KELLY’S LOT @ CAFE MONTMARTRE,IXELLES OCT 4TH 2009

Roadhouse/Blues from California

KELLY ZIRBES isn’t an ordinary chick, she is a dynamite! She put all the guys (from 16 to 77 years) on their knees, the women dream of taking her place.

Attention Z Kelly has over the 20 years, but she is not in the category 'Sarah' by Serge Reggiani / George Moustaki either (... mouth worn out by the kisses too often, but too bad given .. .). The lady lived and had some disappointments(setbacks )... She gave a lot, and still gives :a show of three hours, and if, Didier, the owner of the bar, doesn’t  beg her to stop at midnight thirty (neighbors  have to work on Monday ...), she would still play.

I won’t mention his band, cracks ... the semi-acoustic guitar (Ryhthm guitar) and VC backin, her husband : the strong and smiling Perry Robertson,  on bass: Matt 'sunglasses' Mc Fadden and the lead, Rob Zucca, this guy,who holding a coffee shop near LA, you comes out some scratch lines (his is born before the Civil War) not stung to beetles.

Before entering the heart of the matter, adding that Miss Z runs the Marathon in less than 49 'and in her spare time, she committed in the fight against hepatitis C. She is amazing, Kelly! I'm on the list to marry when she is sick of Perry.

First Set
'Train' a component of the beautiful, from the album 'Trio' of 2003. (She has released 5 CD's).
Blues funky and sexy with a dual guitar solo. The absence of drums is not felt, the sound is perfect. Soon you compare the tone warm and raspy from the man-eater to the largest: Bonnie Raitt (one of his idols), Yvonne Elliman, Rita Coolidge, Elkie Brooks and Karla Bonoff ... This train is featured on the soundtrack of 'King of California' by Mike Cahill (featuring Michael Douglas ...).

A cover 'Brand New Key' Melanie (Safka) No. 1 in the charts in 1972. Brilliant!
'Come to this' always on 'Trio' is the blues, no question of ignoring ... I woke up this morning ... my soul is empty ... a juicy solo by Rob.

A new song 'Better Way', maybe about killing your husband, wink to her man ... I'm gonna build me a wall, build it tall tonight ... you hard, I warn you ... nobody's gonna hurt me ... not tender, the pussycat !
For the bikers, a jazzy 'Route 66'. Try to respect the speed limit of 70 mph, Rob!

This is for Matt, which was fun to drive at 250 mph on the Nürburgring: 'Drive'  a blues / rock energic and speeded.
We are late bloomers, says Mrs. Zirbes and this one is for an angry ex-boss: 'Close my Eyes', a tango / blues, introduced by a whistle pretty hummingbird.
James Taylor / Carly Simon: 'Mockingbird' amazing version, while fondling and Slicky guitar licks. 'Fair' little singalong hopping on the latest CD 'The Light'.
'Right now' funky love song. People, it's time to slow down: 'Woman's Love' has sensitive slow blues, to tears flow. 'Strong girl' a strong rock, the lady has balls.

Before founding Kelly's Lot, I was 35, I played folk. From club to club with my guitar, I was a Folksinger, I always followed the credo of Janis Joplin: sing from the heart ... 'Me & Bobby McGee'. Not the only one who is driven by chills, Loli , he motioned, pointing his finger at the second microphone: May I ? ... Freedom is just another word ... Ovations! The room is crowded, the audience is warm as a frenzy.
Melissa Etheridge 'Let me go ... if you can not love me, let me go ... got it, guys!

'Tired' a genuine blues ... I'm tired of being alone ... Calimero syndrome 'Nobody loves me’ ... but we all love you, Kelly. Her Perry gives us  a recital acoustic cannon. Jealous, Zucca, responds by showing him he can do better at the slide. Pure enjoyment, and poor Kelly ... Baby, I'm so blue, yeah ..
Yeah, 75 'of happiness!

Break and supplies.

The CD's ,15 € for the both cds, are sold by the dozen, autograph session for Kelly and her boys.

