From The Economist's Bonnaroo coverage:

"But for four days each June the town becomes Bonnaroo, recently named by Rolling Stone as the best music festival in America. This year, more than 75,000 people camped on hundreds of acres of pastureland and battled deep mud and intense heat to enjoy music ranging from the Beastie Boys to up-and-comers such as the American Princes."
Apparently they're focusing one of the few economies that did well this quarter: that of Manchester, TN. AP name check bonus!!!

On Thursday June 11 American Princes played mid-thunderstorm at a Bonnaroo evening party with Janelle Monae and Chairlift.  The folks at Rolling Stone had some cameras there to capture the performance, and you can check it out over at their site.

There are photos, videos, and, soon, an interview with Collins will be up in the Podcasts section.  To watch the Princes play click on the "exclusive videos" button and scroll down.  You'll see videos of some Other People favorites (Real Love, Born To Die, Son of California), as well as our updated live version of Annie from our previous album Less and Less.

(We also highly recommend that you check out Janelle Monae's performance of Smile.  Man, that girl's got it).

In what may be one of our most memorable shows yet, Collins and I are going to play JFK airport. Jet Blue is kicking off the opening of its new terminal with a series of concerts through November 25th.  What has four thumbs, two acoustic guitars, and a bevy of songs to unleash this Friday???  Dave and Collins!

If you want to check out a mention in, oh, I don't know, The New York Times (!!!!!!!!), the program is described here.

The catch: it's all happening inside security, so unless you're flying, you're not going to hear our dulcet tones.  The counter-catch: we'll be keeping you updated on concert happenings via Twitter, as well as a post-show recap right here, so stay tuned.  We'll let you know how JFK's green room is.

xo,
David

American Princes are preparing for another extended stay in NYC this month upcoming--very apropos after getting love from both Brooklyn Vegan and The New York Times last week.  Thus, we have three excellent shows we're excited to announce.

First, on Tuesday July 14th we'll return to our favorite venue at which to play early in Manhattan: The Mercury Lounge.  We'll be going on at 7pm, so I hope you will all be there to drink on an empty stomach.  Dinner can wait.  As Dave often says, we make good apps.

Don't worry Brooklyn. Even though we've made a couple of trips to the city recently and neglected your borough, that business is Collins' home.  So, we couldn't come back yet again without playing in the lion's den: Williamsburg.  On Friday July 17th we'll be appearing at Union Pool (the den of dens?).  And, we're very excited to be playing there with our good friends--an excellent band--The Weight.  Lemme tell y'all, we go way back.

Finally, on Tuesday July 28th we'll be back at the best little room in the Lower East Side: Pianos. We'll go on there at 10PM sharp, and, as always, there will be hang time afterwards at the upstairs lounge.  Yes, that does mean we will once again try to consume all the brown stuff in the bar.  Therefore, we need your help, lest we want to be giving Matt a cab ride to the hospital again.  We're kidding, of course.  Matt could out-drink David Lee Roth.  But if he did happen to need hospitalization, there's a chance Diamond Dave would be the ambulance driver.  We know you know what we're talking about.  Point is, don't miss it.

Here's an inaugural, catch-you-up-to-our-latest-shenanigans Bonnaroo post.  In brief: the shows have completely rocked so far.  Rolling Stone called us a quartet from Lexington, KY and David's dad said that this was "off the hizzle" (text to follow).  Matt hung out with John Oliver and Rob Riggle from The Daily Show (picture to follow).  Collins went backstage with Phoenix and Public Enemy (intra-band acrimony to follow).  Will donned a pith helmet (adventure to follow).  Luke did an astounding hippie dance in between the Beastie Boys and Phish, only to be caught, mid-dance, by a dude who couldn't stop telling him what a sweet band he had (narration to follow).  All told, this has been an incredible weekend.  You guys are in for some treats as soon as we gather our wits about us.

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who showed up to our all '90s cover night on Saturday. We had an incredible time and we hope you all did too. For those of you who want to relive the experience in your minds, here's the setlist we played (we, however, are ready to forget about these for a while):

No Excuses - Alice in Chains
Do The Vampire - Superdrag

Lump - Presidents of the United States of America
All I Want - Toad The Wet Sprocket
Tom Courtenay - Yo La Tengo
Harnessed In Slums - Archers Of Loaf
Big Me - Foo Fighters
In Circles - Sunny Day Real Estate
Round Here - Counting Crows

Set 2:

1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
On A Rope - Rocket From The Crypt

Yes there are some unflattering songs... yes there are some blasphemous ones.  Yes, ASCAP will be clamoring for their dues.  But it was all worth it.  For those of you who missed out, here's a little sample courtesy of The Arkansas Times (yes, David is wearing a Balzac Ty-Vek jacket and matching hat):

Tomorrow night (Friday, 5/22/2009) at 7:45 PM, we hit the stage at Riverfest.  Specifically, we hit the Triple-S Alarm Stage in North Little Rock.  We're guessing those three esses stand for: Sweetness, Sweetness, and Some More Sweetness.

And yes, we'll be playing right before legendary father-of-Gwen-Stefani's-child(ren?) GAVIN ROSSDALE!!!  We've seen his promo shots and believe us when we say: he is every bit as dreamy these days as he was when Bill Clinton was in office.  Get ready to swoon.

And that, my friends, is how to spend a Friday evening.

Current mood:  knighted
Hello, my friends.  After about six weeks in the North East the Princes are coming home.  Things we've learned:

1) One steamed pork bun (one dollar, retail) will fill the stomach for a full six hours.

2) The two greatest human beings to have most recently entered the world are (in no particular order) Lesley (Will, I hope I spelled that right) Noland and Oliver Matthew Steinman.  The "Matthew" may or may not but is definitely referring to our drummer.

3) The 90's night that we are playing at the Rev Room will be the can't-miss, fun-tacular event of the summer (or at least of that night).

4) The High Dive definitely has the best Jukebox in Manhattan.

5) The Air Force One stunt over lower Manhattan was one of the most ridiculous things we've ever witnessed in NY (this includes the numerous times we've seen people shit on the subway, the PAIR of siamese twins we hung out with at Enids, and the time Slade killed those two CIA guys on the 2 train with his paper cone from Pomme Frites.  BTW, way to go Dave!)

6) Swine Flu will be added to the OED next year.

7) Though we're leaving you, NYC, we will miss you dearly.  Be back soon.

Love,
APs

The Boston Phoenix along with Jim Beam is presenting a free* show with American Princes and New Orleans' Galactic on next Wednesday, May 6th at Paradise Rock Club in Boston.  This is pretty exciting for us as we love both newspapers and bourbon (we used to love tea parties as well, but someone had to go and ruin that for a while). And it should excite you, too, because if you drink too much and pass out on the way home you can just use those promotional copies of the Phoenix for some pretty comfy street bedding.

* The Catch: you have to sign up here to RSVP.  Unlike other RSVP events, however, we think this isn't just a first-come-first-serve kind of event.  Our understanding is that tickets will be distributed by a sort of lottery. The order in which you sign up may have some kind of influence on the result.  Honestly, we aren't a hundred percent sure what the details are with the ticket giveaway procedure.  But we do know that Galactic brings out the throngs.  So if you want to catch American Princes for free in a whiskey-soaked environment then your only chance is to sign up for tickets asap.  Doors are at 7.  We will play at 8. Bring it.
