SPECIAL MESSAGE -- HOW TO CELEBRATE BECTOBER! =)
Many of you may be asking, just how do you celebrate Bectober?
Of course, one of the most important parts of any holiday is the food you
choose to eat.
In Bectober, a person should look for foods containing the items Bacon,
Egg and Cheese (BEC) or just purchase the items separately if that's what
floats your boat.
Not much of a cook? NO PROBLEM. Just about any fast food restaurant can
provide you with some sort of meal for breakfast containing Bacon, Egg and
Cheese. One time I got a bagel with Bacon, Egg and Cheese at McDonald's
and the receipt actually said BEC on it. =)
Also, your grocer's frozen breakfast section will probably have lots of
items to choose from including Pillsbury Toaster Scrambles (words on the
pkg may not spell out BEC exactly, but one of their products contains the
correct ingredients), Red Baron makes at least one breakfast item
containing BEC and there are other brands of premade frozen breakfast
items with BEC too.
For our friends who eat kosher or vegetarian diets, there are plenty of
substitutions to meet your dietary needs out there including egg
substitutes and imitation bacon bits, etc. Basically, if you don't have
at least 1 meal that includes your Bacon, Egg and Cheese (or substitutes
as the case may be) you're just not celebrating Bectober.
Bectober is also inclusive of ALL of the traditional October holiday foods
including Oktoberfest items, Fall Harvest Festival items and Halloween
items. Yes you can have Halloween candy! =)
What is there to do, you may ask?
Again, the focus is on BEC so think entertainers, authors, etc., with BEC
in their names and also books and movies with BEC in the titles. You
might even want to look into what's been at the TRIBECA Film Festival in
recent years.
Some names and titles you probably won't want to miss:
1. "Rebecca" movie or book
2. "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" movie or book
3. Story in the Bible about Rebecca, her hubby Isaac and her twin sons
Jacob and Esau. If you don't have a Bible, try www.thebible.com.
4. Anything written by John Steinbeck -- in movie or book form -- "Grapes
of Wrath", "Cannery Row".
5. Anything written by Erma Bombeck (she has a movie too, but lots of
books and you can probably find some of her newspaper articles if you do a
microfiche search at your local library).
6. Anything by the musical artist "Beck" including some of his most
famous songs -- "Loser", the song about how he wants to break all the sex
laws (music video also stars actor extraordinaire Jack Black) and, from
one of his newest CDs the song "Baby You're a Lost Cause" ("Lost Cause"
may not actually be the title of the song because I couldn't find it on a
search of his CDs in the last year or so, but I've heard him sing those
words and saw him singing it on David Letterman's show.
7. Don't forget Bryan White's lovely tune "Rebecca Lynn" that was a 1
hit on the country music charts for quite some time until something by
Faith Hill snagged that spot.
Maybe you can think of lots of others to look for or maybe you just want
to google up the word BEC and see what comes up.
Want more ideas on foods to try?
I personally like:
1. Cottage cheese with canned peaches OR with canned fruit cocktail.
Why? It tastes great is probably a lot better for you than ice cream.
2. Lasagna.
Also:
3. I believe Erma Bombeck was fond of ice cream.
4. You could buy some grapes just to remember John Steinbeck's "Grapes of
Wrath".
Traditionally, the month of October is a time to remember loved ones,
family and friends that have passed on -- that's what All Hallows
Eve/Halloween and all the ghosts are about anyway -- so take some time to
remember your favorite BECs, maybe even send a card to old friends with
BEC in their names or maybe say a prayer for someone who might not have
come to mind just for Halloween.
