Tryptych has everything a reader looks for in a novel – love, regret, family bonds, love making and plot turning issues.  Ally and Jonathan are married after both survived great tragedy.  Ally had been raped and left pregnant while Jonathan is still coping with the fall out of losing his wife and son in a deadly car accident.  The couple truly loves each other and adores the idea of their blended family.  Jonathan’s daughter just quit medical school is and giving Ally much attitude.  Ally goes out of her way to protect the younger children while providing for their extraordinary home.  Since Ally and Jonathan are both physicians and co-owners in the island clinic, saying their lives are hectic would be an understatement.

Tragedy seems to have a hold on their family.  Tim, Jonathan’s cousin, has recently lost his wife to a battle with cancer, in an attempt to heal his family he relocates to the island.  This didn’t happen to soon, as they would soon be faced with a horrible health crisis – Jonathan has a brain tumor.  As the family copes with the news and deals with the challenges of cancer treatment, the relationships become complicated and boundaries are blurred.

Coakley-Thompson writes from her heart and puts great detail in her storyline.  This unique story has Bahamian culture as the backdrop with death, commitment to love and unbelievable sexual escapades.  The words will draw you into the story and will open your emotional floodgate.  The characters develop throughout the book by adapting to their changing situations.  The extensive descriptions will have you smelling the crisp Bohemian air.  This is a story with a new backdrop, erotic tryst, and amazing ending – a definite MUST READ!

You Gotta Sin To Get Saved

The dynamics of your family have definite influence on how your life will unfold.  In this final installment of an “unexpected trilogy”, Mason untangles a web of family secrets that will heal some, free others and drive someone insane.  Mason skillfully inserts Charlotte’s back story to bring you up to par with the two previous books.  Connie, Reesy, and Cammy’s characters also share their personal thoughts, recollections of the past and expectations of a future of peace.

So where do we begin?  Connie and Reesy were little girls when their mother, Charlotte, left them to fend for themselves.  Both had opposing memories of their mom, which push them in different directions, they end up living totally separate lives.  Always wondering why Charlotte left, Reesy hired a private detective to find her.  Connie didn’t have a desire to find her mom because the wounds of her living cut far too deep.  When the detective finds Charlotte, Reesy can’t wait to reunite with her mom. Enter Cammy, Charlotte’s youngest daughter, who can’t seem to find her way out from her mother’s dark abusive shadow.  The generational dependence on good-for-nothing men is seen throughout the book as the women deal with the truth of their lives.  As the secrets are uncovered their sisterly bond draws them together, makes them stronger and just may save their lives.

Mason has intricately designed a story of motherly betrayal and dependence on a man’s love.  The story follows how four women (Connie, Reesy, Cammy, and Charlotte) move through life following the men that continually let them down.  The strong fortitude and love for each other is what keeps them going.  The characters are well developed, storyline is full of twists and the ending is a shocker.  Mason continues to prove that she has the writer’s gift to capture your attention while making you part of the story.

15-Minute Low Carb Recipes
Dana Carpender
Fair Winds Press

What, meals in 15 minutes?  That’s impossible or so I thought.  It’s the low carb that is freaking me out because I’m carbohydrate junkie.  Not only are there 100’s of recipes in this easy-to-read cookbook.  There are explanations, descriptions of appliances needed, and techniques details and convenience foods.  The ah-huh moments for me were:

Ice cube preservation – spoon left over sauce into ice trays, freeze and use them later

Interesting short cuts – minced garlic in oil, jarred grated gingerroot, crushed pork rinds and tapenade

Little known nutritional facts – phytochemicals in onion, rice protein powder, the power of vinegar and vege-sal.