Set 2
Start without me guysl, the friendly Didier, offered me a glass of wine ...
'Little Wing', you’re  flying away.
Mijn glass is empty: 'You're the only reason', a new title.
'Just a heart' of the country Kasatchok a Cossack dance on stage ... Forget words, coz words are lies ...
Bonnie Raitt, 1972, 'Give it up ... you come home drunk and disgusting, where were you ... if you want me to love you You got to give it up or let me go ... complicated, love!
'Unsure' always doubts in love, while Perry and Rob leave the guns. A backfire insane, a dazzling fireworks.
A folksong, I wrote 20 years ago, 'Back to L A'.
Back to rootsy blues, Bonnie Raitt, again: 'Love Me Like a Man ", spectacular. Shoot first, gentlemen. Do you make us another solo, Chouki? No, baby ... You can love me like a man ... I have goosebumps.
'Today': Carpe Diem said Epicurus.
Three notes, we all understood it and hummed before she sings 'House of the Rising Sun'. The Montmartre explodes, Eric Burdon in skirt killed us. Loli is running fast for  singing in duo, and it inserts 'Amazing Grace'. Amazing!

Perry: Hey, Rob, pass me your guitar ... Tchik, Tchik, Tchik ... All the convicts are crying. The wah wah we deal the final blow. Intense howls, has Belgium won the World Cup?
They continue with 'Nobody here but me' philosophical. It's your life andyou have only one, you do not shit!

Without respite: 'Crossroads', version of Eric Clapton.
'Redbone' in tribute to Leon Redbone, a little jazz distinguished.
The latest: 'The Light', title track of the last born. The light, a favorite subject. New space left for the boys, who took the opportunity to add John Lee Hooker and ZZ Top in the track.
Madness in the house, my neighbor excited blew our mugs on the table, three roosters play like crazy , the hen is back, she saw the light!
Nobody wants to believe that the party is over.
OK, OK, we quenches one’s thirst and play a third set, after ... Bye Bye Europe, back to California ...

Set 3
Dancers invaded the area opposite the stage, it’s the feast: 'The House is a rocking', Stevie Ray Vaughan ... Down around the corner Half a mile from here ... Godv. 'Long Train Runnin' Doobie Brothers to the best of southern rock!
Surprise, an old jazz track 'Why Do not You Do Right' directory of Peggy Lee ... get out of here and get me some money too ... Hey, you, yes you, man, give me your money ... The good guys put his money at the feet of the Lady. Matt, Peter and Rob transform the standard "Stray Cat Strut '... I do not bother chasing mice around ... You have to see her, the mouse, taking the pose like a cat ... she's got cat class and she's got cat style ... for sure!

A triumph!
No recall, cops obliged.
Anyway, 180 'together, who says better

Kelly’s Lot in All Access Magazine March 2009

The Light by: Kelly's Lot

Promoting themselves as "Rockin' Roadhouse Blues," and rightly so, Kelly's Lot has delivered a disk that also confirms the group's solid status as straight-ahead rockers. Fronted by the energetic Kelly Zirbes, who also writes most of the songs, the band features not only guitarists Rob Zucca and Perry Robertson, plus bass and drums by Mark Drews and Sebastian Sheehan, but also an awesome wind player named Bill Johnston, who handles both sax and clarinet, and who wails just as well as any lead guitarist. (And make no mistake, Rob and Perry are great on this disk!) Kelly herself has one of those gritty voices that goes so well with the hard-luck expressions of the blues, right up there with Bonnie Raitt or Melissa Etheridge. So when she comes out from the gate with "Drive," the blues-based opening track, you feel the drive from her soul, and again, on the slowed-down electric blues of "Tired," she gets that down-home feel from the fields, with hot sauce on it. One note, though: Kelly couldn't keep herself from rhyming "girl" and "world" on three different songs, but hey, if it works for Robert Plant or Madonna, then let Kelly make it so as well! Let it be known: Kelly's Lot is a big supporter of Hepatitis-C awareness and research -- heck, they're doing another benefit this very Saturday, March 14, down at Java Joe’s in Yorba Linda. And because of the great spirit and good contained in work like that, it's really fitting that the Kelly's Lot CD closes with a song that's not too blue at all, "Say Yes To Life" -- positive vibrations from a bluesgirl with a big heart! Kellys Lot Loves Crystal Hot Sauce

