One man, two birthdays and a 52-week attempt to tackle a 1277-item To-doList ...

On the eve of his 36th birthday, bestselling author and journalist Mike Gayle picked up a pen and contemplated his life. In less than twenty-four hours he would be officially closer to 40 than to 30; his second child was due; his ten-year wedding anniversary imminent -- despite his best efforts he had become an adult. At the start, Paul's death in a car crash serves to pull us into the events of the preceding few months, as the long-term effects of his break-up with Melissa ripple outwards. Gayle (rather bravely) often writes in the first person as a female character, but he hits the right notes, and the result is a warm and unforced comedy. We are not in the realm of farce: Gayle's humour is human and he has a fine eye for the quiet pain of unrequited love."
