Tell the Senate to Cut Oil Subsidies

Friends of the Earth worked with the leadership of the House of Representatives to craft a bill that turns giveaways to the oil industry into billions for research into alternative energy sources.
During its first 100 hours, the new House of Representatives passed groundbreaking legislation that would cut off $14 billion in handouts to the oil industry and invest that money in alternative energy.  We don't need to tell you that development of alternative energy such as wind and solar power is absolutely crucial to solving our global warming crisis.  It is also imperative that we move away from our addiction to unstable foreign sources of oil.

The House Bill now sits stalled in the Senate – blocked at the behest of the White House and Big Oil lobbyists.  We need your help to get it passed.

Now is the time to take the money we are giving the oil companies and invest it in energy for our childrens' futures.

Under the House Bill, the $14 billion now being given away to Big Oil would pay to promote renewable fuels such as solar and wind power, alternative fuels including ethanol and biodiesel and incentives for conservation.

The industry can afford it.  They are gushing money.  For example, Exxon's profits were nearly $40 billion last year. That was more money than had been made by any corporation in history.

Now the industry says it needs the $14 billion federal handout to explore for new sources of oil.  Let's look at how Exxon spent its profits.  Roughly $25 billion went to buy back the company's stock.  A miniscule portion of their profits are being spent on wind, solar or other forms of alternative energy.

Simply put, the oil industry does not need help from the taxpayers.

Write your Senators and tell them to support the House Bill to cut Big Oil subsidies and put that money where it will do the most good: into alternative energy.

Tell TXU Not to Build Massive Nuclear Power Plants

It looked as if the environmental community had scored a major victory when TXU announced its intention to scrap eight of eleven planned coal-fired power plants. Then the other shoe dropped: while TXU would build only three, large coal-fired plants, it would also build two to five of the largest nuclear reactors on the planet!

    * Texas ranks first in the nation for wind, solar and biomass potential

    * Infrastructure to create wind energy can go up within a year; TXU's nuclear plants are not expected to go online until 2015

    * Texas law requires that at least 2,000 Megawatts of energy come from renewable resources by 2009

    * A decision by TXU to scrap nuclear power plants in exchange for wind power or other renewable resource power would garner a great deal of positive PR for the company

TAKE ACTION NOW and Don't Let TXU Go Nuclear in Texas!

Take Action - Protect California Marine Sanctuaries

Marine sanctuaries along California's coast are under assault from cruise ship pollution and jetski use. These sanctuaries are home to some of the most magnificent marine habitat in the world. Ocean waters from outside San Francisco Bay all the way south to Monterey Bay and Big Sur have been recognized for their beauty and biological diversity.

After years of public pressure, sanctuary managers are proposing stronger regulations that will stop cruise ships from dumping waste into sanctuary waters but they need to hear from the public.

Dear Friend of the Earth:

The Bush administration has reached a new low with the appointment of Lee Raymond, the retired chief of ExxonMobil, to head a study to help America chart a cleaner course for our energy needs. Tell the administration that Exxon shouldn't be charting our energy future. Go to:

http://action.foe.org/dia/organizationsORG/foe/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=5830

During his long tenure at ExxonMobil, the company:

    * funded front groups that worked to discredit the science on global warming
    * resisted funding clean energy alternatives
    * lobbied aggressively to drill in the Arctic Refuge

This study should be in the hands of an independent body like the National Academy of Sciences.  It's absurd to think that the ex-CEO of ExxonMobil will help us make the switch from oil to clean energy. Take Action! Go to:

Just incase you didn't think we were serious about global warming:  Friends of the Earth sues the Bush administration for failing to submit a report on climate change!

National Briefing West: California: Groups Sue Over Climate Report

LENGTH: 88 words

Three environmental groups -- Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Center for Biological Diversity -- filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in San Francisco, saying the Bush administration failed to submit a national report on climate change to Congress, as required by federal law. Ben Fallon, a spokesman for the White House Office of Science and Technology, said the administration had ''constantly issued reports to Congress'' that have advanced the nation's understanding on climate change.
