THE LOVE, LIGHT & MUSIC IS ON...
CAN YOU FEEL IT?
Words from Tommy & Amanda.
Shows like this renew my faith in creativity and taking chances. It also further substantiates Tempa's ability to honor the music that inspires her, give meaning to being an artist today, and give her audience a bang for their buck. It was nice to see so many of her friends and fans out on a Sunday night, but more impressive to me were the number of new comers that attended, stayed, and left raving about it. All night, I was hearing from people (mostly couples) who had 'stumbled' into Lannie's while strolling along the 16th Street Mall from their hotel. "I'm so glad we decided to go for a walk on our last night in Denver" and "What a great suprise!" were among the many complimentary comments I heard from excited visitors. Tempa and the Tantrums have been around for a while entertaining blues fans with classic covers and rockin' originals. To see so many of them (like Jim Primock of Colorado Blues Society) still willing to pay $10 on a Sunday night made me smile. This special Homage To Women of Blues, Gospel and Soul was just that, special. Covering obscure songs by legendary artists and offering a short backstory that gave meaning to it's existence was powerful. It was more a heartfelt thanks to those who inspired many of todays artists and continue to touch audiences everywhere, than a music history lesson. Add to that, her thought to introduce a new artist in today's musical arena who has inspired her as well. Enter Amanda Capper of Remember May whose well chosen original song and performance proved fitting. The thing I love most about Tempa, is the way she honors both the music, and those who love music. I was not quite sure how my part (painting a live portrait of the show) would fit in, but as it turned out, it too, was special. Thank you Tempa.
My eyes watered when you spoke, love and light are beyond appropriate. I have learned, because you have taught. To see, and not just hear, Tempa sing. To feel, and not just watch, Tommy paint. I could have been sitting at home Sunday night. Instead, my life changed. I was at Lannie's watching a leading lady pay tribute to many others, finding it in me to reach deeper, through a raspy throat, and sing for them all. What a night, what an opportunity. Thank you to Tempa, to Samantha, to Billie and Koko and Tina and Bonnie. . . . to Janis. What a summer this will be. . . . . . .
