Hello!
Christmas is just around the corner (which means you don't have long left to get your early bird tickets!) and here at BCHQ we're brimming over with festive joy. As it's the season of goodwill and all that, we've got some great festival freebies to share with you, including some DJ action from Big Chill Radio, more exclusive Campfire Sessions videos, a new download single from Lamb's Lou Rhodes and some great videos from Rizla's Invisible Players.
Meanwhile, we're getting well and truly stuck into our plans for 2010 and seem to be spending more and more time in a strangely quiet (and wet) field in the Malvern Hills, working out just what's going to be going where... but more news on this in the New Year!
We'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate the latest additions to the BC fold, at our new bar in Bristol, for beating off some fierce competition and winning Venue magazine's Top Banana award for 'Best Bar in Bristol'. Not bad considering they only opened the doors in October!..
We'll be back in the New Year. We hope you have a great festive season!
Lots of love,
The team at BCHQ.

Two weeks left to get your early bird tickets!
Don't forget you've only got two weeks left to buy your Big Chill 2010 tickets at 2009 prices, before the prices go up on January 1st, 2010. We're also closing both the Deposit Scheme and Payment Plan on December 31st, so if you'd like to spread the cost of your tickets, don't delay! Click here to buy your tickets. For more info about ticket prices and payment options please scroll down or click here...

Katrina wins the Lifetime Achievement Award
Our co-founder and creative director, Katrina Larkin, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Festival Awards 2009, by longtime Big Chill friend, Coldcut's Matt Black. The award was given to mark Katrina's outstanding contribution to both the UK and international festival market, and in recognition of her position as a woman on the top tier of an industry largely dominated by men. Find out more here.
Here at BCHQ, we'd like to extend our personal congratulations to Katrina and raise a glass to the next fifteen years!

Hello!

The clocks have gone back, the evenings are drawing in and while it seems like an awfully long time since we were all running around our beautiful valley in the Herefordshire countryside, rest assured that here at BCHQ we're hard at work planning next year's festival and it's already shaping up to be very special indeed. We're itching to spill the beans and tell you more, but we've been sworn to secrecy for now. But, we can officially reveal that tickets for The Big Chill 2010 will go on sale at 9am on Wednesday 28th October - hurrah! Early bird tickets will be available at the 2009 price of £145 until December 31st, and once again there's a deposit scheme if you want to spread the cost of your tickets. The year is 2018. The apocalypse has happened. Zombies rule the world. Human beings are kept only for food (and sometimes entertainment). But old habits die hard, so once a year the zombies still hold a music festival and this year at The Big Chill we will be recreating this ghastly event. With the Zombie King Noel Fielding presiding over proceedings, this is your call to come and join the fundead!

On Thursday the 6th of August we will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest amount of zombies caught on camera, when shooting begins on the upcoming Film4 and Warp Film's production, 'I Spit On Your Rave'. In order to take part in these events you'll have to be a Big Chill ticket holder and look like one of the undead. We'd love for everyone to arrive as a zombie, but if you don't have time to get your make-up and gear together, come to our Zombification Stations at the arena entrances and get undeaded!

Make-up stations will be open all-day, starting as soon as festival goers start to arrive and set up camp. Once the entertainment area opens at 3pm, you'll only to be able to get into the Open Air Stage field if you're zombiefied. White face make-up and a bit of fake blood will do, but we'd love it if you could go the whole hog as suggested below. There will be zombie-themed DJ sets and other entertainment to keep you in the mood.

If you're London and don't know how you're getting to the festival, why not join us at The Big Chill House or Bar and get on the Zombie Bus? We'll be meeting at 11am on Thursday morning for breakfast and a drink, as well as your all important zombie makeover. See here for more info.

At 7pm we'll film the highlight of the zombie festival, 'The Running Feast'. This is where we need the biggest possible zombie crowd so we can beat that world record! The crowd will be greeted by their Zombie King, Noel Fielding. This will  be staged as a live event, with music from Toddla T and other special guests. Think 'It's a Knockout' meets 'The Running Man', with specially 'captured' humans  chased through an obstacle course by zombies hungry for brains... Gory fun for the whole post-nuclear family!

After this, zombies will be especially welcome at British Sea Power's live accompaniment of 'Man of Arran' ('Zombie of Arran'?)  and 'Winged Migration'. Then there's more undead fun with zombie movies from from dusk till dawn in the Film4 Cinema Tent, featuring two of the '...Dead' films by zombie movie legend George A. Romero, John Carpenter's haunting 'The Fog' and Sam Raimi's cult horror-comedy classic, 'Evil Dead II'. And if you feel like strutting your undead stuff, you can shuffle over to the zombie disco in Big Chill Nights.

