Chamber music by Ariel Consort

The Ariel Consort is a Portland-based chamber ensemble offering an enchanting blend of musical voices. Led by flautist/vocalist Jen Bernard, the Ariel Consort weaves its unique voices into an evocative tapestry of hauntingly beautiful music.

Story-telling by Rick Huddle

Rick has performed in nightclubs in Washington, DC, theaters in Portland, and beaches in Troncones, Mexico. Later this year, he'll perform his solo show, "(re)Made in Mexico", at the San Francisco Fringe Festival. He uses what the Oregonian calls his "rubbery face and expressive body language" to tell stories about self-conscious dandelions, his own life, and the lesser-known Boy Wonder, Robin #2.

Rick has balance?an ability to move back and forth between power and whimsy. His energy is unique and he has a presence that commands. -Walt Schaefer, Performer & Writer

A little Dirty Martini is better than none. That's been my motto since last April 30th anyway, when I first laid ears on this incredible band. So of course I had to head down to the Fez Ballroom for a little taste, even though I was basically a stuffy headed, nasal dripping walking germ. No one said being a stalker was easy.

It is, however, worth it. Stripped of their back-up-boy rhythm section (we love you Ned and Damien!), there was nothing but the bare essence (no sorry they weren't naked), as the women brought their A game to the stage.

Only time for two songs each, but I've seen audiences won over in less time. Lara opened up by setting the House on Fire and by the middle of Guilty my date-a Dirty Martini virgin-was hooked. McKinley admitted to feeling 'dangerous' on stage and it showed during When Doves Cry, which was maybe the best I've seen them perform that particular song. Back to Lara with Low a song McKinley swears is about being trapped in an underground shelter with a bunch of dry goods and a rifle. (Personally, I don't see it). It's a good bet this song will make an appearance on the next eagerly awaited Dirty Martini CD, coming later this year.

I hope none of the women in the audience were suffering from PMS during the haunting 'Two Tons'-or at least if they were, they had a lot of tissues handy. At the end of the set Stephanie shocked everyone who knows her by playing a happy song, appropriately titled Surprise. I knew she had it in her.

And that was all. Anyone who stayed for the next set was treated to Lara in a rare exposure of her double identity as a Stolen Sweet (check out their page on MySpace too). But as for DM, they left us wanting, as usual-but in a good way. Fortunately, Feb 11th and the Doug Fir Anti-Valentine's Day show are only 19 days away (and counting). The last show played here was bar-none the BEST I have ever seen them play-and I've seen a lot of shows. See you there. I'll be in the front row.
