Life
And Hope Are 4 Letter Words
I Barely slept last night... Just as my band mates. We couldn't help but
to think about what just happened while filming the next YFE TV. We wanted
to give some news and show more of the new studio...We spoke nicely about what
we are doing, trying to portrait our daily struggles to touch the essence of
our art and the real bottom of our essence with nice words, nice smiles and
trying to make it seem as if nothing is too overwhelming. Then a spark ruined
everything and gave life to something so much truer, so much more liberating
and so much more than pretty words.
That
spark came from a sudden nausea of making up excuses for being who we are and
trying to be what we think others expect. It burned our attractive speeches and
inflamed a passion for expressing the true feelings that are waking us after a
short night of dreaming. It drives our days with an aggressive determination; not
letting go of any occasion to make a difference in our own life first and for
anyone who would let us touch gently their hand...
"We have challenges in the studio... but it’s great and amazing."
"We
are doing music that we hope you'll like."
"We are doing things our way, but for
sure, we wouldn't want to offend the agonizing music industry.”
You've
heard these words over and over from our mouths and we were honestly saying
them, because we thought we had to be that way, we had to adapt ourselves to
our environment, our industry, to not be so different from people in our music
world...But as we were talking about the inspiration in the studio, the
challenges, the way we were working and our vision through the making of the
album; we suddenly felt these words weren't honest anymore. Our challenges
aren't pretty and easy; they are rising between us and our full accomplishment
every single day and every minute. Each one of us is continuously
challenged artistically and personally; compelling us to get our heads
out of our little belly buttons and fix our sight on the greater vision and
purpose. We'll fight the desire we have to find our security in your support,
our dear family and our encouraging friends; knowing you'll love the songs and
would not let us down... We won't find rest until the sound we create is pure,
completely bare of any superficiality, completely true and meaningful...
Following my last diary about human rights, I found the comment of Bob Thatcher
from California, very interesting:
"Growing up in the 1950’s, what you said is what I heard was the goal from
everybody: relatives, church, school, politicians, TV "news",
everybody. When the Hippies started to happen in the mid to late '60s; people
started to care about Planet Earth, lived on little, shared, and ignored a
persons color. All that mattered was if they were cool or not, I figured this
was what everybody said they were seeking. So I was shocked like a puppy
getting slapped for the first time--What!?! We were shunned, couldn't get
jobs or served in restaurants, disinformation abounded about us, and I couldn't
believe it. Now I see that EVERYBODY in power worships THE ECONOMY."
The economy is the ruler of the freedom, right?
We need
to fit with the industry to make money, to survive, to have a chance to BE? What is the point of being an
artist or a band, if you never get a chance to be heard and have
"success"? To which extent do we have to prostitute? And
who decides if you are "cool" or not? Is it "cool" to
voluntarily show ourselves as not having all the answers; struggling with
finding the strength of being completely true and finding it hard to always be
whole in our passion? Is it "economically productive" to take
the time to film a condolences video for the family of a young Japanese fan?
Is it insane to declare that we won't obey the rules of the market we evolve in
if it slightly gets us away from our vision? Well, insane or not,
productive or not, cool or not; that is Your Favorite Enemies and we won't
apologize anymore.
More than ever, we want to be just like Nobuko with her boldness when she says “I
am speaking my thoughts, opinions …did not mean to, but I am a bull in the
China shop.” We won't be shameful of being bulls anymore... stopping to be
sorry for making noise and breaking useless, but nicely made and arranged
rules; just like the China that no one would use, because it is so pretty.
Our
Japanese brother who had passed away last week, was involved with the Amnesty
International group of his region; he was standing for human rights. There was
nothing pretty about filming a video to encourage his friends of
Amnesty...young people devastated by a human tragedy. We felt like bulls in a
china shop... such a fragile situation and what about talking to his parents…people
we never met...people already so hurt. We felt like bulls, so unfit, but our
hearts had to speak out, our hands had to reach out to offer the best we could;
to give them what we have received; compassion, love, understanding, openness,
friendship….and if THAT was to make a difference? What if THAT was our last
chance to be heard or THIS diary was my last chance to talk to you?
