What is Pinky violence? It's a line of sexy, action-exploitation thrillers begun in the late sixties in Japan. These films featured female yakuzas and girl boss guerillas duking it out for their freedom, their pride and their own piece of the pie. This electrifying genre mixed titillation with social commentary, predating its closest American and European counterparts by several years. These groundbreaking films continue to influence some of cinema's most celebrated directors, like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Takashi Miike. Please join us for this exclusive exhibit of Japanese Exploitation Rarities!
The Art of Pinky Violence (Original Movie Posters) On Exhibit: November 16 through November 30, 2009 (…click the pic to view and purchase the art…)
To View and Purchase the Artwork from this Exhibit, Please Visit: http://www.hyaenagallery.com/pinkyviolence.html
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 21st 8pm to Midnight
Always FREE ADMISSION All posters are the original Japanese release posters produced by Toei, and displayed in the theater lobbies throughout Japan. Since films in the Pinky Violence genre were considered adult movies, they were only shown in adult movie theaters (the equivalent of the American grindhouse) in Tokyo and Osaka, with a mere handful of additional theaters outside these two major metropolitan cities (in places like Fukokua, Yokohama, Hiroshima and Okinawa). As a result, they were not wild posted like movie posters for commercial releases, and the printed quantities were likely in the hundreds, rather than the thousands. Many of these were destroyed as part of the national recycle program shortly after their initial release.
When guest curator Matt Kennedy first began collecting these posters in the early 1990's, he sought to collect one of each poster for each Pinky Violence film released. After realizing the rarity of these collectibles he opted to buy multiples, and eventually began buying every poster he could find of films in the Pinky Violence genre. Multiple trips back and forth to Japan included shopping sprees at every poster and memorabilia shop in Tokyo, and his exhaustive search yielded a collection of posters, lobby cards and press books that exceeded any collection in Japan. When licensing the films for release in the US & Canada, it became evident that Kennedy's collection included posters not present in the Toei archive, the studio that had produced the films originally. It is possible that fewer than a dozen of some of these posters are still in existence, and none in such pristine, archival condition as those exhibited in this show.
All the posters in this show have been linen-backed for conservation purposes. This is an expensive archival process that yields museum-quality presentation. The posters in this show were linen-backed by Poster Mountain, the exclusive conservator of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Only the finest cotton canvas available, grade "A", 12oz., raw, unbleached canvas imported from .... India.... has been used for mounting, with a white, machine-made Japanese paper called MASA sandwiched between the poster and the canvas. This additional layer helps to give the mount more body, while also providing a smooth surface for the poster. A proprietary mixtures of wheat paste, synthetic pastes, methyl cellulose, and PVA (Poly Vinyl Acetate) has been used to matte the posters on the linen. These pastes are archival and at the very forefront of preservation technology. They will not yellow over time and they remain soluble in water, but will not break down completely, making the clean up of old mounting paste much less dangerous to the artwork.

Who is…The Creep? Spawned from the depths of the Inland Empire, in between two beautifully toxic bodies of water (Lake Elsinore and the Salton Sea), The Creep grew up a cartoon & horror movie junkie and all-around fan of the stranger things in life…and his work reflects that. With no art schooling beyond a high school career, he decided to go the “lone wolf” outsider artist route. So here he is today, a vigilante lowbrow artist on a mission from God or Satan. I can’t remember. If you like the Munsters, rock & roll, rat rods, 50s & 60s camp and just generally F’d up things, then enjoy.
With this exhibit, we’ve invited The Creep back to celebrate our mutual admiration for the weird world and work of Mr. Jack T. Chick, a man so ingrained in our pop culture you probably don’t even realize it…yet. Get off your couches and dig…
“Personal Hell” new art by Chris “The Creep” Densmore
On Exhibit: October 1 through ..October 15, 2008.. (…click the pic to view and purchase the art…)
To View and Purchase the Artwork from this Exhibit, Please Visit: http://www.hyaenagallery.com/thecreep.html
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 3rd 8pm to Midnight
Always FREE ADMISSION Have you ever been out in public and been approached by a smiling person who, without saying a word, hands you a little booklet with a cartoon on the cover? As they slink off you open it up to see that what they have given you is filled with religious and moral stories illustrated with cartoons. Your first reaction is "Why me? Do I look like I need saving? Do I emanate evil?" But once you get past the fact that this person singled you out as being in league with the Devil himself, you realize these booklets are great!
My "Personal Hell" show is inspired by these tracts and their holier than thou creator, Jack T. Chick. Influenced by Chick's artistic and evangelistic approach, I have attempted to combine his cute, seemingly innocuous illustrative style with my own beliefs concerning a contradictory world of smiling faces and hidden evil. Come sin with me. - Creep