Legendary Louisiana Company Hears “The Light” (Los Angeles, CA): New Orleans-based Baumer Foods jumped on board in February 2009 with Kelly’s Lot to celebrate Mardi Gras here in Los Angeles on Fat Tuesday at The Mint. Baumer Foods gave away their well-known Crystal Hot Sauce and Mardi Gras beads to attendees at the show. Kelly’s Lot relationship with the legendary Louisiana company started after Kelly Z, the band’s lead singer, contacted them about her use of their Hot Sauce to get energy and help her voice during long gigs. After hearing their new CD, “The Light”, Baumer foods decided to offer the band a product sponsorship. The Fat Tuesday concert marks the first official event for this partnership. Baumer foods is regarded as a New Orleans landmark, distinguished from the ‘20s until Hurricane Katrina devastated its warehouse, by a large neon sign formerly near Tulane and Carrolton Avenue. Today, the company continues to ship some 3 million gallons of Crystal Hot Sauce to consumers in more than 75 countries. Formed in 1996, Kelly’s Lot built its sound on a solid Blues/Rock foundation, playing Americana music with a slightly Alternative edge. The band was honored with the “Best Blues Band” award by Rock City News and named one of the top bands in the U.S. by Independent Songwriter Magazine. After a successful tour to Belgium and France in 2008, Kelly’s Lot is headed back to Europe for a second tour. ******************************************

HERE's another REVIEW OF OUR NEW CD "The Light" by Billy Bunker!---------- Kelly's Lot has pulled out all the stops and turned the blues up to 11 on their amps for an assault on the darkness aimed at shooting off the lampshades. This album breaks on through to the other side of midnight. At first listen to Kelly Zirbes' blast above the tower of power I say, "We've had this date from the beginning!" Hang on to your illusions if you can, all that ambition that's been driving you may find a little focus in this Lot's blast furnace to knock right off the road to nowhere. That's hyperbole. I know it. I'm trying to find a clever way to say it. This album moves me. A great album should not be a guilty pleasure, it should be worthy of your heart. This album will damn straight get somebody through a month they might not make it any other way. This band did what music is supposed to do. It makes me want to be a better man. They did it the old fashioned way with great songs, inventive powerful music, and something honest to sing. The road to The Light begins with rejecting the lies, denial and half empty promises on the road to love. There's plenty of rejection in the blues on this album. Kelly Zirbes has the focus to see the truth. Kelly's Lot is a damn fine blues band, with tricks up it's sleeve to take it where it needs to go. The combination of polish and power is heard to find, and positive messages fail in the drool of hearts and flowers half the time. Not so this album. There's plenty of darkness on the road to The Light. Kelly has spent eight years or more spreading the word about Hep C, and giving hope to people who came near the brink of dying. (There's a link to a Hep C site below. Kelly's word on the eight years, "I'd rather save a life than get famous singing the blues.") She's not whistling Dixie when she says, "Say yes to life." This music comes from the deep waters of a half full glass from a band whose seen the dehydrated world gasping for love in clubs and bars, and wasting away in front of their TVs. Kelly Z isn't a poser. I've seen an abbreviated Kelly's Lot sing a couple of songs at a benefit. They were damn good! I've heard the previous album, and it was a fine thing. This new CD makes good on the promise and exceeds expectations. There's something hard to describe makes an album great. Every song has to connect. The musicians have to have the chops and they have to play the song like they mean it. The combination of skill, heart and love of life and music kicks out the doubt and makes a statement of every song. This album rocks. There's pop power where it's needed, and the still beating heart of the front porch folk song when nothing else will do. Kelly's vocals have never been better. I think she nails it from the heart. Guitarist and frequent co-writer Perry Robertson is Stevie Ray and Ryan Adams by turns as clean and powerful as I've heard. Bill Johnston makes some of these songs possible with his inventive sax and clarinet. He extends the color and range of the band. Rob Zucca offers that alternative voice on guitar that fits and fills out the meaning of the song. Mark Drews on bass is one of the great supportive electric players on this album. Sebastian Sheehan's drums nail each song. Kelly's harmonica players are a cut above in Linda Moss and Gary Seagrove. Here's the kicker. There's not a hint of studio musician slick in the bunch. Kelly's Lot is a band from Los Angeles. That's a rare thing. Bands play together with one voice and know the song. They did that on this album, and they do it live. This album is a gift. It rocks. It moves me. For more including a a song by song review please visit http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=56379998&blogID=392520934

"The Light" is an amazing compilation of rocking blues songs by Kelly's Lot. I plan to recommend it to many of my friends. I've seen The Lot perform before as a trio, which is always a great show, I was blown away as I started listening to the CD and I thought that I had accidentally put in a ZZ Top album, until I heard "All your life you drive alone" and it was Kelly all right. Someone said you she sounds like Bonnie Raitt on caffeine and I though that was an understatement. But her voice is sweeter than Bonnie, albeit still very powerful and edgy, sort of like, maybe Goldie Zelkowitz (aka Genya Ravan)? The album rocks throughout, except for "Redbone," which is a different groove from the other songs in the package. The vocals had a tinge of Melanie Safka (really) being backed up by Oingo Boingo, or...? There isn't a song on this album that didn't impress me. A great compilation of tunes and superb recording work by Scott Sanders and Perry Robertson.

