I'm not really sure why I've done this other than the fact that it's there, I had a moment or two of curiosity about it and a had a spare five minutes but I have finally joined twitter. Now no one will be free from irregular updates on the thoughts and eating habits of Mike Gayle!

Dear all,
this is just a quick note to confirm that the rumours that some of you might have heard are right! There is a new book in the pipeline. It's called The To Do List, it's out Jan 8th 2009 and it's different from all my other books in that it's my first full length foray into non-fiction! I've enclosed the blurb from the back of the jacket at the bottom of the post and keep an eye out for a brand new To Do List related blog coming your way very soon!

Have a great Christmas and new year

cheers

The To Do List

One man, two birthdays and a 52-week attempt to tackle a 1277-item To-doList ...

On the eve of his 36th birthday, bestselling author and journalist Mike Gayle picked up a pen and contemplated his life. In less than twenty-four hours he would be officially closer to 40 than to 30; his second child was due; his ten-year wedding anniversary imminent -- despite his best efforts he had become an adult. Well, nearly. Gripped by a determination to sort out his life once and for all, Mike writes a To-do list of all the things he has meant to do but never quite got round to. Everything from empty kitchen of Chinese takeaway menus (467) to spend more time with parents because they won't always be around (12). It's a long list. There's a lot of stuff that needs doing. But unlike previous lists, made and long abandoned, Mike promises himself that this one will actually get DONE.

Review by Sinclair McKay in the Telepgraph (Saturday 8 November):

"Nicely structured across the course of a year, and following the intertwining lives and loves of three young couples near Manchester, Mike Gayle's novel offers a sometimes moving story about the vagaries of relationships, and how friendships can be affcted when these relationships hit bad patches.

At the start, Paul's death in a car crash serves to pull us into the events of the preceding few months, as the long-term effects of his break-up with Melissa ripple outwards. Gayle (rather bravely) often writes in the first person as a female character, but he hits the right notes, and the result is a warm and unforced comedy. We are not in the realm of farce: Gayle's humour is human and he has a fine eye for the quiet pain of unrequited love."