Throughout the weekend smaller events will be taking place, including a zombie battle of the bands, zombie weddings and a zombie rave. If you want to take part in any of these events let us know, either by mailing us at ispitonyourrave@warpfilms.com, or come and say hello at our Zombie HQ by the Film4 Cinema Tent.

Zombies will also be particularly welcome at the Dereliction Drive-In, a post-apocalyptic drive-in cinema where you can join graffiti gurus Pete Fowler and Kid 30 in pimping your undead ride. Chill out to mixes from beyond the grave from Monsterism, Hexstatic and Osymyso, or add your own ghoulish sounds to the mix with our AudioBoo crew.

The culmination of the weekend's life and death antics with be the ceremonial burning of the zombie on Sunday night - a 20m wooden effigy of living death itself, brought to us by The World Famous, the pyrotechnic team behind last year's Big Warm finale.

Some tips for perfecting that zombie look...

Make-up

Zombies are dead and lets face it, they're not getting any better. Pasty white make-up and the remnants of their last (human) meal are a good start. Ketchup, red face-paint and lipstick can all help add that ghoulish garnish of someone else's blood. Red or black eyeliner helps that thousand yard stare. If you want to get more involved, try using a little liquid latex to get some grisly wounds or coloured contact lenses to create that undead glare.

For more detailed make-up tips, please click here.

Costume

Maybe you got some of your dinner on your shirt, maybe your lunch fought back, either way, most zombies are more likely to turn stomachs than heads. Traditionally blood, mud and tears are the order of the day. However, not all Zombies are content to live in the clothes they died in - a zombie fashion sense has survived and if you fancy it, come and watch or even take part in our zombie fashion show.

Behaviour

Quick zombies... slow zombies... it takes all sorts in this crazy post-apocalyptic world! Go 'old school' and have a slack jawed shamble or shake off that rigor mortis, grab a beer and have a good old moan for 'Brrrrrraaaaains'. King Noel and his court jesters will be putting the zombie crowd through their paces (zombie Mexican wave anyone?), so be prepared to throw your limbs (and anyone else's you might have scavenged along the way) in the air for the biggest beyond the grave chiller of the year!

If you’ve already bought your ticket, simply pop into the pub and show them your festival ticket and claim your £30 voucher…no worries!

Acclaimed DJs from the festival and burgeoning Bristol scene will provide the soundtrack in this bar designed with The Big Chill vibe in mind – a friendly space with eye-catching artwork, original décor and an attention to comfort.

The bar will be open day and night, offering easy to share tapas dishes and guest menus from the festival’s reputed food stalls, alongside classic cocktails, beers, local ciders and a keenly researched wine list.

Katrina Larkin, co-founder of the Big Chill said:

“It’s not a new home for Big Chill really, it’s more providing a roof for the many Big Chill artists and chillers from Bristol all year round. Plus it’s a lot closer for us than the London bars after a hard day in our festival fields”.

Hello!

Oh my gosh, the summer's here! With just five weeks to go until this year's Big Chill, it's action stations here at HQ. We've got even more names to announce this month, as well as proudly unveiling a very special guest to open this year's festival. We'll be getting down to some of the nitty gritty with travel info and our handy camping checklist to help you get ready for the weekend. We've also compiled a handy 14 page guide to the festival, featuring info about artists and some of the great things taking place this year - click here to download your copy now! Budding musicians might like to read on to find out more about a great opportunity to get their photo taken by Rankin and take to the stage to perform at this year's festival, whilst Birmingham based Chillers can look forward to a very special pre-festival warm-up party this weekend, featuring none other than AV maestros and BC favourites, Hexstatic.

Enjoy the sunshine!
Lots of love,
The team at Big Chill HQ.

Big Chill hero to open this year's festival

If there's one festival we feel inspired by, it's Woodstock. Forty years on, we are honoured that the creator of Woodstock Fest. 69, Michael Lang, is coming to The Big Chill. We'll be opening the Words In Motion tent on the Thursday evening and you'll be able to meet the man himself in a special Q&A session here. There will also be a chance for you to watch a 40th anniversary screening of the film, Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music. Speaking about Woodstock 1969 in his new book 'Woodstock Experience', Michael Lang had this to say;

'Eight months before the event, I had a dream. I was on a stage looking out at a sea of people, and I knew that was coming. I didn't have the specifics of it, but I had the end results. I just followed that.'

