Last night (Stocks On Second in Harrisburg) was quite possibly one of best Groove Jones gigs ever. Why, you ask? I have some ideas.

1. The people were into it... no need to convince... they were there to have a good time.

2. Positive energy... lots of it... like kids at play.

3. New blood... Dan Bergman on guitar. New/Old Blood Tom Mumma on saxes.

5. J.K. had his game on.

We tried a lot of different things.
1. Scaled down PA, less feedback.
2. Shorter songs... not as many solos... everyone didn't take a solo in every song.
3. Many more songs than normal... because the songs were shorter.
4. No bass effects... people didn't seem to mind.
5. Mostly rhythm guitar... the cornerstone of Funk Guitar that sometimes gets lost.
6. Shorter breaks.... 10 minutes.
7. Mikey B.... dancin' HELL YEAH... Rod tryin' HELL NO:-))
8. An extended third set... mostly "by the seat of our pants"... never rehearsed... we ran out of songs:-)

New Songs:
Shake Everything You Got;
You Can Have Watergate (Vocal Riddim);
Proud Mary;
Get Ready...

As always, thanks for the party!!

GOOD TIMES!

Exciting times hear in the Groove Jones camp. A few personnel changes… a lot less drama, HAPPY PEOPLE EVERYWHEREJ). First, we parted ways with Ian Ashanti. It seems his growing family made the demands of being in a band… uhhh, not very practical. We understood, and we wish he and his family success, health and happiness.

As many of you know, Jose Johnson (our trumpet player) has been recovering from cancer. The good news is, his surgery was a success. What's more, Jose made the step up from trumpet backup man to lead singer, instigator, trumpet-god. Honestly, I couldn't be happier. WE couldn't be happier. Jose was the leader, lead singer, and trumpet man for Life On Mercury (who I played with both as a bass player and guitar player). We had pretty good songwriting partnership going… and creating new funk is important to us, so the partership is a good thing. Last, but certainly not least… Jose's the coolest guy I know (Mike Burton, a very close second), and anything he invests his energy toward is better because of his contributions.

Recording, we're back in the studio…. more on this later.

Ralph Real… he talks of a funk mob that MUST be assembled. This area NEEDS it, the musicians NEED it!!! FUNKATEERS UNITE!! In this spirit, we're doing some very special gigs with an extended FUNK MOB... area local musicians who we love.  First is the very talented and beautiful Amaryllis Santiago (R&B/Jazz/Latin songstress),who will be the featured guest on more than a few gigs in the coming months. We're excited!!!. In addition, Michael Burton will be on hand for an unknown amount of gigs. Michael is probably the best funk guitar players/vocalist/instigators I've had the privilege of playing with. And he's anti-drama. AND RALPH REAL, I don't know…. but something cool HAS to happen with GJ and Ralph. He's the real deal…literally... check him out!

Exciting Times!!

Friday night, September 7th... what a night!!!

First the sound was great (out front and on stage)... we had Dane Paul Russell manning the system... it was the first time we all heard ourselves.... first time we didn't struggle with the sound. This is a serious issue in this band... anyone who knows us knows what we had to overcome to get the right sound.

And Dane's a MONSTER harp player.... not just blues harp (like most harp players)... greasy FUNKY harp.... full of badassness. If The Meters or the JB's had a harp player, he would sound like Dane Paul Russell!!

And then there was Ralph Real. He sat in with us during the whole third set. For me and the rest of GJ was like Christmas morning when you're 10 years old, excitement:-) You see, in our musical community, lot's of people think they're ALL THAT... people that tire me out with their self ego... rock star stuff (these people are usually lousy human beings, IMO). SO when I say what's to follow, I don't take it lightly. RALPH IS ALL THAT and more (and not full of himself). Vocally, keys, or freestyling, Ralph is doing what I wish I could do musically. We all can learn from Ralph--this thing for humility he has. If you want to be the stuff of greatness... don't be full of yourself, have that "inner-humility" (humility from the inside, not to be confused with the the outwardly pretentious/self deprecating sort). Check out what Ralph did to "Sugar Devil Swamp" and "Fly Like An Eagle."  He's the sh*t!!!!

Old friends came and saw the band for the first time. Elliot, Tony, Dan (& his brother), Simon (and girlfriend), Lauren, Liz, Amanda P (and family), Amanda B. ALL THE GREEN SHOES DOES IT band (who I also play with)... Scott, Darin, Amy, Rich (wives, girlfriends, husbands). Thanks so much for being there with us!!!

This is last 2007 visit for us at Tailgater's (theirs always 2008???). The band would like to thank Dave, Amy, and the entire Tailgater's staff for being so cool to work for. It's no wonder they do such a good business at Tailgater's.

Until next time,

Rod
