Stepping off the plane into San Antonio I could already feel the sun that would welcome Loudlove to Texas and the 2009 edition of the SxSw and Red Gorilla Festival. Arriving a few days before our showcases we made our way from San Antonio to Austin via the Bert and SuebExpress. Our rental car plans had been mixed up due to a site I went to instead of dealing with Avis directly. We arrived to no car and no place to stay, only 3000 km from home... so what else is new?
Dan's parents literally saved our asses. Since we had left all our gear in Ottawa to avoid certain costs and to make travel easier, Dan and I were easy to accommodated.
Traveling north from San Antonio to Austin took about an hour. With Hans coming in on Thursday at 2 pm in San Antonio and Peter into Austin around 430 pm there was some things to get done before they arrived. Passes to pick up, gear to find, accommodations to secure, people and venues to locate, oh and get a car to do all the above.
This is an extremely long story that I will shorten so to not bore you with details. Lets just say there was never a dull moment and stress levels rose and fell as the challenges that would be presented were crushed with Canadian know-how and kinship.
To avoid complications we left our cd's home and made arrangements to pick up some download cards at the RGF. Arriving to gather our passes for our show the download cards were delayed. This would become a common occurrence. Now we had no gear, no car, no accommodations, nothing to hand out to our new fans. So smooth.... smooth Loudlove style anyways.
After picking up Hans in SA, drive courtesy of Bert and Sue, we rented our car and awaited Peter in Austin. With a showcase at 6pm at Nina's Lounge we were still looking for gear at 530. Standing on the corner of 6th and Neches who should arrive but Trevor Finlay and Josee. Trevor, an Ottawa musician, had recently became a resident of Nashville, TN. Taking his song writing and guitar to the south in search of all his dreams. We needed a bass, guitar and breakables for Dan. Not one band was willing to help out their musical brothers from the North. With time fleeting and no prospects in sight the faint sound of French was overheard outside a club across the street. Hans as smooth as ever approached and sure enough a band from Montreal named Jo Hell,
www.myspace.com/johellband , originally from Montreal would come to our rescue. Without a moments thought, Jo Hell, agreed to lend us their gear.
Being Canadian had saved our ass. We would travel 3000 km to be helped by our native friends of Montreal. Many thanks to all the guys in Jo Hell. At five minutes to 6, patch cords and gear in hand Loudlove took the stage at Nina's in Austin, Texas and we played our first international show of the bands 8 year career.
I would to personally thank the girl from New Mexico for sharing here love of Loudlove before they had even struck a cord. The bartender for her dancing on the bar and the sound man for his literal comment of "... Hey these guys are actually good." But it was the shock on his face that spoke volumes.
With he support of fellow Canadians Trevor Finlay, Josee, Lee, Bryan, Dan and Mark in attendance Loudlove closed out the short set with a new tune called Island. A certain calmness fell over me. Stress now gone a smile of contentment grew as the last note rung out. A feeling of pride came over me. My friends had just played Austin, Texas.
One down and two to go. All we needed now was accommodations, food and
time. The time to see what else Austin had to offer. There was music crawling in from every direction. Glaring down on us thru the 86 degree sun we returned the gear with thanks the Jo Hell and wandered thru the crowd that would swell to 1000's as the day wore on.
As the sun set that night in Austin we retreated to the KOA about 15 minutes out of the downtown of Austin. Bert and Sue had come thru again and offered to put the 4 of us up for the night. Sharing a bed with Peter is never easy, especially when its a no bigger than Peter himself. Let..s just say my thoughts were 3000 miles away in the warm and loving arms of my wife.
To be continued.
