I said: Remember, even the beauty of birth leaves its own scars, and know that you will find your home right where you are.

She said: I know it sounds cliche, but i really am just waiting to exhale.

She isn't looking for the perfect man, she's not holding out for beauty, she is just looking for a real man. Just an upright man, but shes left with low down boys, fake thugs, and dead beat lovers, and it took her some time with herself to realize that having love is more important than having a lover.
What am I supposed to tell her?
That its going to be ok?
But it may not be ok... it may be hard and ugly, difficult, complicated, rough and bloody, and I said 'so many women are struggling'.

She said: Yeah I like a man to kiss me and to hug me, but he has to truly love love , before he can love me.

I said: I understand

She said: No you don't understand... we are women bringing up sons who think love is a disease, dogging real relationships and thinking they can take whatever they want, they treat pregnancy like an STD, turning a positive test into a negative, then they are gone, and only moments are spent with you and those moments are brief. Our son's role models are nameless products on a TV screen, they figure we cant teach them to be men so they get grown in the streets, so in this cold world they find warmth with men holding the heat.

I said: There has got to be a change somewhere.

She said: Yeah but it has to be more than some blog on the Internet

She asked me how I survived

I said: It was my mother, otherwise I would have been dead, crazy, or institutionalized. She kept us in the good neighborhood even though she couldn't keep on the power, so I could go to the best school and learn how to read and write, sometimes we would be so broke in the store we had to pick between the beans and the rice, sometimes she would put ketchup on the navy beans so it wouldn't seem like we were eating the same thing all the time. She had two jobs during the day and one at night.
I want to make sure the woman i am with never goes through the things that I saw her go through.
Because of that I know that being a man is more than being male, and I'm focused on doing it right. When I think about my childhood, I don't think about poverty, I remember how she hugged me, kissed me, taught me, loved me.