I can’t imagine what it was like growing up in the Philbin household. Clockwork ..Orange.. style forced viewings of Monty Python coupled with memorization sessions of Mad Magazine? Add a little beer and Anime, perhaps? Whatever the case, that family has spewed forth two of my favorite artists in the form of Big Tasty and Kat Philbin. If you are familiar with Hyaena then you will recognize Big Tasty from out monthly $20 Doodle event. Now you can see the other side of his art in full glory. Kat may be newer to you but she is no stranger to these gallery walls. It is an honor to have them both exhibiting here together in an event that we can only call… Sibling Rivalry the art of Kat Philbin and Big Tasty
On Exhibit: July 16 through July 31, 2009 (…click the pic to view and purchase the art…)
To View and Purchase the Artwork from this Exhibit, Please Visit: Big Tasty: http://www.hyaenagallery.com/bigtastyexhibit.html
Kat Philbin: http://www.hyaenagallery.com/katphilbin.html
Opening Reception: Friday, July 18th 8pm to midnight
Always FREE ADMISSION
When Big Tasty sets pen to paper, it is difficult not to think of the luminaries of underground art such as R. Crumb and Basil Wolverton. In their bold tradition, there is a lack of censor and a fearlessness inherent within everything he creates. His work is a channeling of pure subconscious that he unashamedly reveals to the world.
Kat Philbin is the uber-talented sister of Big Tasty. A graduate of Missouri State University with a B.S. in Fashion Design, Kat garners well deserved attention and accolades for the surreal perspective she celebrates in her artwork. Her work balances sweetness with the sublime and fuses charm with a memorable, often darker, humor.
Together, both Tasty and Kat exemplify an artistic family with a brilliantly skewed vision.
Come watch them throw down in classic "Mom likes me best" Philbin sibling rivalry style!!

Another Hyaena favorite returns to our walls with a show that will blow you away. It’s been a year since his last collection and his new paintings definitely take everything up a few notches. We are exteremly proud to present… New Artwork by Clint Carney
On Exhibit: July 1 through July 15, 2008 (…click the pic to view and purchase the art…)
To View and Purchase the Artwork from this Exhibit, Please Visit: http://www.hyaenagallery.com/clintcarney.html
Opening Reception: Friday, July 3 8pm to Midnight
Always FREE ADMISSION Clint Carney writes music, paints, and excels at every creative endeavor he undertakes. A favorite among the gothic / industrial / darkwave scene, he is the singer / song-writer for the bands SYSTEM SYN (Metropolis Records) and FAKE (Static Sky Records). He also plays keyboards for the band IMPERATIVEREACTION (Metropolis Records).
Clint's artwork depicts a brutal fantasy world
where we become the personification of demons, body parts are interchangeable, and self mutilation is both our punishment and our redemption. It's dark, surrealistic horror art that lies somewhere between ManRay, Hans Bellmer, and the Black Dahlia murder.
This is Clint Carney's second solo exhibit
with Hyaena Gallery. Come see why Clint is considered one of the most exciting rising stars within the true Dark Art Scene.

