‘Stellar’ win

Kaira Miller with Stellar award.

Jacksonville’s Kaira Miller brings home top gospel honor

Daily News staff

Kaira Miller's success has reached "stellar" heights.
After two years and two nominations, the 16-year-old earned her first Stellar Award, one of the gospel music industry's highest honors.
The Jacksonville native and her family recently returned from the 24th annual awards show in Nashville, Tenn., where she won Children's Project of the Year for her single "In God's Time/It Ain't Over." Kaira was up against four other young nominees for the award.
"My heart was pounding, but I felt relieved," she said.
Her parents, Kim and Greg Miller, were impressed by Kaira's calm demeanor when she went up to accept her award.
"People were commenting on how well she carried herself, and it made me proud," Greg said.
Kaira's publicist, Yolanda Dixon, said that she was elated to witness such a proud moment in her life.
"I almost passed out when I heard them call her name," she said. "She was so poised and she was like a seasoned vet walking up there."
Kaira has been singing since the age of 3 and wrote her first song, "My Everything," at 12. The song was nominated for last year's awards, and Kaira said that it really helped to prepare her for this year's event. Greg, who is also Kaira's manager, said that naming her second project "In God's Time" was very significant.
"We got the idea because of Kaira's name, which was a derivative of the Greek word ‘Kairos'... which translates into ‘appointed time,'" he said.
They felt that it was more than just a coincidence with her win, it was truly God's decision.
Kim said the news of Kaira's win spread throughout Jacksonville like wildfire. Family, friends, her producers at Vine Life Productions, as well as the entire congregation at Abundant Life International Cathedral, were all excited to hear the good news.
"I got so many text messages from people after they heard about it," Kaira said.
As for a celebration, the family is still deciding how they will honor Kaira's achievement.
"We're going to put our heads together to do something to celebrate the moment," Kim said.
For now, it's back to business at the Miller house. Kaira, a junior at Southwest High School, still manages to earn good grades, participate in the school marching band and head to the studio to record songs for future projects.
For Kaira and her family, one of the greatest celebrations is seeing the award on the mantle in the living room every day.
"We think it will open the door for more opportunities, and we certainly look forward to the opportunities," Greg said. "I think God has given her more than just a trophy to put on the mantle. She has the opportunity to reach out and touch not just young people, but all kinds of people."
Kaira and her family are still grateful that she was recognized for a talent she has loved since she was a toddler. Yet they remain humble and will continue to do God's work for world.
"It was very big and it was even bigger just to be nominated," she said.

To God Be the Glory For What He has done!! I am so excited to announce that I am an official 2009 Stellar Award Winner in the Children's Project of the Year Category. No words can express my gratitude to God. He is the only one who deserves all the credit. However, He did put a few people on this earth to carry out his plans for my life. I'd first like to say, I am still in awe with all that took place in Nashville, TN. I still wanna pinch myself to see if it's real.
I truly give God all the honor first, I thank my dad, my mom, and my sister for  always being on the front line with me no matter where I go, they are a best support system a person can have. I'd like to thank my family near and far they always support me and I love them dearly, My Producers: C. Marcellus, Steve Spraggins, my Auntie Yo, for being the best Publicist around. She travels with us as well. I'd like to thank My Pastor: Bishop Mullen, My Co Pastor: Vanessa Mullen, Mrs. Gail and the entire Abundant Life Church family, Mrs. Carla, My extended church families all around, My girls you know who you are, Mrs. Doreen, Mr Henry Harris, Mr. Don Jackson-The Stellar Awards, and all those connected to me in some way or another, all the independent artist, for each of you for your thoughtfulness, prayers, supports and votes. I don't like to name names because so many people effect my life in different ways, so as you read this include yourself (smile) I am sure you played a role as well!! Just a big thank you to everybody!!
My experience in Nashville at the Stellars was wonderful once again. From the drive to Tenn, to the red carpet, to the Nominee Reception, to the mall, to the Stellar Awards Show, Especially the annoucing of my name...thank you Jesus, to the Post Show, to the trip home... to my welcome home crew think I covered it all.
I felt very honored to receive an Award of such magnitude so early in my life. I was still amazed at being in the presence of all of Gospel Greats, I enjoy meeting new people, people I met on myspace, the people in my category, who were all great by the way, and people who may have voted for me. It was such a  blessing!! They treated me with such royality and class. I enjoyed every event and even the food was great! lol.
One of my best moments was seeing my mentor, Doreen Vail on the red carpet with me, she was simply beautiful so sweet and fun to be with as usual. She is always so supportive and has a big smile that just warms the heart. I was so proud of her as well.
It was a blessed weekend  and to bring back more than a memory this time was even greater!! I encourage all artist not to give up on their dreams and never let anyone say your journey is impossible, because all things are possible with God!! It may not happen right away but when you trust and follow God your time will come.
So in a nice little overview I am sooooooo happy and blessed!! and honored to be a Stellar Award Winner!!! I had a ball and look forward to going back again!!
Much Love to all!!!

