Education Reform

Carletta D. Washington

Prioritybooks Publications

March 1, 2006

978-0-975-363447

Non-Fiction

4 Stars

America’s Public School system is in disarray.  Administrators are frustrated with increased regulation and focus on testing.  Teachers complain of inappropriate student behavior and lack of parental involvement.  Parents place most of the responsibility on the school and don’t seem to connect with teachers/schools/administrators.  While the children are being lost in a system that points fingers but doesn’t solve the issues.  Education Reform offers a systematic plan to reclaim schools, rejuvenate administrators, encourage teachers and empower parents to make change a reality.

Washington’s comprehensive reform speaks to every segment of the educational process – school, parents, students and community.  Resources for improving education, sample mission and vision statements and fundraising ideas will aid in successful change.  Washington clearly believes that school personnel are vital in the change process.  Education Reform is ground in the African proverb – “it takes a village to raise a child” and this reform involves the entire community.  The addition of success stories of districts that used this reform would make this a 5-star read.  Education Reform should be utilized in every school district across the country and read by everyone that has a stake in the future of America.

Not Guilty of Love

Pat Simmons

Urban Books

September 1, 2009

978-1-6016-29311

Christian Fiction

5 stars

How strong is your faith?  Is God in complete control of your life?  Could you let the love of your life go, if God told you to so?  Well, Hallison did.  She loved Malcolm Jamieson with every inch of her being but after she re-dedicated her life to Christ, God had a different plan.  To say that Malcolm was upset and stunned would be an understatement.  As they went their separate ways, Hallison’s prayers seemed to keep their hearts connected.  Family drama, new death shooting, witchcraft and engagement to another person all work in concert to keep the couple apart.

Simmons seems to have a direct connection with God as the scriptures guide the storyline.  The love, honesty and faith capture the characters changing lives as they grow throughout the story.  The supporting characters – Parke, Cheney, Grandma BB, Lisa and Trey – bring varying dimensions of understanding God and His divine plan for our lives.  Simmons has written her best work with this sequel to Guilty of Love.  The richness of the characters and foundation of the word not only brings the story to life but will encourage you while renewing your faith in God.  This is a Christian fiction work of art.

Sizzling Seduction

Romance

4 ½ stars

The Hightower Honors series is back and Patrick Hightower proves that he can protect, serve and love like no one else.  Patrick is a firefighter that definitely knows how to heat things up.  It has been years since he has opened his heart to love as his ex-wife burned him bad.  He had been able to keep his fire burning by playing the field.  Patrick had everything under control until he met, Aisha, a kindergarten teacher.

Aisha, has had enough of controlling men.  They were a thing of her past and the only male in her life was her son, Dillon. Aisha has made a 160-degree change in her life – earned her teaching degree, established a new home for her son and found her passion – teaching kindergarten.  Aisha wasn’t looking for a man and played hard to get from day one with Patrick.  His persistence in pursuit of her heart and compassion in dealing with Dillon, just may win her over.  That is if her ex-husband doesn’t kill her first.

Bolton brings the heat in Sizzling Seduction.  You can visualize the passion that Patrick has for Aisha through his words and actions.  The character development and intricate storyline will keep you reading to find out how their story ends.  Past lovers, parental love, family drama and domestic violence all have their way in the formation of Patrick and Aisha’s relationship.  Patrick and Aisha exemplify that what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.  Make sure you have time to read this scorching romance as you won’t be able to put it down.

‘Til Debt Do Us Part

Michelle Larks

Urban Books

July 1, 2009

978-1601629944

Christian Fiction

4 stars

Jeff and Nikki entered into marriage on God’s promise and a plan to achieve it.  Their five-year financial plan would pay off debt, establish a savings and prepare them to start a family.  Jeff had some childhood issues that cause him to control the purse strings and overwhelming fear of living in poverty.  While Nikki has been given lots of financial freedom in her past and eventually convinces Jeff to let her pay all the bills for the couple.  Her extracurricular activities may bring them and their finances to an abrupt standstill.  With the spiritual guidance of their pastor, Nikki is able to come to terms with her faults and look forward to the future.  But not before Jeff is forced to revisit his marriage vows…”for richer or for poorer” and make a choice to forgive or not.

Larks has created another thought provoking novel that tackles an issue not usually addressed – addiction to gambling.  The stronghold of addiction is everywhere and it can’t be loosed until you fall humbly before God and seek His forgiveness.  Nikki and Jeff have a bond that may be broken because of lack of communication and issues of trust.  We know that God can make a way out of no way so the faith and love expressed throughout this novel only reconfirms God’s commitment to His people.  The redeeming traits are noted throughout the book without being preachy and overbearing.  ‘Til Debt Do Us Part is an emotional read that is slow in parts and falls short in supporting character development.  Even with this drawback, Larks has produced another treat for Christian Fiction lovers.

7 Steps to Healthy Natural Hair

Michanna Talley

Jazi Gifts

May 7, 2008

978-0615209845

Non-Fiction

4 stars

African American women are starting to embrace their natural hair.  Women are realizing how empowering it is to wash and go.  This reviewer took the journey of natural hair nearly six years ago and sees similarities in my story and Talley’s.  She carefully details how she made the switch from overly processed relaxed hair to healthy natural tresses.  The process of change may be unbearable for some but the long term advantages are indescribable.