Woodstock is seen as the perfect celebration of the 60's peace and love movement, an ideal which we hold dear and which has helped define the ethos of The Big Chill these past 15 years.

Questions, questions, questions...
Wondering how you're going to get to this year's Big Chill? Then wonder no more, as you can find lots of handy travel info located here
on our website, whether you're travelling by car, train, coach or bicycle. The Lift-Share Forum is also back in business, so why not pick up a passenger (or hitch a lift) and you could save money, as well as make some new friends!

Whether you're a seasoned Chiller, or a fresh faced newbie, there's nothing worse than finding yourself in a field miles from home, without your favourite teddy bear, or some other essential bit of camping kit. Believe us, we've learnt the hardway. To help you avoid any such disasters, please check out our Camping Checklist for advice on what to bring.

Got another festival question? Chances are it's been asked before, so please take a look through our Frequently Asked Questions to see if you can find the answer to what's troubling you... if you can't, get in touch.

I Spit On Your Rave - Official Website

Our ghastly plan with Film4 and Warp Films continues to unfold as the official website goes live. Get a feel for your inner zombie by watching Roadtrip, a short teaser to help get you thinking outside the grave.

As well as the mass zombie event on Thursday evening, there'll be loads of other ghoulish activities taking place, including an undead fashion show, a zombie battle of the bands, a zombie pet show and of course, a zombie rave, where you can get down with your dead-self. Entertaining fellow Big Chill zombies on the Thursday evening will be Toddla T, who has been confirmed as our first guest zombie... and there are more special guest zombies to be announced very soon! Get a taste of what's going on in Toddla's brain at the moment by downloading this exclusive mix he sent us to share with you.

We'll be sending out more detailed instructions for the undead hoards shortly, telling you everything you need to know, such as:

* Where to gather with your zombie brethren
* Inside info on which bits will be shooting where and when
* What the audio and visual cues will be
* How to move when you are dead
* And in which direction you should be shuffling

Get your hideous make-up and costume ready, reveal your inner zombie and arrive in costume. Surprise us and catch the eye of our undead cameras as we'll be looking for zombies as they arrive at the box office and will carry on throughout the weekend. Or until everyone's dead.

New Art Trail artist and education programme for the Big Chill

For the second year in a row we've been awarded funding from the West Midlands Arts Council for our inspiring art commissions and education outreach. As well as Henry Krokatsis, artist Claire Morgan is now working with Art Trail curator Alice Sharp to create a unique site specific installation within the canopy of three oak trees, through suspending natural materials from umbrellas.
This year's local education programme consists of a series of exciting artist led workshops with Shane Solanki, Yoke and Zoom, Robert Rainbow, Small Change and Mischief Makers. The local workshops are currently taking place at Eastnor CE Primary School, Ledbury Primary School, John Masefield High School and Hereford College of Arts.

The Big Chill, 257-259 Pentonville Road, King's Cross, London, N1 9NL

Big Chillers are to be given the opportunity of a lifetime at this year's festival. Photographer Rankin has announced that he will be calling on festival-goers to be part of his museum scale exhibition Rankin Live! a major photographic exhibition where he will take pictures of 1000 Britons through the summer in Brick Lane, London, and at The Big Chill.

After the grand opening of Rankin Live! in London on July 31st, the iconic photographer is heading down to Eastnor for two days. Festival-goers are invited to take part in his unique live and interactive exhibition concept and be shot as part of a live photo-shoot during the festival. With each picture costing only £50, Big Chillers can have their portrait taken by one of the world's top photographers and help raising funds for Oxfam. And if that isn't enough, The Big Chill and Rankin Live! have teamed up with MySpace to offer one musician or band the chance of a lifetime - festival tickets to The Big Chill, a shoot with Rankin and even a slot to play a half hour slot on Friday before Wonky Pop takeover The Coop!

Opening on July 1st at www.myspace.com/rankinlive, this is a money can't buy chance to get your mug made beautiful by the man who launch Dazed and Confused and shot the likes of U2, Jarvis Cocker, Madonna, Oasis, Verve and Bjork.

Rankin says: “I can’t think of a better festival to capture a sense of festival goers style and individuality - The Big Chill has the perfect atmosphere to capture some great images and embodies the same ethos of celebration and fun as the Rankin Live project We’re really looking forward to joining everyone at Eastnor this August.”