I am listening to the CD again and tapping my feet as I type in rhythm...

Keep on keepin on Kelly!

Peace!

Review of The Light by Lei Lani in Virginia

Great CD. This struck me as a departure from the earlier albums, defintely more of a rock to this one. The acoustic numbers on this CD rock, as well. Drive is my roomate's favorite track on this disc. Works great when you're on the interstate, cruising. Strong Girl is the first 'anthem' on the disc. I kept playing it over and over... Kelly's vocals are spectacular. Then I heard the last track ... wow. With a Capital W. Wow. Say yes to life. This song brings me up when I'm down, keeps me up when I'm happy, and is now my new "wear the plastic off the CD out on this track" song. This whole CD is a great journey, that stays in the CD player of my truck. Thanks for another great CD.

Got this great Album last week from Kellys Lot. Finally I now have the time to listen to it, and write a review. :-)

I know Kelly's Lot's music for almost 2 years, since Tom from LeverAgency pointed me to their myspace-site. I can only say: "Wow. What a great band"! This Band has energy and plays great Rock'n'Blues.

Let me first list the Bandmembers:
Vocals: Kelly Zirbes
Guitars: Perry Robertson
Saxophone and Clarinet: Bill Johnston
Guitars: Rob Zucca
Bass: Mark Drews
Drums: Sebastian Sheehan
Guitar (Drive): Scott Sanders
Harmonica (The Light): Linda Moss
harmonica (Tired): Gary Seagrove

The album starts with a smokin Rocker called Drive: I also immediately was starting to rock on my chair. Pure Energy of Singer Kelly Zirbes. A really fine blend of Rockguitar with Sax-player Bill Johnston during the chorus. A perfect start for the cd. Put your sunglasses on :-)

Second Song is Strong Girl, this time a little bit slower Rocker. Kelly is now showing more of her great singing skills. I love it when she varies her voice during a song. It switches from low voice to higher but very melodic and clear vocals.

Just Before I started to think that this will be a pure Rockalbum, they put song three Unsure on their cd. :-) The song starts very slow with electric guitar accompanied by Bill Johnston's Clarinet, and ends into a great Rockin Final. This is a very good example of their great skills in songwriting. The blending of Kelly's voice with Bill Johnston's Clarinet is fantastic. I am sure, this song played live will surprise everyone :-)

Next song is Green Toads which starts with an acoustic set, but... they will not make you to forget to rock. :-) Another great example of their fantastic songwriter skills. A song with many surprises. Switches from slower to moderate rockin parts. Last time I heard such a songwriting I was listening to a Led Zeppelin album. But don't misunderstand me, both bands are very different.

Redbone is a very relaxed song. Kelly's Lot is mixing swing with some blues, Rock and Jazz. A very fine song. Another great example of writing songs with musical surprises in it.

Now the titletrack The Light. Back to smokin Rock meets the Boogie'n'Blues.
This time with Linda Moss as guest Harmonica. Linda's visit is superb.

Next song is Tired. A superb Blues song with their second guest at the harmonica: Gary Seagrove. Love to hear them playing the blues, and what energy!! Gary is playing a fantastic Harmonica solo. Also Perry shows everybody his skills in playing a great bluesguitar solo.

Nobody here but me is a slow Rock song. Another great example of great songwriting skills.

Fair is another great example of mixing an acoustic set with Rock.

The last song of this cd is Say yes to life, my Opinion: a Hit. Me, you, and everybody will love this song.

My Rating:
"Say yessss" to this cd. :-)

After listening to this cd for the first time, I said: Wow. I've listened to many thousands of albums during my life, but only very few albums surprised me as much as this one. This album is draggin me to listen to it again and again.
Everytime I find something new or a surprising switch. The songwriting is fantastic. And Kelly Zirbes's voice is pure energy.
Only thing i am thinking about is: I want to see Kelly's Lot live.
I am sure that this Band and this album will be successful in Europe.