7 Steps to Healthy Natural Hair is a step-by-step guide to caring for natural hair.  This book will open your eyes to the process and give you the courage to make the first step to gorgeous hair.  The photos give examples of the various stages of the process and styles that you can fix yourself.  This is a chronicle of Tally’s personal journey, but could be improved by adding a chapter discussing more advantages and disadvantages of promoting/having healthy natural hair.

Sins of the Father
Angela Benson

September 2009
Fiction
5 Stars

Abraham Martin is pushed to come to terms with his past when he reads a letter from his deceased mother. She encourages him to own up to his past and face his demons. After looking at his success, wealth, loving wife (Saralyn) and rebellious son (Isaac) - he has to acknowledge his secret family. With great zeal Abraham jumps at the prospect of welcoming Deborah and Michael into his inner circle.

However, Abraham should have thought about how his public announcement would make his wife feel. Saralyn lived with his indiscretions for the last thirty years but she will not stay silent with a public acknowledgement. Saralyn plots to secure Isaac’s spot as rightful heir of the Martin fortune. Deborah has always dreamed of the day that her father would embrace her and now she is living in the moment. But Michael has other thoughts about the Martin empire and they don’t include joining the leadership team. The other women, Leah, faces her involvement in Abraham’s past and vows to move forward. Will the two families become one or will revenge ruin everything?

Sins of the Father is a powerful story of revenge, betrayal, and forgiveness. Benson uses three dimensional characters to prove that regret, shame and hatred can give way to acceptance, forgiveness and love. The storyline will surprise you while the outcome will increase your faith in God. If you love reading about real life issues, this is a book that will keep you glued to the pages.

Surrender Your Heart

Romance
5 Stars

This is a 2 for 1 treat for romance lovers. Wathington has coupled two short stories in one publication. How Do You Say Goodbye tells the story of Jessica and Alex. There were in love during high school and college but miscommunication separated them. A rendezvous during a party may provide time to talk and heal old wounds. In Surrender, Monique must overcome a broken heart to let Jordan in her life (more than the existing good friend role). Monique’s long hours as a upcoming writer with the paper, dedication to helping her brother through college and coping with a broken heart leave little time for love interest. Then Jordan is severely injured when his home burns to the ground. Will he survive to hear her love confession?

Wathington continues to share her everyday characters and situations with the romance world. Her stories may be short but the character development and romantic ideas keep you wanting more. Surrender Your Heart has a stimulating storyline, easy digital access, and great value. Well done.

Too Much of a Good Thing Ain’t Bad
Clarence Nero
Broadway

Fiction
5 Stars

Johnny and James are back in this sequel to Three Sides to Every Story. Johnny still hasn’t come to full disclosure about his sexuality. James is still the same - flaming and sure of his sexual identity. Enter Sheila successful school administrator looking to heal her heart and find the man of her dreams. Her family thought that man was Johnny and that’s where things start to get tangled up. Their relationship was taking off and Sheila found out about Johnny’s little secret. The drama that follows will keep your eyes riveted to every word and have you guessing about what the next move will be. Kevin is a supporting character that brings everything together and saves the day. The characters that add comic relief and the ultimate in melodrama are Flo, Mookie and Tiffany.

Nero doesn’t disappoint with this sequel. The drama, the relationships and the sexual tension is some of the best written since E. Lynn Harris. Nero is a leader in character development, scene description and suspense. An avid reader could finish this novel in a matter of a few hours as the story will draw you in and won’t let you go until the very end. If you aren’t open to a variety of relationships, then this isn’t the book for you. However, if you love a great story then get in your comfy chair, grab a cool drink and enjoy!

The Graham family has a solid Christian foundation.  Pastor and Audrey married not long after her 1st husband died.  Pastor Graham adopted her son and it wasn’t long before their daughter Francesca (Frankie) was born.  Several years later Rena Jackson moved to town and befriended Frankie.  Frankie and Rena became best friends while their families loved each other.

Situations at home changed Frankie’s attitude which led to a hard life – drugs, sexual abuse, and crime.  This causes her to be in and out of jail.  Rena (the responsible college educated one) always comes to her rescue.  That is until Frankie’s older brother, Stiles, moves back to town.  During one of the many of Frankie’s stints in jail, Rena and Stiles fall in love.  But the circumstances around Frankie and Rena’s friendship would cause old secrets to escape from the once locked closet door.

Lipsey has successfully mastered what others only dream of doing.  She has written about homosexuality, divorce, STD’s, sexual molestation and the stigma of prison.  These topics are carefully and honestly discussed giving scripture basing on how you reap what you sow.  The power of forgiveness, faithfulness and secrets in a family prove that we all have something we can relate to in this world.  This novel is a must read for anyone wanting to see the evidence of God’s grace.

Maxine is a closet freak.  Upon the recommendation of a friend she signs up for Urban Connections, an online hook-up site.  Once she posted a picture of her sexy legs she immediately started getting messages.  The World’s Greatest Lover is the person she communicates with most.  After moving their computer sex to AOL Instant Messenger she realized they worked together.  The undeniable sexual attraction consumed them until the ultimate work place explosion happened.

Barksdale creates a page turning erotic short story with short E-book.  Once you stumble through the 1st few paragraphs and overcome the slight editing issues you will find yourself with the need to lower the air-conditioning.  The sex scenes are steamy while the romance is what fairy tales are made from.  Definitely recommend this for someone looking to feel hot and bothered (in a good way).
