Help protect and save bears

Bears were once common throughout many parts of the world but today, all eight species of bear are under threat – mainly from human activities.
Conflicts and exploitation by humans has reduced the numbers and distribution of many species by more than 50% over the last 100 years.

What WSPA is doing to help:

The WSPA campaigns and provides practical support to bears that are, or have been:
Used in cruel bear dancing shows
Caught from the wild for zoos and circuses
Killed for their fur, meat, gall bladders and paws
    Farmed for their bile
    Used in bear baiting ‘shows’

Europe: WSPA is working with a local group in Romania to build a bear sanctuary – the largest in Europe. The sanctuary currently houses 27 bears and has a list of identified bears for rescue from illegal roadside attractions, as well official zoos scheduled for closure because of poor animal welfare standards.

Asia: Bear bile is extracted for medicinal use either by killing the bear, or keeping it in an extremely small cage and regularly extracting the bile directly from its gall bladder. WSPA investigations have shown that bear bile farmed in China is sold illegally abroad in many countries in Asia and the West. The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), joined together with Wildlife DNA Services, a specialist wildlife forensics organization, to develop an on-the-spot test for bear products.

India: WSPA is working with local groups on a dancing bear eradication project and has significantly reduced bear baiting in Pakistan. Thanks to continued co-operation with the authorities, WSPA aims to stop bear baiting in Pakistan for good.

Sanctuaries: The WSPA also provides funding for bear sanctuaries in Hungary, USA, Greece, Turkey, Thailand, India, Pakistan and Laos.

Past achievements include:

WSPA completely eradicated use of dancing bears in Greece and Turkey, helping governments to confiscate bears and re-home them in safe, forested sancturary enclosures.
Successful set up and funding of bear sanctuaries worldwide
In 2004, a UK-based charity, WSPA worked with a specialist wildlife forensics organization to develop a test for bear products. The kit is currently being successfully tested by Australian and Canadian authorities.
WSPA’s first investigation in Pakistan, in 1993 found evidence of 80 different contests involving 300 bears. But now, as a result of WSPA’s continued efforts, bear baiting has reduced significantly.