I would
want to make sure no words would be useless and I would want to pour everything
I have and everything I am one last time…To tell you that there is no better
life than when we go to the deepest and beyond... when we are true and real to
the extreme... when we let down all the armour to feel the brisk breeze on our bare
skin, whistling through the hair of our arms that are lifted high; ready to
embrace the moment...when we scream our rage, when we cast our darkness away, or
when we break our chains to actively open and see what is behind the curtain. There
are small words we have to grasp on with two hands and never let go of them:
Life and Hope.
We are a band with a vision. We are people with tons of struggles and
paradox. We are following our dreams and pushing our passion to the
extreme. We love you more than you can imagine. We are Your Favorite
Enemies and won't be sorry about who we are.

a window on a million colour dreams
This week, Your Favorite Enemies is lifting a voice, one in a million, one that will hopefully be heard, one that will hopefully be followed by a million more, a voice declaring that Human Rights are for all and it’s worth fighting for. For many years, we have taken every occasion that we get to speak our minds and hearts about issues like violence, racism, discrimination and also to seed in our generation a new revelation of the words; "hope", "passion" and "compassion.”
We are very aware that the music industry has been guilty of using causes as a tool to boost the name and reputation of their artists too many times. It pays off to be seen handing a bowl of rice to a starving African citizen. In a way, I am sure that any non-profit organization would see this as a win-win situation; they all need exposure in order to reach out to a population that is numb and so self-centered. It is not in my nature to want to see sufferance and disasters... I prefer, by far, living my little life dancing around a pot of gold with the lucky charm guy under a rainbow that never sees rain. It’s in our nature to be blind to what is choking and what calls us to quit our comfort and enter into action...even if this action would be only to cry for the victims.
61 years ago, after witnessing the horror of war motivated by the human fear of difference and an everlasting will to overpower, men and women of many nations elaborated a document that would call for every person and every government to bring back humanity to all people…with no exceptions….The Universal Declaration for Human Rights. More than a piece of paper, this document is still today, a portrait of the rights and responsibilities we should all have and should fight for. But what does it mean in our everyday life? Are we really free? Are we really proactive enough to make people around us free?
In some countries, these fundamental rights are ridiculed...prisoners are killed with no proper trial, kids with no access to school, entire populations are kicked out of their homes, people working in slavery…Yeah...still today and it’s close to me, close to you. One person is bullied and loses the freedom to go around school without the fear of being beaten or scorned...one person is denied the right to share his or her mind... one person is so lonely...so sad, that their prison is made of bedroom walls...
I want to ask you one thing... Look at your life and tell me how your freedom and your rights can be better. Look around and tell me how you can help others to get their rights respected and honoured in their freedom. Open the window of your humanity and talk to me about the colours you can see... tell me that the world is not black and white and that we can altogether dream in a million colours...

DUSTING A
DREAM
It’s an honour to have this
opportunity to share with you this week!! A Tribune that Jeff takes
in your life every week; motivated not only by what happens here, or
by the messages, but also by his everyday life. It’s his daily choice
to die to himself in order to give life to something bigger; something
that’s carried at your feet to testify how amazing you are. It’s
a privilege to be with you to feed this treasure we are building all
together!
This week, like you have seen
on Twitter, “THA YFE CREW” came to the church to help with the great
clean up that had to be done!! For the past weeks, there had been some
of major renovations; leaving behind lots of dust and dirt, reminding
us of all the hard and passionate work that has been relentlessly done
here.
It’s been a colorful fresco
to see everyone’s joy and excitement getting their hands at it, expressing
their own reason to live… A dream revealed through what lives within.
At first sight, chores may not have been something very fun or gratifying
to do, but with the vision of building something greater than us, a
dream begins to breathe and grow through the decisions taken by every
single one of us on a daily basis…Way beyond our actions, way bigger
than this huge building!
It’s not about personal
ambitions or a way to feed our ego simply reflecting our insecurities,
it’s about letting the dream and the vision prevail on our individual
reality… feeding it would only be building another tour that deprives
us from each others’ love. Opening our doors and giving access to
who we are; gives birth to this new reality colored by a vision, by
a dream that reminds us of how precious is the fruit of our relationships.
This is what we’ve witnessed over the past weeks at the church. Our
brothers, our sisters, all accomplishing numerous tasks, cleaning up,
painting, moving heavy furniture, climbing 25 foot ladders to access
stained glass windows, sweeping the great hall, etc. All of that with
a heart filled with joy and passion! We realized that what was amazingly
huge was not the church… What is greater than anything is what lives
inside of us! Even the biggest church on earth can not contain this!
