Originally recorded on an Ampex 300 ½" 4 track in 1969 (I was 16 years old). The mp3 was made from a mix that was done on an ATR 102 dated 1985.
Drums (Slingerland), bass (Vox Cougar), Wurlitzer (140B), acoustic guitar (Alvarez still have it) were recorded on the Ampex 300-4 (still have it) and reduced to one track of an Ampex 350 2 track (still have it) on Scotch 206. That track was transfered back to one track of the 300. Then, added vocal/pitch pipe, two electric guitar tracks (strat wish I still had it) tracks and the weird sounding harmony parts on the lines "he is a friend of mine" to fill up the 4 tracks. Those weird harmony parts were done by jamming the mic on my Adam's apple. I had a few different mixers back then, but I think this was mixed on an 8 channel Gately . I know what ever it was had pan pots and more than 4 inputs. These 4 tracks were mixed back to the Ampex 350 2 track. I had a Fisher Space Expander for reverb and an Echochord tape echo. My monitors were Electro Voice Sentry II (still have them). Vocal mic was a Norelco D-24 dynamic (still have it). The guitar distortion was achieved by going into a Hi Z -> Lo Z matching transformer into an Altec 1567A and driving the heck out of it.
I believe that working with limited tracks in those days made us better arrangers. Having to do reductions made us better mixers. Having limited equipment made us better engineers.