From sweet to subversive, his artwork encompasses the very essence of renegade creativity…Zap Comics, Mad Magazine? This is Tasty’s world. Big Tasty has worked for Troma studios alongside Lloyd Kaufman and has had his artwork featured on the albums and inserts of many random bands. He appeared as a mime once in a video with Maynard from Tool. He is the most fascinating individual you will ever meet…and he’s got a wealth of talent to share. Come get some! For over three years, Hyaena has made it’s mark on the Dark Art scene. It’s recently been said that we are the premiere gallery for collectors of Macabre Art. Need proof? Just check out this show… The Art
Of Erick De La Vega
June 16 through June 30, 2009 (…click the pic to view and purchase the art…)
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 20 8pm to Midnight
Erick De La Vega is a painter, sculptor, photographer, and make-up FX artist. Concentrating primarily on his special effects work for the past 15 years, Erick has a host of project credits under his belt throughout the film and television industry (Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, Angel TV series, Jeepers Creepers, Blade II, Batman Dead End, & Willard). His fine art paintings draw upon that work experience and showcase the ease of realism he achieves with both airbrushed and traditional brushed acrylics. Trained at the New World School of the Arts and the Art Institute of Pittsburg, Erick’s work is influenced by the modern masters of dark, fantasy art like Frank Frazetta, Wayne Barlow, and H.R. Giger, as well as a mixture of his own Catholic upbringing and his obsession with monsters and creatures. De La Vega’s painted creations are otherworldly and yet eerily familiar. They expose the viewer to a horrific beauty that potentially awaits at the end of every darkened passageway. They are fearsomely compelling. (…click the pic to view and purchase the art…)

There’s a proud tradition, here at Hyaena, of highlighting emerging artists and pushing them to the forefront. We’re kicking off this month with a young artist that truly embodies the spirit this gallery. He’s talented, incredibly driven, and continually challenges himself. Expect to see more and bigger things from him in the future… but for now, we are extremely excited to present: Land of Nowhere artwork by David Cook
June 1 through June 15, 2009 (…click the pic to view and purchase the art…)
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 6 8pm to Midnight
In the last two years, David Cook has made quite an impression on the Southern California art scene. Known for his incredibly detailed and accomplished work in graphite, as well as the bright color palette in his acrylic paintings, he has shown regularly throughout the region. David’s unique approach to classic surrealism combines elements of Lowbrow and engages the viewer with its accessibility. His symbolism, manifest through a cavalcade of recurring characters, discusses aspects of death, religion, faith, & happiness and how we all relate to and deal with these complex elements of life.
“Land of Nowhere,” David’s first solo show at Hyaena gallery, is an exploration of angst, yet the art takes us in an atypical direction. In life there is often so much fear, alienation, and uncertainty that it is very easy to lash out in frustration. David, however, chooses a rebellious path and instead offers us solace. The Land of Nowhere, a safe, strange environment where the trees are alive, weeds sooth, and the bubbles comfort in an enveloping warmth. This is the place where all of us weirdos, misfits, and outcasts are welcome. A place where we can go to escape society and feel normal.

A Hyaena favorite returns to the gallery with his signature style and a celebration of all things dark and beautiful. Vampires + Gothic Lolita = Do Not Miss
Vampyrically Speaking New Artwork by Rick “Dienzo” Blanco

Saturday, May 16 8pm to Midnight
Always FREE ADMISSION Rick "Dienzo" Blanco is a Los Angeles area artist whose career in commercial art as an award-winning designer spans over 15 years. His paintings of sinister little characters are meant to intrigue, entice and perhaps cause a bit of anxiety.
This collection of over 20 new original paintings focuses on the ever-fascinating Vampire mythos and brings to life his unique take on big-eyed characters that drip murky streams of mascara, lounge in satiated conceit, or seductively prowl in their quest for blood. Influenced by iconic references of popular culture throughout his life, Dienzo manages to fuse diverse eras and styles into a series of accessible characters and vignettes that form a visual language of vampirism.
Unique to this show is his collaboration with Gothic Lolita maven, La Carmina. He not only incorporated fashions created by the designer into some of his works, but painted one of Carmina herself!