All roads lead once again to Tennessee in January. I pray it was enough votes to bring the award home....but I am honored to even be considered amongst Gospel music greatest!! So anyway the Lord blesses me I'll be satisfied even if it is just to see everyone again that I admire in gospel music or to win

God Bless all of you!!

The Stellar Awards was a wonderful experience.  It was first class. I was able to meet alot of people and I can't even put into words the feeling I felt being in the presence of just about "all "of Gospel's Greatest at one time!! I was taking each moment in and counting my blessings!! Listening to my "favorites" all my life and actually being in their presence and meeting alot of them was beyond words!! Of course, God gets all the glory!

Although I did not come home with the "Stellar Award", I was rewarded in so many other ways!! I must admit I felt very misplaced in my category because the other nominees in my category were so young, and sounded much younger than me vocally, but yet beautiful and it was an honor to meet them and I am very proud of them. The winner was Jada Simone Clark,(7) the daughter of the well known, Maurette Brown-Clark. She also won a Stellar at the event. Go listen when you have a chance...type in her name and you should be able to hear her sing on her mother's cd.

I was not upset with the outcome, for indeed I know God is utimately in charge and I am truly honored and blessed to even be a nominee, first time out and not being well known, I no complaints. I know this is what I love to do. We all have our seasons to shine and mines is on the way even though I feel the "shine" on me right now (lol) and to be as far along as I am with all of my circumstances, I have nothing but positive thoughts and many great days ahead to look forward to as long as I keep God first and remain faithful to him nothing will beyond my reach. So just know I am happy and do not count not winning this time, as a "lost" but as an opportunity to come back!! "I never would have made it with Christ"!

Always remeber to never stop dreaming!!

Thanks to all who prayed for me and supported me through this journey for indeed the prayers were heard and I enjoyed myself and I won in so many other ways!! Be Blessed!

Subject: Kaira & The 2008 Stellar Awards

Kaira D. Miller
was like a seasoned veteran during our 4-day trip
to Nashville, Tennessee for the
taping of the nationally televised
2008 Stellar Gospel Music Awards!

Even though she did not win in her category, it truly
was not because of the talent level, it was ALL about
the SAGMA voting!

In the Stellar Awards "Children's Category" the 7-yr old
Jada Simone Clark, daughter of the famous gospel artist
Maurette Brown Clark, won for singing on her mother's CD.

Nonetheless, one thing is for certain, our very own
KAIRA MILLER
will always carry the title
"2008 Stellar Gospel Award Nominee"
throughout our entire Nation
and that in itself is an ENORMOUS accomplishment
and we are all so VERY proud of her!!

What an awesome time we had during the fast-paced 3 days!

After a good night's rest, we were invited to the ASCAP Recording
Industry reception on Friday afternoon (Jan 11th)  from 3 - 5 PM,, where we were able to meet some of gospel's greatest up close and personal like Kelly Price, Maurette Brown Clark, Trintee 5:7, Detrick & Damita Haddon, and J. Moss....just to name a few...during that afternoon.

Then we rushed to the Gaylord Opryland where Kaira and her dad (Elder
Greg Miller) got in the receiving line to be announced to  the massive
media as they strolled down the RED CARPET  for many photo shoots and
media coverage!   Oh how exciting it was to witness this!  To see it on
television awards shows is one thing, but to witness it first-had was
breathtaking!   This took place from 6:00-7:30 PM.
Kaira was so seasoned and poised that you would have thought she was a
PRO at this!  It was there that we saw and got to mingle with so, SO
many gospel artists--like Ziel, 21:03, Tramaine Hawkins, Angela Spivey,
Kirk Franklin, Dwayne Woods, Bobby Jones, The Pace Sisters, The Clark
Sisters (Dorinda and Twinkie), Sherri Shepard (from the VIEW television
show), Tamela and David Mann (Cora and Mr. Brown from the Tyler Perry
plays), and so many, many more!