Carpender proves that low carb doesn’t mean no taste.  The recipes are quick, cost-effective and delicious.  The following recipes get two thumbs up meaning you should eat now and often:
Parmesan Chicken Breasts
Lettuce Wraps
Buttered Salmon with Creole Seasoning
Border Town Chicken Salad
Italian Sausage with Onions and Peppers
Slow Cooker Chicken Guadalupe

There are a few items that instantly yell are you kidding me (because I have crazy childhood memories of eating them in bulk) like 15+ ways to cook cauliflower, multiple ways to fix asparagus and 4 varieties of artichokes.  The menu choices in this cookbook will alter your life.  Cutting the time you spend in the kitchen will allow for more time for family (or to relax in quiet while your family believes you are slaving away in the kitchen).  Carpender thanks for doing the hard work of combining taste and nutritional value into quick low carb recipes.  You’ve made me a new low carb fan.

Rachael is my girl.  But I often question how she keeps all the stuff she needs in her kitchen.  Don’t get me wrong, I know she has a TV kitchen with dozens of assistants but what does she have at the house?  Well, this cookbook answers all of those crazy questions.

Question #1: How do you shop like a super star cook?
Always look at the unit price
Shop when items are on sale and stock up then
Time is money so know your worth
Do a little at a time
Keep everything ready to cook

Question #2: What do you need to keep on hand?
There are certain basics you should keep.  This book provides a cheat sheet in the back of the book.  Things for the spice rack, fridge, freezer, kitchen, wine rack and cabinet.

Question #3: How do the dishes look when plated?
There are only five pages of glossy colorful finished dishes.

Question #4: What do I cook when I’m so sleepy, you can’t think straight?
There are 27 recipes to choose from…that’s nearly an entire month.

Question #5: I’m not real tired but I still don’t know what to do for dinner?
There are over 50 recipes that have some chopping, more steps but low stress.  You can choose from those on these types of nights.

Question #6: I need to prepare something extra special for unexpected guests but I will have in less than an hour and I still need to get showered and dresses.  What do I do?
22 recipes will help you win over the boss’s wife and make a good impression with the in-laws.

Rachael has laid it all out – shopping list, delicious meals and great tidbits then dinners done, all in 30 minutes.  Rachael’s wit and style will make you smile while those yum-o meals will make your belly full.  Finally a cookbook done right!

Twisted Lies
Sophie Jones

Zina and Robert Roman put on a show of the perfect marriage.  Robert has an up and coming computer networking business which means late nights, extravagant dinners and countless hours away from home.  While Zina has an intriguing job in Human Resources but has way too much time on her hands.  In need of a break from the hum drum monotony of daily life, Zina ventures off on an extended weekend alone to clear her head.  Zina takes the time to come to grips with Robert’s roaming eye and her intense loneliness.  Robert (feeling guilty) pulled out all the stops to make sure that Zina enjoys herself in New Orleans – first-class plane ticket, luxury hotel suite, personal driver and VIP tickets to all festival events.  It worked but Zina never realized she would meet someone that would catch her eye and capture a spot in her heart.

Enter the supporting cast – Rayna (Zina’s best friend) and Kendall (Robert’s football buddy).  These two people play important roles in the Roman’s marriage.  Zina and Roman are forced to tell lie after lie to cover up what they don’t want the other to know.  They never realized that they both were in the wrong until it was almost too late.  Their insidious twist of lies builds up to an ending that will take your breath away.

Jones creates a visual picture of deceit with the vivid descriptions, character analysis and situations written.  The storyline builds to an unbelievable frenzy that holds true to the title.  The novel ends with a bunch of questions that hopefully will be addressed in the sequel.  Twisted Lies is everything an avid reader looks for – drama, passion, deceit, steamy sex scenes and heartache.

The Pastor’s Wife Does Cry
Lady Bea Morgan
Priority Books

Lady Bea Morgan prayed for a Godly husband and God revealed Clayton.  Their relationship seemed to be God inspired and within six weeks they were engaged.  Six months into their marriage, his dream was answered as he asked to pastor a prominent Colorado church.  The challenges of work, preaching, teaching a demanding flock, and dealing with a blended family lead to emotional abuse.  Though it all Lady Bea Morgan remains prayerful, she continues to nurture her relationship with God and finds the power of fasting.  She discusses how to deal with close female friends, establishing ministries, embracing a blended family, the power of prayer, fasting and speaking in tongues.  Advice is given to First Ladies, potential minister’s wives and pastors.

