The Marassa Duo (James Armstrong and Nicholas Papador) recently appeared at the XV Festival Internacional De Percusión (José Alicea Espada, founder and artistic director) at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. The festival took place on August 26 – 28 in San Juan. On August 27, Marassa Duo gave an afternoon clinic which detailed rhythmic and melodic concepts in the folkloric music of Afro-Haitian vodou as heard in the duo’s lasted composition, Voduophidian. The group also discussed technical topics and musical entrepreneurship by means of respectfully combining various musical styles. Marassa Duo also performed an evening concert, sharing the stage with Dave Samuels, the Conservatory’s own percussion ensemble, and Tito de Gracia’s stunning Latin fusion ensemble, Naoka Jam. Marassa Duo extends its continued thanks to Vic Firth Inc., Sabian, Yamaha (US and Canada) and Latin Percussion for their support of the group’s project and activities. Moreover, the group would like to thank José Alicea, Wilma Colón, Sandra Rovira, and the staff of the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico for their hospitality and hard work in producing this world class percussion event.
