Hello friends! It's been a busy fall season for most of us and so Catalyst wanted to wish you a Happy and Restful Holidays with your family, friends, and community! Share THANKS and Practice GIVINGAs Catalyst's founder, I wanted to extend my personal thanks to all of you. It's been fun sharing vision and hearts with you and your organizations over the past 3 years. We could not be where we are now as the Catalyst Community if it were not for each and every one of you owning a piece of the vision in your own way. Thank you to those who have come by our web site (haha, and its many versions these last 3 years) and/or have come by the new Catalyst Space to check us out and learn more about what we're trying to inspire our community to be.
Thank you to those who have made donations to invest in the Catalyst vision and to empower us to do what we do.
Thank you to the many many volunteers who have pitched in to help get the word out about us, to help renovate the Space, to help with behind the scenes logistics and operations, and to help keep the Space open by taking on a shift. Thank you to the groups, businesses, and organizations that have extended their friendship and have partnered with us in collaboration. Thank you too for doing what you do for the benefit of our communities!
Thank you to the catalysts of each of our established communities who work tirelessly to advance the vision in their respective communities: Tanya (LBCreative!), Elliot (Green Long Beach!), Lacey (LB Girls), and Graham (Pedal Movement). Thank you to all of the Action Team facilitators of each of our established communities who champion the causes, projects and initiatives that they are passionate about. And thanks to the members of all the Action Teams - this is your community so thanks for being active in it! Thank you to Ty who always inspires us to stretch and to rest - that balance of growth that is so necessary. Thank you to Ryan, our steady level-headed friend and also tireless Operations Director who has worked by my side in all of this. Thank you to our Board of Directors who empower our organization to be member-driven.
With much thanks and appreciation, I also ask for your continued support and contribution in advancing the vision - to inspire a greater sense of community, collaboration, and citizenship through meaningful relationships. Our goal is 20K by 2010! That is, to raise $20,000 by January 1, 2010 to financially sustain us through the end of March (the end of our fiscal year.) This will empower us to continue reaching out and reaching in to inspire our community to "Connect and Affect". Can you help by becoming a regular giver? If you gave last month or if you missed your chance, we now have the ability to accept monthly recurring contributions via PayPal. Could you please make a tax-deductible donation now? Thank you! Donate HereWe also have a new Sponsorship Program for businesses and organizations that would like to invest in Catalyst, our vision, and the community. We have various types of acknowledgments where we would like to thank you for your tax-deductible contribution. Thank you! CONNECT and AFFECT in 2010
We have been investing time in strategic planning for next year. It's going to be an exciting one. We're planning monthly art shows, monthly connection events, and monthly classes and workshops - in addition to the many things happening within each of the communities in the network. If you would like to help shape our planning, please come by every Monday night for our THINK-TANKS at 7pm at the Catalyst Space.
Take care and Happy Holidays!

I always want to say Summer ART Music Series, I dunno why!
Speaking of DuhNo, NO DUH will be returning to Long Beach.
Last time I saw them, the two local WEEKLIES almost got into a scuffle because of an ad I placed in one of them. (It was a really "weak" ad but it ruffled some feathers!)
SPATS aside, let's get back to No Duh - they were GREAT and unaware of the ruffle. And their music brought downtown Long Beach together!
Here is the info I just read off their post:
No Duh, tribute to the one & only No Doubt!
07/25/2009 2:00 PM-6 PM - Rainbow Harbor "Battle of the Tributes" ALL AGES FREE No DUH 3:50PM-be there to support No Duh & No Doubt! 300 Pine Ave (Pine Ave at Shoreline Dr.) Long Beach, California 90831
Cost:FREE Description:....Great day of music! 3:55PM NO DUH (No Doubt) ALSO:

As part of the downtown Long Beach summer concert series known as SAM (..www.........summerandmusic.....com), we are putting together a special event. On Saturday, July 25, 2009, we will feature a Battle of the Bands - exclusively showcasing tribute bands. We are inviting select tribute bands to go head to head during a dynamic daytime performance at Rainbow Harbor in downtown Long Beach. This venue is the premier location for the series, featuring a beautiful amphitheater located right on the water with views of Shoreline Village, Rainbow Harbor and the Queen Mary. The event will kick-off at 1pm and end at 7pm. This concert series is entirely free and all ages are welcome, including this special event. It’s a great opportunity for you to invite friends and family that may not be able to see No Duh & other great bands perform at the usual venues.

