Just another update,

Our song "Still Alive" from our debut album has just been picked up by Davenport and MTV for use on a TV commercial to be screened over the Australian and NZ summer.

So keep your eye's peeled and ears open for it over the next few months.

Sydney band TownHallSteps are beginning to see the fruits of their labour. The local lads will play shows in Australia and the United States to celebrate their brand new single “Ask For More.” The song comes from the band’s self-titled debut, which will hit stores on September 14.
The quintet began writing and touring in 2004, inspired by contemporary punk outfits Jimmy Eat World and The Get Up Kids. The momentum began to build, with the band earned support slots on tours with Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, The All American Rejects, and local acts like Kisschasy, Faker, and Gyroscope. In 2005 the band won the national final of the World Battle of the Bands, and headed to Hong Kong to compete against the best young acts on the international scene. In 2006 they released their debut EP, Breakdowns, which peaked at number 10 on the charts.
In 2008 TownHallSteps began to experiment with electronic sounds and strong beats in the vein of The Killers and Coldplay. Another EP, Disco, encapsulated the sound.
It’s been a long time coming, but the band’s debut album is almost here. The first single, “Ask For More” was written about a night out with the boys that’s interrupted by the appearance of a pretty girl.
“All of a sudden every guy will instinctively act different, trying to make the funniest joke to make her laugh, buying her drinks as if money is no issue and all these things to try and impress her,” drummer Ryan Lambert explained. “What most guys don’t usually realise is that girls see straight through this and after all their efforts, usually leaves the conversation with the same impression of these boys as she had when she entered”.

The band will play a couple of local shows this month before jetting to the United States. They’ll play iconic venues in Hollywood, Las Vegas, Santa Monica, and New York before jetting home for more Aussie gigs.

AccessAllAreas.net.au:
With a new album and already few singles currently doing well on the charts, are you guys at the happiest point now in your career?
Ryan: Yes, but at the same time the busiest..Doing this independently has been a great challenge for us but now we have seen the rewards I think it has made us very dedicated to see what the future brings for us.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: Is there a particular message that you hope listeners would take away from your new album?
Ryan: It’s a very heart filled album, each song represents a feeling or experience we have sheared during the time we were writing and recording this album.
We hope that any one who listens to it can connect with it in their own way as well.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: The songs on the new album sound dynamic, some more pop/rock and others have more electronic/dance beats. Which song stands out most to you?
Ryan: We all have different stand out songs between the 5 of us,The various styles on this album were all a natural progression for us, nothing was forced although some was a result of experimentation. But over all are all happy with the way every song on this album has turned out in the end.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: The song ‘Crisis’ features hip-hop artist, Torcha. What has inspired you guys to take on a hip-hop/rock sound?
Ryan: When we 1st wrote the music for this song almost 2 years ago, the idea of hip hop in the verses jumped out at us almost right away, about a year ago we met Torcha playing in his band ‘A broken silence’ the rest is history.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: ‘Disco’ and ‘Anywhere But Here’ feature more electronic/dance beats. Will the band continue with that style in the future?
Ryan: Yeah for sure, high energy electro pop/punk its still a bit part of what we want to do, it will not be leaving our set list any time soon.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: ‘The Direction’ stands out to me most, a little darker and the lyrics are interesting. Can you tell us more about this song?
Ryan: ‘The Direction’ is loosely based on the story and progression of the band and refers to experiences along the way. Listen closely you will see!

AccessAllAreas.net.au: The moment your new album was completed and when you played it back, was your reaction quite different from Breakdowns?
Ryan: When any band heres the final mixes of there new CD it is always exciting! We spent a year and a half recording this album so it was also as refreshing as it was exciting to have it completed!

AccessAllAreas.net.au: Was there more or less pressure to do well on the new album after the success you’ve had with Breakdowns?
Ryan: The exposure we had from breakdowns was amazing it seemed to bring us to a whole new level with a much bigger fan base, but I don’t think it brought more pressure into righting this album I think we were just so into writing this album were weren’t thinking about following up from breakdowns we were just exciting out brining out something new.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: In the video for ‘Disco’, it starts with you guys feeling nervous about going on stage. Does that happen in real life as well?
Ryan: Not any more, but if we had to play in a room full of girls in their underwear again I’m sure there would be a few butterflies!

AccessAllAreas.net.au: Which has been the most memorable gig you’ve had so far?
Ryan: I think we all have separate memorable gigs for different reasons but I guess playing the Sydney Ent Cent supporting Avril is something we would all look back on with great memories.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: You guys won the 2005 World Battle of the Bands. Can you take us back to that experience?
Ryan: It was help a great Sydney Venue called the Marquee (r.i.p), it went for weeks on end we got to the grand final and won. We flew all expenses paid to Hong Kong for a weekend played The World final which we didn’t win, but we had an amazing experience and something we are all proud we got to be a part of.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: You guys are taking your music to the US soon, what has inspired this move?
Ryan: This is something we have dreamt about doing for many years. We are happy with our new album and want to show case it to the US market. Although playing the Viper room & The Roxy in LA, Vegas and NYC will be a dream come true in its self.

AccessAllAreas.net.au: What do you guys hope to achieve in the next few years?
Ryan: That many people in Australia and people from other countries around the world will know our name and connect with at least one of our songs in some way.

Hey all,

Our Debut album is out in stores Australia and NZ wide from today! and if you live overseas then you can also get it on I Tunes world wide from today.

Your support in buying a copy would be greatly appreciated and would be supporting 100% Aussie Independent music.

We don't have a big label paying for everything like a lot of other bands around so all the money will go straight to us and will help us pay for our next album due out next year.

If you have heard the album we would love for you to leave a comment on our page telling us what you think :)

See you soon at a show

The debut LP from Sydney’s Town Hall Steps is a solid mix of catchy pop-rock laced with electronic elements and an energy best felt live. The album showcases the two sides to Town Hall Steps: the explosive electro-punk and the thoughtful soaring ballad.

The opening energy of Anywhere But Here gives listeners a taste for what they are in for. Combining a pop punk feel with electronic layering is a winning formula for Town Hall Steps. With this vibe, first single Disco is the strongest on the album. Picked up by Austereo, Nova and Channel V, Disco has all the makings of a great song: an intro that makes you want to dance, a catchy chorus and vivacity that never lags. It’s this energy that is Town Hall Steps biggest asset.

Slower tracks Holding On and The Direction showcase a more emotional Town Hall Steps. With the epic feel of a rock ballad, The Direction is musically beautiful and shows the band can tap into a more mature sound.

Ask For More has a pop sensibility that makes it a natural stand out; the explosion of drums in the chorus verges on joyous. From the opening synth to the last beat, Still Alive has an infectious 80’s vibe making it incredibly fun to listen to. Your Secret Dance’s underlying guitars are the best part of this track; the vocals strain throughout the chorus and the lyrics are cringe worthy in parts.

Pop track Jessie is simple but easily likeable, a far cry from the following track. Featuring guest hip hop artist Torcha, Crisis feels misplaced and doesn’t flow with the rest of the album. The hip hop verse combined with the intense chorus feels wrong and I’m left feeling confused as to why this track is included amongst so many other likeable and less forced songs.

Closing the album with Trouble Little Girl is an interesting choice. The track itself is beautiful, but for a band with so much energy, the placement at the end leaves the listener feeling a little flat when they could have walked away not being able to get a song out of their head.

Most importantly, the music on Town Hall Steps self titled LP is catchy, energetic and makes you want to dance. After years of hard work and dedication gigging around Australia, it’s now time for these Sydney boys to take their songs to the world.

Highlights: Disco, Ask For More, The Direction, Still Alive.
