Current mood:  bummed
Our friend and part-time keyboard player, Johnny Keys, suffered a massive stroke Wednesday morning. Needless to say, we are all concerned and our prayers and thoughts go out to him and his family.

Johnny is an incredible guy and a great musician. I've been privileged to have him play in my band and I look forward to him joining us again in the near future. Johnny is best known by most as the host of the Thursday night open mic at Big John's Pub, and that is where I first met him. John is a champion of homegrown music and I often think that not many people realize just how important local open mic nights are. They are breeding grounds of creativity--spots where everyone is welcome, no matter what the level of playing ability. It is a chance for your local plumber to come, have a few beers, and get up and play a few songs he learned on the internet. They are a place for people to forget about the economy, the war, and all of their personal problems and play "Smoke on the Water" with an extended jam tagged on the end. They really bring things back to what music was supposed to be about to begin with: fun!

Before the advent of record companies, studios, CDs, concert tours, ticket sales, etc., music was about bringing people together to have fun. Open mics are the epitome of that. And behind the open mic are people like Johnny, loading and unloading gear in the cold and rain, staying into the late hours of the morning so one lone drunk can play a crappy rendition of "Can't You See," not doing it for fame, not doing it for money, but strictly for the love of music. That's as noble a cause as one can have by my definitions! The most recent time I saw Johnny was two weeks ago when he gave me a ride home from the bar. We were driving down Union Valley Road listening to Neil Young and talking about music. Johnny pulled into my driveway and I leaned over to give him a hug: "You know your way outta here, John?" I asked. "Yeah, man, I'll see you soon, Brian," he replied. "Oh, right, man--I'll see ya soon!" I looked back over my shoulder as I walked through the rain up my driveway. His headlights hit my front door and I walked in. I'm still counting on seeing him soon! Give a thought and prayer to Johnny Keys today.

Current mood:  strong

It's been 13 years now since the last time I saw you. Hard to believe it could be that long.

I wanted you to know that there are many great people fighting for reform. Fighting for change. Fighting to make sure what happened to you and so many others can never happen again.

The survivors are incredible! Their conviction is unwavering! They are true and noble warriors! I have learned much.

They finally held congressional hearings on these so called "tough love" programs. About 20 years to late, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

I miss you my friend. I hold you close to my heart. Visit me in the dream realm.

Brian

Had a great time in Chicago!

The boys and I did a radio show in the afternoon followed by a show at The Beverly Arts Center Saturday night. We opened the show for Mike Mangione and Michael McDermott. Had a great time and met a bunch of great people.

The night ended with us realizing that our van was no longer in the spot we had parked. A few minutes of gazed looks followed by the hopes that it had only been towed and not stolen. Turned out the later was true, thank God!

Traveled to the southside of town to pick it up and gratefully all our gear was intact.

On the 13 hour drive home we hit some biblical rainstorms in the mountains of Pennsylvania. We pressed on with Johnny Keys at the helm.

I returned the van to the rental agency yesterday. The guy behind the counter asked me if all had gone well, I smiled and said yes. It's a good thing vans can't talk.

Hope to be back in Chicago soon. Thanks to all the new friends we met and anyone who was at the show. Hope you had as much fun as we did, but I seriously doubt that's possible!

Thanks to Michael McDermott for being such a good friend to me, and Mike Mangione for not being related to Chuck Mangione and being a far better musician as well.

If I said that Brian Fitzpatrick is the best kept secret in New Jersey, you might get the wrong idea. Hell, he might get the wrong idea. What I mean is that Brian, who has a large and loyal following, deserves an even bigger audience. His 2004 release Further Down The Line was one of the year's best albums, and Worse For Wear, despite the title, does not disappoint.

If you're looking for bombast, or political attitude, look elsewhere. But if you can appreciate simple, heartfelt, and expertly crafted songs played by a very talented band, and sung in Brian's appealing, husky tenor voice, this album is for you. "Carrie With The Broken Heart" tells the tale of finding artistic and emotional connection at a Jersey open mic night. The closing "Hey Mary" employs what sounds like a choir of friends on a chorus that will have you singing along.

Do yourself a favor. Now that you're in on the secret, spread the word. Brian plays around the area all the time. In fact, he'll be at Sullivan Hall in New York City for his CD release party on May 23. You can pick up a copy of Worse For Wear at the gigs, through ITunes, Amazon.com, or CD Baby.

Current mood:  triumphant

To the Clash Bar this Saturday night! We will be opening a show for our friends and punk pop legends The Fiendz!

We have quite a few shows coming up in the next two months not the least of which is our CD release show at Sullivan Hall in NYC. It has been quite a while since I've played the city and I am excited to get back. Mark the date: May 23rd.

The new record "Worse For Wear" will be officially released on May 20th. We are all very excited about this record. It was written and recorded very quickly and very much catches a moment.

The first video and single off the record, "My Liver's Killing Me" is available on youtube.com. Here is the link:

Lastly, Thanks for all of the support for the past couple of months! If it's coming to show, buying a disc, or simply sending an email or comment of support, we really appreciate it! It's important to let you all know that!

We finished tracking the new record this past Sunday. Tim will start mixing it next week and then it will go off to Memphis to be mastered. We will be shooting a video for the first single "Laughing Out Loud (Rain's Coming Down)" sometime within the next two months.

I'm very happy with the way the recording has turned out thus far. I think it is a much different direction for me. It has a very unique vibe.

Just a reminder that I will be playing a show at Maxwell's in Hoboken on the 30th of this month. I will be opening for Michael McDermott and Eileen Rose. I go on promptly at 8:00PM. Please make it down if you can as this is an important show for me. Looking forward to it!

The best to everyone in the new year!