Which meeting will you attend? I'd love to get the scoop!
LBCreative.org (see website, also twitter.com/LBCreative 6:30pm) and LISTEN to this meeting invite down the street from that meeting beginning at 7pm: Pretty cool, huh? I like the way LA MUSE is pronounced!
PS Sorry for the last minute notice. I was thinking the local ART orgs were coming together meaning we'd ALL be on the same page!
AS OF THIS MORNING:
EPKvision.com no mention on site or twitter.com/EPKvision LBCreative.org Just tweeted about LBreative 7/8 GoCatalyst.org no mention Twitter.com/GoCatalyst - tweeted yesterday TheCreativityNetwork.org still under construction, ref to LimeLightLB LimeLightLB.com has it listed on 3rd page of events, then #11 this site is linnked to: EverythingLongBeach.com contains LimeLightLB event listings Twitter.com/TsSpace no mention ONE DAY WE WILL ALL BE ON THE SAME PAGE. My suggestion is that the Convention and Visitors Bureau PAY someone to post events not only on LOCAL LONG BEACH WEBSITES btu event sites from LA, San Diego, SoCaL, etc. ARTSLB.org Has an Artist Listing but the links seem to die at smolarcorp.

Learn more about the East Village ArtExchange
Please join Councilmember Suja Lowenthal, the ArtExchange Board of Directors and the Redevelopment Agency at a community meeting to learn more about this exciting new project in the East Village. The ArtExchange is a collaborative art facility proposed for the southeast corner of 3rd Street and Long Beach Boulevard. It is intended to provide a permanent and affordable workplace for the development and production of art by local artists. The Exchange would operate on a profit-centered business model where artists sell directly to the public and are connected to networking opportunities that would help promote an art community for the City. The meeting is on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Museum of Latin American Art, 628 Alamitos Avenue.

Listen to Sander's Podcast on podomatic.com and LBpost.com and leave a comment. I did and here it is:
Questions:
Do operating expenses include rent & salaries? (ie. LBCTelevision learned PEG funds cannot be used for those costs). Define overhead costs.
Does Craig Watson have the TECHNICAL knowledge (specifically internet) in addition to art & cable access fields?
It is Robert Swayze's job to change the law re: live music in non-traditional venues? What's the next step?
Comments:
Sander, I'd love to see a roving LBC stage at Art Receptions AND on street corners. P. West says "Grow Art" . Interesting visual ;) SPIN Cycle Exhibit was cool! Good point Sander, the Arts Council can spend more time & energy attracting Grants and alternative funding.
The City now DOES have a marketing network online, the latest being Twitter and Ning. This will feed the bloggers but QUALITY must be present for praise. TIP OF THE DAY
NowGetSocial.com is a website BILconference used for PARTICIPANTS to decide on presentations. LB can use this interactive tool to decide public art pieces and placement, to assist with the Master Cultural Plan.

If hoarding cash, cutting back and working harder aren't paying off enough in tough economic times, here's one more way to conserve resources. Creative reuse — that's the technique new business owner Lisa Hernandez is capitalizing on in downtown Long Beach. Her new shop, called the Long Beach Depot for Creative Reuse, repurposes all sorts of odds and ends and recently became part of the Long Beach 2nd Saturday Art Walk. "I wanted to do something with my life that's different and that helps the community," she said. "I wanted to bring in the artists, the community, schools and businesses."
Items for resale include rubber stamps, broken eyeglasses, keys and jewelry scraps. Customers can both donate and purchase items or make selections from a "free exchange" area in the shop. Teachers, students, seniors, artists and environmentalists, Hernandez said, most often frequent the store. "It's all those things that didn't quite make it to Goodwill but that are too good to make it to the trash," she explained. "Its like a throwback from the old five and dime stores."
Hernandez established her store while between jobs after seeing a few similar warehouses marketing the same idea. Her career experience includes work in human resources, legal assistance and the military. She said she eventually would like her store to attain status as a nonprofit organization and to attract national attention. "My vision is to inspire people and to get others to open their own stores," Hernandez said.
"It fits into what's going on with the economy. If we had these in all of the communities, it would empower individuals who don't have jobs to have their own small business." There's a green side to her store, too. "If we reduce by reusing what we have, that makes more sense than recycling," Hernandez said. Inspiration came from her father, who she said took her to flea markets and taught her to improvise when resources were slim.
"My dad was a scrounger," Hernandez said. "He had a warehouse full of stuff when we were growing up, and he told us to use things we already have instead of spending money." While she's kept her business afloat largely by living off of donations from the community, she said her endeavor has proven challenging.
"Rent is the biggest cost," said Hernandez, who moved to Long Beach four years ago. "Bills are high because I've had to borrow. But I have faith it is going to work. It all comes back. I look at it as more of a service." Her 15-year-old daughter, Yoshino Jasso, serves as the resident artist at the shop. She has created commodities such as earrings from cork and pen tops. "It's amazing — she goes a step further," Hernandez said. "She has some very popular items."
The Long Beach Depot for Creative ReUse is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, at 320 Elm Ave., in the East Village Arts District.
Free creative reuse and hand sewing classes are available for youth ages 8 and older on Saturdays. For more information about the Depot for Creative Reuse, call 437-9999 or visit www.thelongbeachdepot.org.
