth hadn’t caught on in his neighborhood just yet.

“I danced for a long time, because I didn’t have a way to express my love for music. I didn’t have an opportunity to be around djs or rappers. I was in the school band for a little while, I took up drawing and did graphic arts,” Dj Promote says. “If there was a hip-hop culture in my town at that time, it was hidden. There were a few guys break dancing and doing graffiti art, but you wouldn’t have known about it. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I heard about people doing it.”

The art of being a dj was almost as young as he was, but even before he knew what a dj was, he was developing a raw talent for the profession. He says, “As a kid, I was djing in my head. I would always be thinking about what the next song should be. I didn’t know that you could do that for real.”

Dj Promote made friends with similar interests, and after high school, he finally got the opportunity to jump head first into the scene. “I started hanging out in big cities like Dallas, Austin and San Antonio,” he recalls. “We would hit the clubs mostly for the music. We just wanted to hear the djs.”

By his early 20s, Dj Promote was entrenched in the hip-hop scene. He was djing parties, youth events and any place that he could. It was just as he’d always dreamed of. However, something was still missing.

It started when Dj Promote returned back to his small town one year to find that his family had started going to church. “I could tell they were different. There wasn’t as much arguing. It was calmer. I didn’t understand everything at the time, but I remember thinking, ‘Whatever they have, I want.”

It would still be a couple of years before he would make a commitment to Christ. He still went to club, but the lifestyle was starting to wear on him.  One Sunday morning, he found himself wanting to go up to the altar, but he was hesitant. A older man in his church asked him what he was waiting for, adding, “If you think it’s right, then you just do it.”

Later that night, he went to see Stigmata, a controversial film that dealt strongly with spiritual issues. “It was a strange movie to make me think about being a Christian, but that’s how it happened,” Dj Promote says. “It was the first time that I had the revelation that there is something bigger than me and there’s more than just what is going on in my life. It hit me. I turned to one of my friends and said I’m ready.”

After accepting Christ, Dj Promote turned his passion into a vehicle of soul expression. He started mixing notable Christian hip-hop artists of the time by raiding the Family Christian Bookstore music rack. He created websites, did break dancing events and eventually became a fixture in the scene. Traveling across the globe, he has djed for many artists, including scratching on a remix for Shirley Caesar. However, his biggest accomplishment was mixing for a youth culture video produced by the Billy Graham Association called Bridge to Life. “I did both graffiti and djing,” he says. “Here I am, and the only reason I’m here is that this one man went and put in all this work for all these years. I knew that I was part of something that was beyond me. It’s amazing and it relays the gospel. Anything like that is cool.”

Today, he has more projects under his belt including Syntax Records’ Wages of Syntax volume 2 and the label’s compilation series, Night Owls, on which Dj Promote mixed for volumes three, four and five.

In spite of his success, he considers himself a latecomer to the game with room for improvement. “It’s all about learning and never thinking that you’ve got it down.”

In a town of just 100,000, one man with a set of turntables who is making a difference. To him, it’s more than just a profession. “I play all kinds of stuff, but I want to put a message in it. I want to create an environment and give joy where there is no joy.”
And how does this talented dj keep himself grounded? He is constant remembrance that it’s not about him.

“I keep looking back at all the things that God has done. God has taken me through all those steps to make music and have fun. For me it’s about getting people excited and then how can I turn this excitement into something that will impact forever. I want it to show that God is real. My job is just to be creative so God can work.”

Hey Everyone,
Some fun news, I got invited to be apart of a recording and writing process with a friend of mine Joby Harris who grew up in Pittsburgh who's a devote Steelers fan. So I added my vocal and DJ cuts to it and we submitted it to the NFL and Steelers org to see if they would pick it up as their theme song. Well, this last week it got radio play in Pittsburgh @ 5 pm peak traffic time. So we shall see, I don't know about you all, or if you even care but I'm going to the Steelers this year for the super bowl, who know you may hear our song on national TV!!!

Syntax Records recently put out a song around the We Three Kings concept (the three wise men taking gifts to "baby Jesus"). You can find this at ILLSPOT.NET... very dope song featuring Red Cloud, Kaboose, Jeremiah Bonds and Dj Promote. Its on the release titled Rap Fest Presents. I did the cuts at the end of the song.

After I finished the scratching for the track I really fell in love with the sample record I was using for We Three Kings. It's an old We Three Kings Christmas record. Soooo... I created a Three Kings Composition of my own and Im offering it to you for FREE DOWNLOAD...

The tracks is called WE THREE KINGS (GLORIOUS GIFTS REMIX)

I feel just like the wise men who brought gifts to this new born king we can bring our gifts to Him. Even things like djing I see as a Glorious Gift to give back to The Lord.