The Pastor’s Wife Does Cry is a personal memoir about an abusive relationship.  The book is written in a conversational tone with multiple ideas pulsing throughout.  The story is somewhat fragmented and disjointed leaving one to wonder about the development of the story.  However, the coping mechanisms and descriptions on how she strengthened her relationship with God are definitely worth the read.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13).  In these deeply troubled economic times, we must reconstruct our vision to be financially independent.  Carter has carefully researched the Word of God and uncovered a plan to put every house on a solid foundation.  The plan is clear and deeply rooted in the Word:
1.       Develop a Vision
2.       Set up some Goals
3.       Put your Vision into Action and see Achievement
4.       Make every penny work hard
5.       Live within your means
6.       Nurture your money babies
7.       Leave a Legacy
8.       Get your Relationship with God in order

The easy-to-comprehend financial guide offers detailed steps on how to make you money work for you.  The chapter reviews, charts and graphs will aid in keeping you focused.  Carter also provides eight different workshops that coincide with this book.  Yes, I Can Set My House in Order would be great for a bible study, anyone wanting to make their money grow or for a business student looking for a new way.

Dear Success Seeker

Everyone wants to be successful in life.  We are always looking for that one piece of advice that would make a difference.  Dear Success Seeker is that advice.  Wright has assembled letters from over 80 women of various backgrounds to share their wisdom.  The letters are motivational and ham packed with “pearls of wisdom”.  Some of the inspirational nuggets are:

Sandra Yancy – “Give first, share always”

Robin Wolaner – “Allow for serendipity – you can do it all just not all at once.  Follow your interests and values, the money will take care of itself.”

Susan L. Taylor – “Do what you love”

Faye Wattleton – “Be informed.  Be vigilant! Don’t shrink from power.  Support other women.  Be an independent thinker.”

Mae C. Jemison – “Always remember who you intend to be”

Dear Success Seeker should have a prominent spot on every female’s desk.  The letters should be highlighted, dog-eared, paper clipped or adorned with post-it-notes.  The words should be passed down from generation to generation.  Dear Success Seeker would make the perfect graduation, birthday, or a simple just because gift.

Poetry

5 Stars

Poetry should be felt.  Poetry should penetrate the soul and embark intense emotion.  Poetry should bang a beat with a living rhythm as the words flow from your lips.  Using this as a base, McCray proves she is a new poet to watch.  Her poems take readers on an emotional rollercoaster.  She pushes the limits of truth in words by sharing her experiences through prose.  She pens poems about love interests, friends, family, and questions authority while documenting life on the edge.  The poems have a realistic edge that reminds this reader of Def Jam poets spitting mad game.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this book.  These poems will resonate with young and old changing the way poetry is appreciated.  Hopefully poems like - His Game is Good, Mine is Better; Delete; Broken Home, Broken Heart (parts 1 & 2); and Big Picture – will be used as dramatic readings at competitive speech and poetry slams (where you can read others work).  Keep putting pen to paper McCray!

Historical Fiction – Young Adult

4 ½ stars

Finally a great read with educational value for young adults…In Search of Molly Pitcher.  Peggy McAllister discovers an award for research in social studies.  She set out to win the award and ends up learning how to research in the process.  Peggy follows the suggestion of her grandfather and engages Mrs. Spinner to help with her research.  She quickly learns what to record on note cards, how to cross check references, and the power in finding primary resources.

Peggy learns the value of proper research techniques while actively finding the real Molly Pitcher.   The historical details and interactive nature of the story makes it easy to relate to and even more enjoyable to read.  My fourth grader was so intrigued that she signed up for the social studies research project at her school.  The chapters build on each other and you are finished before you know it.  The cover art adds a pictorial diary to Peggy’s research.  If you are in need of inspiration to complete a research project – this is DEFINTELY THE BOOK!
