Travel By Sea "Days Of My Escape" (Autumn Tone, 2008)

Melody, harmony and a place for reflection

What makes this a slightly different proposition from the millions of other band who cite Buckner, Adams and Oldham as a reference point, is that Travel By Sea make music over the phone, by email, or whatever other medium is possible in communicating sounds from Colorado to California. Essentially Kyle Kersten and Brian Kraft approach the making and recording of these songs from many hundreds of miles apart. That they are so obviously intrinsically linked in their ideas of melody, harmony, and the very essence of their reverb-driven americana is one of space and reflection, makes the whole exercise something to both applaud and cherish. Following up a 2006 self-released album 'Days Of My Escape' is a record of real worth. I can see why they choose to highlight the mighty threesome as a reference, as, yes, I can hear the brutal honesty of Buckner, the painful self-antongising of Adams, and the wistful, almost ethereal Oldham melodies, but for me you can throw the intelllect and lyrical languidity of Will Johnson's South San Gabriel. These are songs that unfold slowly to the ear, like little aural treasures unearthed. It's a glorious record that becomes more poingnant and necessary the more you play it, sitting their in the back of the mind eating away at your senses until you once again succumb to its charm. Kerstan and Kraft are made for each other. Both adopt a 'less is more' apprach, both are masters of the understated. Between them they create a mood – a reflective chasm – that allows for these songs to resonate and breath. It's a skill that only a few can achive, and, given this is record that was essentially put togther on the net, its all the more impressive.

Travel By Sea  - Days Of My Escape
Folk Music For The End Of The World. Days Of My Escape treedt in de voetsporen… (Wim Boluijt)

Travel By Sea's second LP, Days Of My Escape, is another lesson in the power of less is more. Kyle Kersten and Brian Kraft return to our headphones with 11 tracks and 44 minutes of what is now a signature sound of hushed lullabies and midnight crackles. Put out by Autumn Tone, the band's sophomore effort is full of the kind of the country music that creeps around at night ("Too Much Too Quickly") and walks through the woods ("Shake You") just to find a seat on a train ("Let It All Die Down") from Denver to California.

Kersten's soft vocal attack is the highlight on Days Of My Escape. He wants you to listen, but is afraid to ask. Ever had an overwhelming feeling to get out of the silly city or town you're in? Get away from the honking horns, the homeless asking for just one more dollar, and the bongos in the subway? That quiet is his voice. Even on the "rocker," "When It Slowly Fades," Kersten's anti-twang finds a way to sound like a rainy day vacation. It's a hard skill to stumble upon, but he seems to have found it pretty early on in his days.

Days of My Escape is just where you and I want to be..."20 miles to the Blue Ridge."

Building on the bones of their 2006 debut, Shadows Rise, Travel by Sea return Spring of 2008 with their sophomore LP Days of My Escape. Once again crafted over the wire - separated by the wilderness between California and Colorado - Travel by Sea’s Kyle Kersten and Brian Kraft use the distance to their advantage. The space and airiness of the opening notes put the wheels in a slow motion descent down the San Diego highway, setting off an eleven song post-folk soundscape replete with hopeful melancholy and longing melodies. From pulsed hush to sparse country singe, Kraft provides a seemingly limitless sonic and instrumental palette of which to augment Kersten’s vocal vignettes. The Broken West’s Dan Iead and Pink Nasty guest.