Immediately following the Red Carpet event, we were led to the
Ballroom for the invitation only Stellar Awards Nominee Dinner that was held in the Governor's Ballroom.
Our table was right next to the fabulous, anointed Pace Sisters, Bishop Noel Jones, as well
as Tamela and David Mann.  After some sensational gospel performances, and a delicious meal
all the nominees were called up to the stage in their categories to be
presented and photographed with their Stellar Nominee Award Certificates
and received arousing applauses from an estimated 400 - 500 guests to
include all the Stellar Award nominees.  The room was buzzing with
excitement and anticipation!

The next morning, which was Saturday, Kaira had to rise early to do radio interviews at the media Brunch.
She also did a live phone in interview with the radio station (730 am) out of  Goldsboro, NC

Later that night was the actual "Stellar Awards" where we saw some of the best performances
And the spirit was high which made it a very joyous ocassion. Kaira was honored to be seated across
the aisle from Dr. Marvin Sapp. There was a comedian to keep us entertained during the stage
Changes and it turned out to be a wonderful evening. Kaira of coursed looked beautiful.

Nobody BUT God worked this out, something this extraordinary to happen
to Kaira and her family!  And I, as the publicist (smile) am so glad
to be a part of this momentus event. Thanks to those who were able to  meet us there!
For I know there were more who wanted to attend but were unable.
A big thank you to those who were a blessing to her and sowed into her.

God has something GREAT in store for Kaira!  This is only the beginning!
Thanks for your continuous support and continue to keep her lifted in prayer as she proceed with her new project! Now go to her pics and check out all the Stellar Photos and ASCAP Luncheon!!

Local youth receives recognition for gospel music

Who knew Jacksonville had its own nationally-recognized recording artist?

Or even that said recording artist has a Marine Corps connection?

Kaira Miller, 15, daughter of retired Marine and current Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune employee Greg Miller and his wife Kim, has not only recorded her very own gospel CD, but has been nominated for two prestigious gospel recording industry awards.

The Southwest High School sophomore released her debut album this summer to rave reviews. Later, she was nominated as the only under-18 artist for the independent En Sound Awards in the Best Urban Soul Album category.

Though she did not receive the final nod for that award, Kaira has also made the official ballot for the Stellar Awards in the Children's Performance of the Year category. The field originally started off with six nominees and the young singer has made the cut to the final four to make the ballot.

"It is recognized at the premiere award for the gospel music industry. It's remarkable as Kaira is not a professional artist and [her CD] was deemed good enough to receive the final ballot. We are just very proud of Kaira and the gentlemen who helped produce the CD," said her father.

The final award will be revealed Jan. 12, 2008, when the 23rd Annual Stellar Awards show takes place at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn.

"Well, I'm just still in shock. It's amazing to watch something on TV every year and then to actually go and participate is really amazing," said Kaira of the nomination.

The album is called "My Everything," and is titled after the first song Kaira wrote. "My Everything' is really just saying the Lord is my everything — it just talks about the different ways he brings me joy and how I love him," she said.

Kaira's recording career was sparked at her church, Abundant Life International Baptist Cathedral on Gum Branch Road when she played the song for one of the musicians, a man who has a studio at his house.

Christopher Marcellus and Steve Spraggins of Vine of Life Productions produced the CD, a 14-track affair with a contemporary, urban feel which includes a cover of the classic William and Gloria Gaither song "Because He Lives." Kaira wrote three songs on the album and contributed to the other songs in some measure.

"I really feel that there's a bit of divine providence in all of this in connecting with Steve and Chris and making a CD," commented Kaira.

Though all of the excitement of producing a CD and being nominated for prestigious awards, Kaira is still a busy high schooler. She sang the lead role of Dorothy in her school's production of The Wiz last year and sang the National Anthem at the homecoming football game this year. During that game, she also was in the homecoming court and then changed clothes to play the snare drum in the band.

According to her mother, Kaira is also often on the honor roll and principal's list at her school. "She has a lot to juggle, but she does pretty well," said the mother. "She still gets fussed at about cleaning her room, but she does well."

What's next for this gospel crooner? "As far as my career," said Kaira. "I'll just go as far as God takes me. I don't really know what's to come."

"My Everything" is available for sale or download at cdbaby.com/cd/kaira2.
