JADE DAY TO RELEASE OF WAKING…. MAY 1st
Austin, TX - - Back from two national tours in support of his last album, Jade Day is set to release his newest work, Of Waking… May 1st – an album that is undeniable evidence of an artist evolved. Throwing off the trappings of youth, Jade steps forward with a collection of 10 new songs bent on breaking boyish idealism. Moving melodies and smart song-craft expose Jade's latest work to be that rare combination of innovation and musical maturity.
Returning to the virtues of acoustic music, Of Waking… emphasizes the direct relationship between voice and guitar. Jade's greatest asset - his distinctive dynamic tenor – is out front and center on this lighter, more concise album. Produced and engineered by Stephen Orsak (Suzanna Choffel), the album is both sparse and ornate at times, utilizing folk and chamber instruments such as mandolin, glockenspiel, double bass, and strings to create a timeless sound.
Thematically, Jade explains, "this album is about the process of enlightenment that we (may) experience over time…the letting go of youthful ideas of what life and love should be in favor of a broader understanding." The first single, "Switchboard Fantasy," takes a more playful approach, grappling with the timeless drama with lyrics like, "…and we run- circles around the sun- circles around the ones we love." In a literal sense, the title also refers to Jade's songwriting process: a carefully kept morning ritual where musings stream from pure woken consciousness.
Players include mainstay percussionist, Wayne Duncan, adding some rhythmic witchcraft and bassist John Thomasson (David Garza, Matt Nathanson) offering upright expertise. Guests include percussionist Phil Bass (Monte Montgomery), Rob Greenfield on piano, Suzanna Choffel on backing vocals, and a special guest appearance by violinist Jamie Desautels (David Byrne) who offers a stirring string arrangement on "Bow to Reason."
A Colorado native, Jade Day is currently based in Austin while continuing to make a name for himself nationally. He has released three albums to date and continues to forge the independent road to success. His music has been praised in the Rock, Singer-Songwriter, Folk, and now Pop arenas, and his remarkable voice and songwriting appeal to an ever-widening audience.
Dates will be announced soon for special release shows in Austin and Jade's other fan-based areas of Denver and New York City. Of Waking… will be available locally at Waterloo Records and End of an Ear Records, online at www.cdbaby.com/cd/jadeday2 , and for download at all major digital retailers. Current mood: optimistic
Category: Music
I've never been optimistic about songwriting contests, but i'm pleased to say that my song "Leaving", an old fan-favorite, has advanced to the next round of judging in the 2006 International Songwriting Competition. I think it might be simple enough to stand a chance! wish it luck-

So, I recently realized that I haven't made much mention of my current recording project. If anyone has wondered why I've dropped off the planet again, one of the reasons is that I'm recording a new album, to be titled "Of Waking...". Stephen Orsak signed on to engineer an co-produce and the experience thus far has been tremendously pleasant. This is more of a solo/acoustic-based album- not to say that there won't be some drums and bass. We're getting great help from Wayne and John on that end. But this time around, I wanted to make a record that conveyed the songs more than the players- something that I could tour behind as a solo act. Also, it's a chance to pair a couple old favorites that never made it onto tape with some fresh innovations that are virgin to the stage. Lastly, it's a small nod to the likes Nick Drake and Andrew bird. Anyway, I should be able to rap things up by the beginning of 07. So, anticipate CD releases in Austin, Denver, and New York in the Spring. Plus some dates on the West Coast this summer. til then...

On Saturday, i picked up a last-minute show at Flipnotics (probably Austin's coolest little coffee shop listening room). Thanks to the myspace and email miracles, a few people actually showed up and made the evening pleasant and even reciprocal.
As i started into the last song of an hour set, a couple walked in and stood in the back listening. When i finished the song "Leaving", i said thank you's and started packing up my things to leave, the time being about midnight.
The man in the back said something like "oh, tell me you're not finished". I said that i was. He came back with "how 'bout an encore?" There was something familiar about his voice, and when i fixed my eyes on the shadowey figure across the darkened room, i thought "is that Gary Shandling?".
Concluding that it most likely was not, i said "i've really got to use the restroom", which was in no part fiction. I told him he should come out to hear me with my band at Momo's some Thursday or sign the email list and finished packing up my things.
Then he asked how much CDs were. I said $10. He asked if there was a discount for buying two. I said no. He (and the woman he was with) then came closer and he pulled out a big, crumpled up wad of bills that filled both hands and sorted it for the next couple minutes, finally pulling out and straightening a twenty and exchanging it for the CDs. I said thanks and they walked out. but not without him proclaming "No encore, No discount- i guess that's a good deal, i guess that's a good deal."
As the door closed behind them, just about every one in the room simultaneously said "hey, wasn't that Gary Shandling?"
and apparently it was.