That is what we see through
what we share with you! Seeing you building those relationships; not
only with us, but with people coming from all around the world. Let’s
leave the echoes of the past behind, those casting a shadow over the
diamonds living within you… free the melody of your true identity…
This soundtrack; composed by every single one of you is our greatest
inspiration!
What are your dreams? Often
our dreams are cast away by how we see ourselves; they might be buried
under our fears and doubts… True love blows away the dust and dirt
revealing who we are and the inspiration for tomorrow!!
Your brothers!
Sef, Moose and Ben

From victims to survivors, from abusers to world changers...
By Miss Isabel Japanese / German / Spanish / French / Italian
My dear friends...my heart-linked brothers and sisters...
I knew the subject of violence against women is a sensitive one; provoking multiple reactions... I knew some people would read and just stay silent...stirring old bad memories or fresh shivering feelings all by your self with your computer screen reflecting the tears. I was pretty confident no one would stand up FOR violence as a good way to control relationships and get a message through. I would have been really surprised to see a comment from a violent person standing up and admitting or explaining their actions. It’s probably you who’s reading this; are either all non-violent or are stuck in a violent cycle, yet you somehow know deep inside it makes no sense. If only you could get out of it before anyone confronts you... So, If you are a violent man; I want to join my voice with Amanda and tell you "STOP BEATING AND ABUSING OUR WOMEN"!
My sister, when I read your story; I cried. To understand your pain, how you've been broken...your bones, your soul, your self esteem, your trust in your future... and when I read your words "I still call myself a victim, because I don't think I have earned the right to be a survivor, not yet.” GOSH! NO! I am sorry; I don't accept that... not for you my sister, because you don't have to earn the right to be a survivor. You've accepted way too much already; hoping to "earn" love, respect and attention... You ARE a survivor; I give you the title! IT’S GIVEN! Not earned... We all deserve respect, honour, love, equality and as Yasmin says; "Everyone gets the same opportunity in life." We deserve to see ourselves as amazing people who are walking through this life like champions! We do have power over our lives to walk as champions and survivors; if we know our worth...Nobuko said it right: "Believing lies of -NO worth -make people so powerless ... I knew you would share your stories and it would have an impact on me…To know you are suffering...that you've been hurt like Erin on the verge of physical death... that you are still carrying scars today and you struggle to find your self worthy after the storm... I just hope you are out of it and that you would never again live such an awful cycle...
Mica shared her story and something she said hit me:
"I was a victim of mental, physical and sexual abuse. I've been trying to rebuild myself since. Everyday is a struggle to forget it and move on, and see that not everyone will do it. It took years to understand that it wasn't my fault and that I can't get an explanation for it. Sometimes there isn't one."
Is it possible to forget? Is it really what we need to aim” for? Is it possible to heal and move on without forgetting, but instead feeding our self with the truth; “I have survived violence; I don't deserve to be a victim of this man. I am worthy of living an amazing life full of joy, living it with people that consider me as equal, respected, loved and encouraged to be myself without constantly being pressured to change.
Finding explanations might be like a bottomless pit and forgetting might be like denying reality.” So, I want to encourage you my sisters to look ahead...there is a future for you as there is a present. Right now you are reading this blog and through this simple action; you are working at building yourself!
Let's believe that our life is designed for greatness and anything less than that is not for us... So we shouldn't hold on to it! Anything that is dragging us down; we have to confront it, fight it and discard it from our lives. May it be fear, insecurity or people that are treating us like shit and of course any type of violence.
My brothers, you are amazing men, full of potential and designed for a wonderful destiny. You have in you a power to change the world and a natural leadership that can inspire a generation. I encourage you to see women as they are: your best partner to make of this world, or YOUR world a beautiful garden where you can live fully, to think about stuff you wouldn't think of naturally, to help you, to love you, encourage you, push you further...your best partner to remind you that men and women are designed to be complete and happy for a life that is worth living. My brother, I ask you to stand and lift your voice against violence in your own life and in the life of everyone you meet and live with...Don't accept ANY form of violence and never hesitate to say something!!! Violence is EVERYONE'S BUSINESS! WE do need you; as you guys need us...It’s why we call ourselves a family.
I love you all and I am with you...with your tears and your victories!
Miss Isabel
